Today I'm sharing the 3 incredibly effective techniques that I use in my own home to control the influx of 'stuff, or my' 'Stop The Shop Triad'. Despite the name, this isn't about a total rejection of shopping- it's about curbing and controlling the intentions behind shopping. Think of it as tightening the faucet so that you can intentionally control the flow of things that are coming into your home.

I discovered the "not right now" method for myself as a teenager. Back then I really was into cute decorations from the dollar store. When I was at the mall with my friends (and we all liked that stuff so no holding back from their side), we HAD to go there. I always found something I like but I said to myself "If I really want this, I buy it when we want to leave the mall." In most cases I totally forgot about it or I didn't want it that much to go all the way back for it. That helped me very much. Also I didn't want to dust so much any more. :-)

I loove the "not right now" idea. I've been sort of doing something like that while trying to break my addiction to desserts, and I like the idea of being more intentional with it going forward

I use "not right now" for when my stomach growls but I'm in the middle of a project and don't want to stop; it keeps my weight in check!

Oh man, this is exactly the reason I have to KEEP decluttering!! After 15 years, I am finally figuring out the emotional reasons I shop and how to stop buying emotionally.

For me I've found that I had to figure out what was motivating my need to shop (what void I was trying to fill), then find other, more healthy ways to fill those needs. One example is I found I was board, and lacking human connection so I started a knitting group at my local library. This helped fill the void and because I was at the library, not at the store I wasn't tempted to shop while knitting. I've also gotten into the habit of keeping receipts with the item so that I could give myself some time and if in the next few days if I regretted my purchase I could return the item (unused and in it's original packaging of course). Lastly I now do what I call shopping at home. I don't just assume I don't have what I need. I look around and see if I can't find something that will work (that I already have) before hitting the store. Sounds simple but more often than not I've found if I look around I could find the opportunity to use something I already had on hand, and bonus not spend money to buy something new!

I've used "not right now" for years when it comes to just about anything over $10 lol. If I still want to a few days or weeks later (depending on the item) then I go ahead and buy it. This also gives me the operrunity to set money aside for it so it doesn't turn into an impulse purchase.

The one thing that I can’t say “not right now” to is clothes that I need. Seems that stores are carrying fewer pieces of a style, and do not have more inventory come in. At least Target. So if I find something I was hoping to find, I get it. I know I will wear it, and it is likely there will not be another in that size days later.

Thank you for this video Mia!! I think that the 'not right now' is what is going to help me the most, I love that! I've recently just started jogging and I use that method everytime...just make it to that, and then to the next landmark...it really works. Never thought of using it to curb my shopping lol. Great idea!

Long ago I called time on family xmas gifts. Some were spending money they didn't have on tat the recipient didn't need or want. It took a couple of years before we cut it out altogether, but what a relief. I also had to put my foot down on their constant attempts to declutter their stuff by giving it to me. Nowadays I gift experiences, such as dinner or an event, and if I do buy a physical gift I make sure it's something the person needs or will get used up, like wine or a candle.

Great video 👍 The "shrinking down time" or "not right now" strategy worked perfectly for me when giving birth without an epidural à few months ago... It was one contraction at a time, I delayed the "giving up"moment until I finally did it! 💪 Thanks to your video, when I will go shopping I will think "do I need it? No, but..." like always, but this time, I will think about the contractions and how proud I am, and all the strength I am capable of having, and I will tell myself "not right now" until I forget about it or am over it. (the wishlist is a great ti by the way) Same for sweet treats, the not right now strategy! Shopping and sugar are real addictions I swear!😜

Love the “not right now”. I don’t usually have the money to get all the things I see anyway, so I put them on a wish list, put it in my cart then hit Save for Later, pin them on Pinterest, or take a picture of it. Most of the time I forget about it, but if I don’t and I’m still thinking about it weeks later (it’s something we actually need, I’ve searched the best price possible for it and it’s in the budget) then I’ll get it! Love the random bits of psychology in your videos :)

I thought this was about picking up the odd bit of wood, a broken branch and thinking you can make something interest with it. I saw a neighbour knocking down a brick wall. I asked him if I could knock some bricks off and take then for the wall I was building. After I dug the hole, laid the base and built the wall I got a 9 metre by 46 cm moat in the front garden. Or when friends, particularly those much senior to yourself, declutter by handing it to you to sort out - fix, give away or sell.

I add things to an Amazon shopping basket. I find I keep changing what's in it. Which tells me I don't need this stuff. I gave up smoking too and tried the patches and tobacco mint things. First I dropped the mints and then my skin started reacting to the patches. So in the end like you I did it using willpower. But shopping addiction is harder.

Ooh, that's a great trick! Sometimes we just HAVE TO HAVE IT in that moment... but if the time passes, we can change our minds. That's a great way to filter through what you really want/need and a fleeting moment of joy. Keep up the great work, relying on willpower isn't easy but you're proof of what can happen if you try and don't give up 🥰

I'm still binge watching your videos to catch up. I was really surprised to hear you were a former smoker. Guess it surprised me because you're into Holistic living. Glad to hear you quit. I was also a former smoker for many years. I quit 14 years ago, used Chantix, back when it was the popular thing to use. At least it worked for me and thankful to free of a nasty habit.

Thank you for all the tips. I don't think I could have started decluttering this time without your videos for help. I have done it so many times in my life and it just keeps coming back and now I am learning why. It rules my life and sometimes my relationships and I am so tired of it! Also what is balancing a checkbook? I have heard that before but no idea what it means, I'm 27 and I guess this was obsolete for my generation by the time I reached adulthood?
