It's frustrating that trying to keep in shape is causing me more problems. It now seems that all my calf stretching on the edge of the stairs and high-intensity high knees exercises (i.e. running on the balls of my feet) may have been what caused my metatarsalgia. I am not overweight and am (or was) in very good shape.

Out of sheer frustration I made my own metatarsal pad with cotton cosmetic pads . I stacked about three on top of each other and taped them with blue painters tape on to my orthotics. I had to try it a few times to make sure I had it in the right spot...bingo felt so much better. I have Hoka's they are amazing. I'm 75 and used to walking at least 5-6 miles four-five days a week. I'm giving my metatarsalgia a month to get better 🤩 meanwhile I'm cycling and doing aqua aerobics.
@kylergeston

How are you now? Did using the cotton pads repair the problem? I just started having a metatarsalgia issue with my left foot so I am looking for a way to correct it as fast as I can. I used to be a runner back in the day but in the last 6 years since I had a work accident causing me to have constant lower back pain I have not been able to. I now know that everything will go to pot if one does not stretch and get some form of exercise as one gets older. Movement and staying active is the key to which I have not been so it is understandable why things are breaking down for me. I hear that hot yoga does wonders in the winter.... or moving to a warmer climate. Looking at the doing the latter but have to much anxiety to take that leap of faith. It's tough to move to a new location and start all over again with no friends or family.... I digress.

I get my first time x-ray tomorrow for feet, legs,& lower back pain, all stemming from a mild right knee tear, one year ago, feeling, as the months passed that everything was good. Then, I started noticing the bunched up feeling under my right foot, with other things starting to hurt, especially my lower back, hips, & toes. It slowly got worse, to the point, just a month or so ago, that if I did not use Tylenol for Arthritis, I could barely walk through a store, unless I was pushing a cart. I have always been able to do anything physical , with the usual slight muscle pain. This is so new to me, that real anxiety over what was wrong has been jarring my mind lately. Then I started looking at ball of foot bunching things, online, really doing the most just this afternoon. Your video was expertly done, with easy understanding of what I likely have, done in a calming voice, unlike so many other videos. Again, thank you, and God bless you. I AM a 74 year young woman, not I bad shape, which is emphasized in your video, so it was inevitable that sooner or later, SOMETHING was destined to start falling apart! 🙏🏻 John 3:16 -17

Thank you so much for this video! I have metatarsal pain for several years. I saw a foot doctor before. He told me to add a pad on my insole and stretch my calf, but he didn’t explain it. I also had plantar fasciitis at the time and I thought the stretching was just for PF. Now knowing the mechanics behind it I will focus on stretching and massaging more!

My ball of foot problem came after dropped foot due to back surgery a few years ago. Since I have lost 30 lbs. walk a lot and have stationary bike. After a few miles walking my foot will “flap” more and most pain is in the ball of my foot. Also if I walk bare foot on wood floors at home , from middle of the ball of my foot I get a click, sounds like a knuckle crack. When my foot is rested I can walk normally. After rigorous workout (for me) the foot does work well for about 30 minutes and gets back to normal. Not having much luck with a diagnosis from MD’s. This was video was very good and had more reasonable eplainations than I have had.

My left foot has inflammation, under the 2nd and third toes, which lead me to your video. I pulled out some foot braces (stretchy bands with cushion for the arch), padded up with gel heel supports (came in the same foot care kit) and walked around the house. I never realized how much I was walking on the balls of my feet. Ouch! Time to look into getting better insoles and do more stretching! [Edit: thank you so much!]

Good stuff! Interestingly, in my case bike riding actually CAUSED my metarsalgia (MTB + Cleats + Rough Terrain). Changing cleat position and using a orthotic & metatarsal pad, along with lots of stretching is my current regimen, but not much relief yet. Considering trying Voltaren gel on the sole of foot next.

I have this right now. i cut a yoga matt to the width of of my foot arch. At the bottom i cut a curve to sit round my heel at the top i cut an arch to sit just behind the ball of my foot. yesterday i could barely walk from the pain and had to walk keeping one foot flat today i put the foam in a thin set of socks and wore a pair of boots. the boot on the painful foot was very undone on the laces and only tied up at the top i did a hour patrol at 8pm and was walking normally, the bump is not super pleasant but the lack of pain is amazing

@@kylergeston no, because I just realized that my foot issue is due to tight calf muscles, and fascia all the way up to my hip/lower back. The products helped, but only stretching and strengthening is going to improve the issue. Positive is that the issue never got worse and my bunion isn't worse.

