On March 10, 2020, Michigan State Police Trooper Dylan Neill stopped 69-year-old John Haynes in Saginaw for a seatbelt violation. Haynes was accused of resisting and obstructing a police officer. A judge later dismissed the charge. Haynes filed a federal lawsuit against Neill and other officers at the scene. State police settled the claim for $160,000. (Video provided by Michael Jones)

It’s how us at the MSP do it. When a suspect is arrested, and put in the passenger seat, it’s proven to make them act better.

All he had to do was show I.D and vehicle information and he would've been on his way in 5 -10 minutes. However in typically fashion he fought and resisted arrest which then warrants a arrest to be made. Do better and just comply that simple.

We were stopped a month ago in a little shyt town . Middle aged white couple here . vehicle off , window down . Cop walks up I ask whats going on . He states he didnt see our seatbelts on . he looks in and sees they are on . Says ok have a nice day . What I wonder about is why he didnt use the brake light thats out on the left side taillight to pull us over . He pulled up right behind us .

I would rather it be unedited. Also had to read the description to see he was awarded $160,000, I’m sure most who see this don’t read that part. Moral of the story, if you get pulled over and believe you were illegally profiled, you can stay calm, hand over your license, and be on your way shortly after, or you can say no, resist arrest, get manhandled, maybe worse, spend the night in jail but maybe get $160k.. hmm that’s a tough decision. I’d just play it the safe route, the manhandling could have gone much worse.

Those people resisted and never made it home.. just do what they say, and be ok.. because chances are it’s not gonna go well, not everyone gets paid, sometimes you’re family gets paid after you’re gone, but what good does that do you? People need to understand that citizens have the right to resist unlawful arrests, there's absolutely no need for an arrest for an alleged seatbelt violation. It's a civil infraction and the way that officer handled the situation was completely absurd and excessive, he escalated the situation, period.

You see an officer immediately break the law and all the blame is placed on the other individual. I wouldn't trust the word of a cop about a seat belt when he immediately violated someone's rights.
