I am a beginner bowyer with a love for medieval style longbows. Nine months ago I made my first bow - an ash survival longbow. Since then I've made five more bows, the last a 100lb yew warbow. I am asked many times how I started bow making. Whilst I am not an expert at making bows - a long, long way from that - I am perhaps an expert at being a beginner. So, here are my tips for anyone who wants to make a longbow but doesn't know where to start. I work through all six of my bows, offering tips for anyone hoping to follow a similar path of self-learning and discovery. Watch out for the bloopers at the end!

Mick those of us that make and shoot bow are all still learning and will continue to, I made a bow once that was the best osage orange bow I had ever made ,knot free, straight grained , no twist or crooks . It was the flattest shooting bow ,I had made it for a friend because I told him I'd make one for him ,with a dozen cane arrows fletcher with goose feathers , I've not had such a good bow turn out as that one . My friend and brother cherishes that bow.

I have started a coppice to make bow staves and polearm shafts, on an unused bit of wasteland. It's been enjoyable tending to plants nobody cares about and knowing they have all been assigned a purpose later for skills I want to master later. Also planted 40 new hazel, 20 new ash and 20 yew in the hopes that there will be staves waiting for another generation of Bowyer. I wish archery was still a treasured part of English culture

I found a nice stave of cherry wood the other day. When I started working on it I found it's got a hollow running the whole length of the the stave. Still working on it. It's a beautiful piece of wood. (Edit) Ouch as of 5 minutes ago the stave has snapped.

I am an old American hunter who started making bows and arrows as a kid on our farm in the Blueridge foothills of North Carolina. I started hunting with a recurve in the late 1960's and hunted until I got old and crippled and can no longer hunt. Still interested in the bow and arrow I began making arrows the American Indian way a few years ago complete with knapping out quartz arrowheads. Lately I got the idea of making an English longbow. I got on youtube to get some ideas and came across your site. You convinced me so I went to the woods this morning and cut a tree. I split it into 4 staves and put them in my barn to dry. There is no ashe or yew in my area, but we do have hickory and as I understand it that is mostly what the local indians used. I am enjoying your videos and I thank you for putting them on. I also agree with something someone else said below, you would make a great teacher.

As George Peppard used to say in the A-Team; "I love it when a plan comes together." I have been watching all of your longbow videos and I have come to admire your ability to use your skill as a film maker to introduce us to your new passion. Still I noticed one thing. As a beginner at many new hobbies I always get frustrated at the need for one more thing. Be it a tool, or a material, or a bit of knowledge. Right now it is a set of c-clamps. But I know once I get those c-clamps it will only be one more step to getting that one last thing. Ever experienced that situation? lol
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 7 жыл бұрын
Ha ha. It can be like a disease can't it, that need for one extra bit of kit. But at least with bow-making, you soon run out of stuff that you need because you don't need much. Just remind yourself that for centuries bows have been made without many tools at all - and definitely no C clamps! I actually get a kick from making do with what I have around me - a tree for a vice, a foot for a stop, a log for a weight to stop the stave moving. Anyway, I appreciate you watching my bow videos. I hope I can keep you coming back! Atb, Mick

I will continue to watch your channel. I am always amazed at how you find new ways to build tension into a scene. The long shot on the tea kettle comes to mind. And yes you are right about needing one more thing being a bit of a disease. I call it the Law of One More Thing.

I am in the planning stage of making my first wooden bow. Before, I made bows and arrows with PVC piping and materials from crafts store. The arrows were made from poplar dowels and fetching from duct tape. I've gone through many iterations that I've learned to add reflex and deflex; My last bow looks almost like an Asiatic composite bow with siyahs. Now, im ready use less modern materials such as real woods, horn, and feathers. I hope to make a composite with horn and sinew to reinforcement after a few self-bows

Hello! Thank you for watching my video and sending me a comment. Appreciated. Good luck with your journey into bow-making using traditional materials, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've never made a bow from synthetic materials, but there is undoubted skill in doing so. However, using natural and traditional materials will take your skills and knowledge in a different direction, laying down multiple layers of experience with each bow you make. I am only a novice but I'm gradually learning to understand the materials and how they can be worked in to a bow. Good luck! Mick

Is there a downside to "rushing" the drying process by shaping the stave partway? If there isn't I wonder why it isn't done that way as a matter of course. I love your videos. Greetings from South Louisiana.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 7 жыл бұрын
+Gabriel G Louw Hello Gabriel, my knowledge is limited and I can only tell you about my experience. When hurrying the drying, the wood may twist or crack; a slowly dried stave might not suffer these risks. In terms of history and how our ancestors made bows, speeding up the drying process may have been quite normal. Could they afford to wait many years? Yes if there was routine manufacture of bows for military campaigns then a process could have established that factored slow seasoning into the production cycle. But what about a hunter who needed a bow quickly? I think we know little of what happened centuries ago and maybe what is normal now might not have been all those years ago. Thanks for watching - appreciated! Mick