Thank you for this video! I do Irish Dancing, and right now I obviously can't with Metatarsalgia. And I suspect getting back to dancing too hard too fast after a months long hiatus is what caused it. But I want to get back into it so badly! When and how can I get back to "repetitively putting thousands of [jumps] on the foot"? It is vital to me that I can get back to that. I really enjoyed and valued this episode on Metatarsalgia Exercises, Massage and Stretches! I have been hungry for this knowledge for years now. I have not had insurance or budget to see a foot doctor and years have gone bye bye 👋. The doctors I could afford offered solutions that were ineffective. I get so tired of being poor and looked at like you have 15 minutes and then we have our next patient. Not your problem I know. The whole system fell apart and this is where “we (me) (I) am”. So thank you for a detailed but easily understood action oriented video. I found I didn’t get bored and learned so much that made a lot of sense because it connected other symptoms that go together like the tightness of the body, stretching, inserts, proper shoes, getting pressure off the area which has been hard to figure out, and the exercises make sense. I can do so much of these things. The cross country fitness makes sense too. I have a girlfriend who insists on walking. I’m in pain after several hours. I do have a question 🙋‍♀️ how do you stabilize your ankles? I have always been clumsy with my ankles. They will roll, or I am wearing a shoe that has too much cushion in the front and bend it backwards and trip on my hands and knees. It really hurts. I will fall down stairs sometimes and hurt my ankle because I didn’t catch good footing. It makes me feel like something is wrong with me. Like I can’t guage things clearly. It’s been this way as I was young too. For example not lifting a foot high enough over a pet gate and falling down on concrete. Any ideas 💡 Thank you so much! 😊

I probably have this. I got pain last night that went from a dull ache about a 1/10 on the pain scale and within an hour became extreme and is now a 8/10 with any weight or pressure. Putting on socks is very painful. It’s like tender with a stinging, sharp, stabbing pain. Like someone jabbed a needed straight through the bottom of my foot around that crease. It’s either the 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd metatarsal. It’s been a day now and I wore a walking boot for part of the day (did nothing) tried a metatarsal pad and the pain got WORSE. I cannot walk bc the pain is so excruciating and I have a bunch of stuff coming up. I need to be able to walk, at least partially. All I did yesterday was my normal workout and a 20 minute walk on my road. I don’t know what to do, but I can hardly touch it and I don’t want this to be a chronic thing that never goes away but I feel like it is going to end up like that. So many people seem to never improve based off the comments of all these ball of foot pain videos. It seems surgery only improves it for some people and same with injections. I had plantar fasciitis last year at this exact same time, that time the pain was in my heel and was that same tender sharp stinging that even hurt to put socks on. It took me at least 3 months to be able to walk on both feet. Why so I feel like there is nothing that can be done? I hope everyone in the comments feels better, bc I would rather amputate my foot then deal with this pain at this level chronically

Can you recommend a good flip flop? I live on a sailboat and have increasing pain on the ball of my foot. I think it is Morton's neuroma or something with my toe. My 3rd toe is separating from my second toe. I bought something to try and align them and I am trying the stretching you recommend. It feels like I have a pebble in the ball of my foot when walking. My feet are constantly wet so I can't just tape a metatarsal pad into my flip flops. I do have them in my tennis shoes. I recently started wearing Oofos flip flops and they seem to have made it worse. These are supposed to be orthotic flip flops. Thank you.

I start having pain at my ball of foot 2 weeks ago, saw your video and bought the gel Metatasalgia from amazon and it helps a little. I went to see my podiatrist and she saw that gel on my ball of foot when I tell her about having this new pain there. All she offered was giving me an injection! Now, when I am having this pain at the ball of my foot pad, and when I roll a lacrosse ball over there, it hurts, should I stop rolling the ball of foot pad area and just roll the ball on other area of my foot? Should I do those exercise when the pain is down? Thanks!

thank you for this great video! i have a podiatrist appointment this coming Tuesday this week and I had an Xray report coming back to me a few days ago. it appears to be a mild degenerative osteo arthritis.my second toe moved on the left right next to the big toe, leaving a massive gap between the second and third toe. the ball of my foot and the second toe are very tender, and I can't wait to have this checked to understand how NOT to make it worse. i have been active all my life with lots of bike riding, swimming and walking to the other side of morning along with some high impact cardio, but I never liked running and never will. I keep riding my bike, swimming and low impact cardio, as these are by far my best options at the moment. weights? I am not sure but I like carrying 2.5 kilos while squatting

Would metatarsal pads or metatarsal padded orthotics be useful or a hindrance for running, especially as a forefoot/midfoot runner? Or would the padded ones be more used as a walking/recovery shoe? I'm wondering if that hump would feel awkward or even cause blisters during a run. Thanks, Doc!

