If this video saves you a pound or two then please make a donation to The Felix Fund, the charity of The Royal Engineers.
Another MGF job that has a reputation for being difficult but I will take you through the process step by step. Once again, just a few basic tools required, please search for Debdencycle to see other vehicle DIY guides along with cycle ride guides.

I've done 2 thermostats with everything in place ofc with a ramp in a workshop. But there's no point taking all that off. Also you can get the housing and thermostat for £20 at euro car parts

Should the jiggle valve on the thermostat be at the top to allow any air to bleed out?

Does your car have a PRT as was only a clear valve you took out ? Can you run the PRT and the 82 with the jiggle valve ? Great vid btw 👍

Just changing the thermostat housing on my MGF Trophy 160 as it was leaking. I don’t know how people replace the thermostat without removing the inlet manifold. Getting to the thermostat was straightforward but putting things back together is a nightmare, especially the 2 bolts on the steel coolant pipe bracket on the back of the engine… 😢

Going a bit beyond this, why not the PRT mod ? Some have it at the front or rear of the stainless pipes. I've just changed mine and also doing HGF so as result thinking to reduce future shock, but improve access - surely better to leave the straight through flow that you had and more the PRT into the system elsewhere where it may be easier to change if it fails ?

Hey, I recently became an owner of an MGF, thank You for filming your repairs. How well does the Hood (soft top) deal without colder parts of the year? Did you consider a hardtop? I see that you fitted the 57i K&N induction kit on your car. Could you share how you figured out the cold air intake? I see that you do not have the standard air box. The MGF I bought came with MGTF airbox without the resonator and hence I was wondering how to get around the cold air intake issue. So for I have been purchasing parts from Rimmer Bros., if you can recommend any other shop, maybe with upragdes not only stock parts it would be great. Thank You in advance, best regards

Wow. It is an amazing video and job. I did the process 3 or 4 times in my TF and I would have liked to have seen the video before. First 2 times I did as you showed (in my case it is a TF 160 so it has an oil heat exanger also in tha part of the engine). The last two I did it without removing the inlet manifold. Much faster and easier if you know where are the bolts. I will take a look to the rest of your chanel!

Hello, this video is great :) I love your "you can do it" encouragement! I'd like to do this on my MGF, what is the part number for the Borg and Beck thermostat you used? Also how has it been since doing this? Thanks!

can you help...Do you have a video of replacing a front offside wishbone on 1998 MGF

Des, now that is a job that I have done a few times! It's a subframe drop job but it can be done on your drive on your own. Here's a step by step from memory. Jack the front of the car up as high as you safely can and put it on axle stands. Place a substantial piece of timber across the under side of the subframe with your jack to support the subframe. Release the steering racak from the subframe, a few bolts between the subframe and bulk head. Undo the rather surprisingly small suubframe mounting bolts at the front. Undo the more substantial subframe mounts bolted into the car's floor. The subframe should now be free to be lowered on your jack (if I haven't forgotten anything!). You have to do all of the above because the rear wishbone attaching bolt won't come out unless the subframe is lowered (great design!). You'll find that due to the weight of the subframe it wants to swing back towards the car so once you've undone said wishbone bolt you'll need to push the subframe balancing on your jack forwards to slide the bolt out. I know this sounds rather precarious but it's not really. The front wishbone attaching bolt head is accessed through a cut out in the subframe which has more than likely still got sticky tape over it. Replace components as required and assemble in reverse order but before you do that remember two things. 1. Grease everything, it's probably been years since this was all apart. 2. Get your grease gun on those suspension grease nipples by the inner wings. Watch the black, ancient grease get forced out because you're the first person to do that job since it left the factory! Final point of note. You might find that your steering wheel isn't straight once you've put it all back together. Don't panic you haven't messed up your tracking. This will be a result of you not secure your steering rack in exacly the same place. If you've bolted it a bit to the left (looking forwards) then the wheels will be turned slightly to the right causing you to counter that by turning the sterring wheel. Top tip then. Put it together, take it for a drive, check the steering wheel alignment and loosen, slightly adjust the steering rack until you're satisfied. I'll video it next time.

Des, no I don't but I have done it. You need to drop the front subframe down,,, or at least down. Jack the front up as far as it will go and put axle stands under the body (not the subframe). Loosen the steering rack off from the subframe. Support the subframe with a trolley jack. Release the subframe from the body, big bolts at the back, smaller at the front. Drop the subframe down an inch or two to be able to remove the rear wishbone bolt. That's about it! Fun times, British design at it's best!