Hi Mick, id love to see you post a build along for a tri-lam elb or flat bow design. I think you have a knack for explaining the process very throughly and I personally enjoy watching. I actually have a bunch of spare laminates that I've been waiting to make into bows and I'd be willing to donate them to you if you could pay the shipping I wouldn't charge anything else for them. Your pick of wood, I have Ipe, action bamboo, ash, Purple Heart, padauk. I think I used all my hickory so the only one that'd make a good backing would be maybe ash.
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 7 жыл бұрын
Wow Kyle, that's so very kind of you. The only problem is that I am not set up for, nor can create adequate space, in which to form and glue up laminates. I've never done a laminate bow from that stage. It's such a kind offer and I wish there was a sensible way that I could put them to use - but I regret to say I don't think I can take up your very thoughtful offer. I may however soon have a go at a 'flatbow' - or at least a primitive version of a wide/flat bow. I don't really know how to thank for for such a kind and thoughtful gesture and wish I was in a better position to accept. Apologies. Mick

Mick Grewcock I completely understand that. It's taken me a couple years to get my shop set up so I could do lam bows. Id definitely like to see a flat bow build along video. I've had a lot of success with hickory, White & red oak flat bows in the past. Hopefully I'll be making some elm lams and selfies in the next year or so. Oh and btw, that's pretty cool your first bow is still functional. My first bow is a disaster and it had a splinter lift up.

Could u make a hazel bow without seasoning the wood and to you carve the bow before of after u season it Great video
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, yes you could but it might be very springy and soon lose its power - though it would be great practise. The bow can be shaped before seasoning but you must be careful the wood doesn't warp when drying. Traditionally bow woods are seasoned first then shaped and tillered - though with care you can roughly shape a bow stave when green then carefully season (it will be quicker than the whole wood seasoning) with the stave fixed to a strong, straight edge to stop it warping. Then you should have a much more rapid seasoning and be able to finish the bow sooner. Hope that helps. Atb, Mick

Great video Mick. I`ve been making bows for 4 years now and still consider myself a beginner. I`ve made only flatbows but this really makes me want to try an english longbow. By the way, theres a great forum at "primitivearcher.com". a very supportive comunity that I`ve learnd a lot from. very recommended.

I have a question Mr. Grewcock. A friend of mine own a Crochet Business, and occasionally makes videos on KZfaq for just relaxing and others which are educational. They are very high quality, but can sometimes be a bit bland with just a fire in a hearth in the background. I was wondering, where do you find your music, especially the sweat, smooth jazz?
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 5 жыл бұрын
Easiest and safest source at no cost is KZfaq itself. Creators have access to a large library of music and sound effects - I used it for several years. It is zero cost and no risk of copyright strikes. There is some great music in the library so worth using. I now use a subscription service which licenses me to use music from a variety of creators but it comes at a cost. It is called Epidemic Sound but there are many similar online services. Basically they promote royalty free music in a vast range of styles which is licensed for youtube and other broadcast platforms either for a fee per track or a monthly subscription - I use the latter. Epidemic's library is large and growing and works very well. You can listen to their music for free. Watch out for some youtube creators who are able to offer a free trial. I suggest your friend uses KZfaq music to start with and then progresses onto a paid service if needed. Good luck to them. Mick

@MickGrewcock 7 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes of course. You will find some information about yew bows in my five part series of videos I made when I built my yew warbow - but I haven't given details of the first yew bow. It is from a branch of yew that was about 2" in diameter at the thickest point and tapering to about an inch. It was harvested and stored in the green for about four months and then I stripped the bark. It was kept indoors for another month and then I began to shape the bow. It took six months from harvest to first arrow. It is about 76" long nock to nock and draws about 40lbs at 29"/30" and is my favourite bow - a very simple self bow with just string grooves in the wood, no horn nocks or strengtheners. The wood is very pale and pretty with lots of character. If you wish to know anything else, just ask! Thanks for watching, Atb from UK. Mick

Hello Tomsun, I don't sell my bows but the cost of a yew self bow with a draw weight of around 100lbs from a reputable bowyer would be between £500-£800. Check out Michael Heinz's Blacksmith77K on the net at warbow dot com. He makes fantastic yew bows. Hope that helps. Mick

i am to an amature bowyer and let me spoil something to you, seasoning is not necessary. what you need is to let it get cozy indoors for 2 weeks then start tillering and then don´t shoot it for more than 2 hours a week for the next 2 months. this has been tried with 5 bows of drawweights from 30 to 40 pounds with 2 seasoned 35 pound bows as reference.
@MickGrewcock