As much as we would love to for something as complex as post-op care it is 100% critical to discuss these things with your doctor. Foot procedures can take a while to heal and it is very common and expected for people to think that it is taking too long to heal. Stiffness and soreness can be present for up to a year for sure. Work with your doctor!

I have sciatica down my left leg . diagnosed with some nerve damage . you mentioned tightness of the Achilles tendon . the tightness causes my toes to curl. probably the cause of the pain in the ball of the foot . I currently have the Hoka Bondi X. it seems to lost its cushion . I ordered the Hoka Bondi 7. hopefully the cushion will remain cushioned . the plate in the Bondi X shortened the life of the cushion . I told the VA doctor about my foot problem and was ignored . the ankle is stiff and weak . easily injured if I am not careful . my knee is weak as well . I can't exert much . regular walking no problem . I increase the speed of walk . I feel it in the knee and ankle . I have to slow down . I may have to badger the VA doctor to do tests on my Achilles tendon . I have a hunch that I need surgery to fix it. so no more pain in the ball of the foot , no more ankle weakness, stiffness and pain . I have done stretches and the toes straighten out. also the ball of the foot pain goes away temporarily . the ankle stiffness remains . very tight calves as well . what should I tell the VA doctor to get him to listen to me . To order MRI , xray, whatever test I need ? unfortunately VA Doctors are notorious for neglecting veterans with poor medical care

I'm not sure if I have metatarsalgia but it sure sounds like I do. I work at a warehouse walking and standing for long periods of time. I've never had this pain at the ball of my foot in the past 3 years at work. Only thing that changed was my weight gain so I'm assuming I have metatarsalgia. I've tried different shoes and even metatarsalgia pads but it doesn't help. I'm willing to try anything at this point. The pain is unbearable.

Very helpful video. But I have one concern that I wonder about. If so much of this pain is caused by tendons and ligaments being contracted by tight calf muscles, and the patient uses Orthotics effectively, will the patient then become dependent on Orthotics and not be able to use other shoes? Would this make metatarsalgia permanent?

I notice a metatarsal issue last month. I thought maybe a dropped metatarsal and tried to crack it back into place. No pass. Used the ball padding and noticed maybe the shoes was a bit to tighten up at the bottom of the tongue. Loosen them up and gave more space and extra bending. I just hope my metatarsal injury is just a sprang. And will heal in a short time. My fault in tying down the shoes to tight when working outdoors.

I really enjoy your videos. I had Metatarsalgia in my right foot a few years ago, I was injected with cortisone and custom orthotics. They worked great and it went away. I now have developed it in my left foot. It's improving but it does seem to get inflamed after a round of golf. I wasn't wearing my orthotics in my golf shoes but now i will. For walking in wear New Balance 990v5...I noticed in one of the videos you had a Saucony in dark blue. What do you think of the Saucony Glide 15 compared to the New Balance 990 or the model you had in the video.

I was wrongly diagnosed with gout; 4 months later, so much pain my GP said I 'probably' have a torn ligament. Xray didn't reveal much and I now have to wait 4 months for physio before seeing a specialist (this is the NHS as it's worst); pain came on after running. Diagnosed myself with Sesamoiditis. But whatever the diagnosis the pain, which comes and goes but mainly comes with walking (and I'm very active) can't be helped. Today I followed your programme; put the pads under my Superfeet insoles - really helped. Currently rolling my foot on bottle of frozen water. Did the exercises. First day: already vast improvement. Thanks So much. Great video.

I’ll tell you what I have…pain in my foot just below the 2 little toes. I call it the little ball on the outside of my foot. My family Dr says it’s arthritis because I’m 71 yrs old. I asked her to feel around, because a few years ago, I had a ganglion cyst removed from the outside edge of that foot. I know I need to see my podiatrist, but he’s in S. Bend, Indiana. 40 minutes away. I live in Stevensville MI. When I put my shoes on,(Hoka’s) I have to walk on the inside of that foot until the left side settles down into the shoe, then I’m better. Do you have a video for pain around the little, outside ball of the foot? It feel like, if I grabbed the outside of my foot, by the little toes, and rolled the foot inward, if it would pop, crack, release, it would feel better. But it never cracks. How did this come about? I’m sure my breaking boards with that foot, 30 years ago while learning TaeKwondo had something to do with it. I’ve got to find out where you are in Michigan! Thank you!

Seems like its cured. However, I bought the shoes, pads, and inserts you recommended. Question: Do I really need to use the pads if I am not suffering from that specific pain? And with the pads do I need to also put them on the foot that didnt have the metatarsalgia to prevent it happening there?
