The last year that Lars played/practiced as if EVERY show was his last show, was back in 1997. Since 1997, he pretty much stopped practicing and at shows, if you really listen, he uses a ton of drum fills instead of playing the actual part. Using drum fills is just so much easier than to play the real stuff. Kinda disappointing. There are a couple of videos on KZfaq where you see, James actually getting frustrated with Lars playing. James lost the power in his voice, i would say around, 1997 maybe 1998. Metallica clicked at their all time prime in sound and power from 1986 to 1994. After 1994. It was hit or miss sometimes until 1998. Then after 1998, just starting slowly going down

@Defector I thought I heard him say in an interview that he doesn't practice anymore because of the tinnitus(constant ringing in his ears) from all the years of playing without any ear protection in/on. The doctors told him to cut back on drumming as much as possible.

James said that when he first came up with the song his vocals were much higher. He feared that it wouldn’t work live because it was too demanding on his vocal cords so he lowered the tone and created a master piece

Metallica Bagan going down hill after 1998. Lars ego exploded after the black album and stopped practicing and started using A LOT of drum fills in the songs because it's easier than to play the real parts. Lars went down hill after, 1996. The power in the voice of James was at it's peal power from, 1986 to 1997. That said, Metallica lost its nest sound and power after 1998. Since 2005, only about 30% of their songs since then, gives us some pieces of that best Era Metallica sound and power.

Unfortunately the money and game went to the head of Lars and his ego exploded during and after the Black Album. After the Black Album, Lars started to use A LOT of drum fills in the songs (because it's a lot easier and for people who don't know music and doesn't have an ear for drums can't tell that he does this now) AND Lars stopped practicing all together.

I also remind myself that Metallica dudes are now 60 or close to it and the fact that at that age, they still play the crazy heavy and fast songs from the 80s is so insane and does deserve some major props and some understanding on my part that it's just fact that nobody/ no band can/will sound the exact same forever lol.

I am from Eugene Or, i’ve been saying for years that we NW rockers/metalheads thrash & celebrate our hero’s better than any other part of the country, we don’t stand there with our arms crossed daring the band to impress me like say the LA scene, all metal bands enjoy the NW part of tour cause they know the fans will be getting off.

You have a lot to catch up on. This is an amazing video where you can see Cliff Burton. If you don't know about his death, let me enlighten you. There was a crash (no details needed). The Metallica tour bus crashed and Cliff Burton was thrown from the bus and pinned under it. What most people do not know was that he was still alive when they attempted to life the bus and failed, causing the bus to land flat on Cliff again. This is what killed him. He is the guitarist here and is responsible for all the early Metallica song you know and love.
