Enjoyed that. Well done. Very satisfying to DIY investigate and solve problems like this. Contrary to popular belief, it is not Rocket Science. Even that VVC Mechanism and its sensors on the higher spec VVC cars. We have two VVC cars in the extended family fleet and one MGTF 135. A very nice car that one. What is annoying for this MG and Rover enthusiast, the poor car invariably gets the blame when things are wrong when more often than not, as you have found A H, heavy handed folks working on and often abusing the cars are really the ones to blame. Fancy breaking the Key Ways on the electrical connections no doubt with a Big 'ammer Clarkson style to make them fit. We have other K-Series cars in the family including my own daily driver load carrying workhorse, an MG ZT-T with the 1.8 K-Series Turbocharged Petrol Engine. The whole family drives Rovers and MGs and my wife's MG ZS bought new in 2003 is in regular daily driver service now over 110,000 miles fast approaching its nineteenth birthday. Well done. Good to keep these nice old MGs running strong. All ours do. We like 'em.

Thanks for sharing. It is good to know that blundered repairs are not confined to German mechanics. And good to know that they can be fixed by avid owners. BTW: Does anybody know if a ZR 160 engine would fit into a MGF? Has anybody ever done such a transplant?

Thank you for your comment. I have often wondered why the mechanic blundered. perhaps he was trying to re-assemble using the MGF workshop manual. I understand that its Engine Management System used the same plugs as the MGTF but different colours. So when they didn't fit, maybe it was thought to be time for persuasion.

That would be the VVC 160 engine. Some MGFs left Longbridge with VVC K-Series engines. MG TFs had the 160 VVC. No doubt it is possible. Plenty of info on Facebook groups from folks been there done that. My son fitted a VVC 1.8 into a Rover Metro. One I bought new in the family back in 1993 and passed it onto him when he was old enough to drive. I thought it would be an engine transplant and all the engine sub-loom stuff changes beyond his capabilities but, I was wrong. The Metro is the proverbial Pocket Rocket. I have fitted a Chinese MG6 1.8T to an MG ZT-T 1.8T. The car had engine issues in previous ownership and he offered it to me to see if I could breath new life into the car. Seven years on, a reliable daily driver. The Chinese version of the K-Series has a range of improvements when you have the English and Chinese engines side by side for comparison. The best improvement according to a Longbridge MG Motor insider being unseen. It is the casting process used by the Chinese for all the main Alloy Engine components resulting in denser, harder and stronger alloy material. Handling both engines I got that impression before I knew there were different casting processes involved. That's why some owners of other K-Series cars like those with Lotus Elises fit the stronger engine blocks and heads as they tune them to produce around and n excess of 200 bhp reliably. We have an Elise in the family. Same powertrain as the MGFs and TFs. The oldest K-Series car still in the family we've had for twenty nine years. Nowt much wrong with these clever designed engines provided they are serviced and maintained properly.

Great video George. I’m having real trouble with the same code. I have a 2004 model 160 so would think the configuration is the same. My connections are currently black connection into the oil temp sensor, then brown then blue to the right. In your video, before you show the correct revs, you display the plugs as being black, blue and brown, but then changes to black, brown and blue in the edits after the nice idle. Which way round gave your success? Can Anyone suggest a rover/mg specialist with T4 diagnostic kit in Kent or Sussex or Surrey. I’m in SE London. Cheers in advance for any help you can give.

my water temp clock isn't working as yours shows,hope your quick fix does the job,will find out tomorrow,will let you know,mine is the 2003 mgtf 135,i think yours is the 160,the plugs you show are different to mine,mine comes off a single outlet with two senses on it,

Hi I've got a 218 vvc coupe and the plugs on that are brown to oil temperature sensor black to inner solenoid and blue to outer solenoid.!!
