In this video, I'm using my Panasonic G9 micro four thirds camera with Canon FD lenses. I show you my set up and the adapter I use to mount these older manual lenses to my modern digital camera.
Canon FD lenses have always been known for their high quality. The manual focus is beautifully smooth and they are quite affordable in the used market compared to today's modern auto focus equivalents. I really like using them on both my Canon F1 film camera and adapted onto my G9 when I want to shoot digital.
This is my trip out to a local wildflower meadow where the wild orchids were abundant and in full bloom.

I'm expecting my first couple of FD lenses for mounting on my M43 cameras, and I'm very relieved to hear you say they're easier to manually focus than digital lenses! Photos look magnificent. I wish the lenses came packaged with that kind of photographic nous.

Quick tip for the open-lock mechanism on the FD adapter. Leave the ring on the lock position on the adapter and when you put on any FD lens, make sure the rear lever on the lens goes on before the peg inside the adapter than twist counterclockwise into it goes in.

Actually, I've had better luck on my cheap adapter when the ring is in the open position. Then I mount the lens and rotate the ring to lock. If I mount the lens when the ring is in lock, I've occasionally had the lens' stop down lever on the wrong side of the pin in the adapter. YMMV.

I think you nailed it on the head when you said that vintage glass gives much smoother focusing. Digital lenses have just a little too much resistance when manually focusing. I also think the fall off of focus with old glass is gentler.

@@CraigPrentisPhoto Hi Good People😊 I wonder if someone could help me a bit. I have managed to find locally great condition canon fd lenses. I’ve used k&f fd to m43 adapter with my gx80(my first camera, had it for few weeks). But sadly I ran into some problems. When I use those fd lens(50mm f2), I get black image if I use fairly normal shutter speed(1.25). Only way to get picture is to increase to use long shutter abd high iso. Which basically it makes impossible to shoot from hand. Can someone explain what I’m doing wrong?

That open/lock lets you have it open for initial focusing so you get lots of light. Then you close it to the aperture and look at the depth of field for the lenses. The old Zenit lenses used to have that since the camera didn't automatically close the lens down before shooting.

I have a similar setup, a Canon A1, and FD lenses. I now have a Panasonic G9. I have recently added an adapter/speed booster to use the vintage Canon lenses on the G9. The speed booster reduces that additional crop factor. I figure that my 28mm Canon lens is effectively about 40mm with the speed booster vs the 2 X 28 = 56mm normal crop factor. Your video has inspired me to go out and do some shooting on my G9 with the FD lenses. THANKS!

I couple of years ago I bought an Olympus OM10 with six lenses. I bought it purely for the lenses intending to buy an OM1, but there was something about the OM10 with its shutter speed accessory that soon won me over. It’s now my "colour" 35mm camera because of the quantity of lenses, but I’d love to try those superb Zuiko lenses on a modern digital Olympus. I keep thinking I’ll buy one with an adapter for my old glass. Great images and a brilliant little video. Like with Steve O'Nions channel I come for the great photography both digital and analogue. I don’t believe one medium is 'better' than the other but they do offer totally different experiences. I do have a preferred journey, that of 35mm B&W, because of the type and degree of hands on control I have.

I do the same with an OM40 and a 50mm that I picked a couple of years back. It just gets loaded up with a roll of HP5 and taken out when I need it. Great little set up. Thanks for watching Mark, I appreciate your support.

I personally used a slightly cheaper Gobe FD to M4/3 and it works great with my Olympus E-M5.1. I recommend for people to try out FD lens if they are not to sure about getting an autofocus prime lens as these vintage lens perform great. I personally re-used my FD 28mm /f2.8 & 50mm f/1.4 and it's awesome to give these a second life.

Yes, it makes sense to use these perfectly good older lenses. I'm going to be looking out for a few more as they all seem to have their own quirks and characteristics.

Love those old manual lenses Craig..sadly I sold all bar two of mine but still use the 105mm f/2.5 occasionally but as you say great value secondhand..amazed i don't see more landscape guys using them as the quality of many is superb.....great location, i'm there next week if weather allows

I am setting up to do exactly the same, just with a vivitar label. One video I saw indicated that the ibis had to be set for each focal length, but I wonder if this is really needed.

Very good video, and some really great images! Nice capture of the feelings, sights and sounds of spring. You nicely married the elegance and quality of old glass with new technology of digital. If the storm ease up this afternoon, as forecast, going to take your advice and try some of my old Pentax glass, adapted to Nikon full frame digital. As always, thanks for the absence of the distracting sounds of music, allowing the sounds of spring to come through.

I have quite a few older Nikon ai and ais lenses and love using them. Most of my lenses are the older version, even the af ones and I prefer them over the new ones, even selling most of the newer G series in favor of the D series. Thanks for sharing and I love the colors in those images.

Lens adapters are made with and without the aperture preset ring. I have a Nikon to u4/3 adapter that does not have the aperture lock ring, which means that any lens mounted will always be open to the aperture set on the lens. Since I don't have the lock ring, I must manually open the lens to frame my scene and to focus the lens. I must then stop down the lens to the desired opening (on the lens), refocus if necessary and set the exposure before pressing the shutter. Having the aperture preset ring on the adapter makes life a bit easier, as I can't see the lens Fstop scale through the viewfinder but since most Nikon lenses have detents at each f-stop setting I can just manually count the number of clicks from wide open to get to my desired setting. The adapters with the aperture preset ring are usually a few bucks more expensive than those without.

I Craig thx for your video. I do the same on my Sony A7iii (my FD lenses were sleeping for 30 years....) and true that it s really nice to use for video in manual mode. I just got on my 50mm F1.4 some issues with aperture (common issue for these grand father lenses...) but youtube explains how to solve it. Sony A7iii got the advantage of not having the crop factor vs M43.

I find this very interesting. I have m4/3 on a cheap Pen but seeing you adjust focus via the screen has made me less anxious about trying some older lenses 👍🏻

Hey Craig, thanks for the video. You didn´t put some takes in small apertures where that FDs really rocks, and hyperfocal technique that is very easy to do with that lenses. Of course, that technique with modern AF ? Don´t think so.

When I bought my Panasonic G1 10 years ago I was immediately bored of auto focusing lenses and bought myself an FD 50mm F1.4, I absolutely loved the combo and used it until a couple of years ago when I left it in a taxi! 😢

Nice one Craig! You bring back great retro memories.I still have a couple of F1n ae's to showoff how long I have been a professional photographer! 😂 However, you were smarter than me by being able to forsee the future and holding on to your FD lenses, I sold all of mine except for my 85mm 1.2L when Canon changed their mount to EOS. I now use the 85 on my Panasonic GH5 and Canon M5, which I combine with the metabones speedbooster for the Panny and the Viltrox for the Canon thus giving me many differing focal lengths from the same lens. I agree with you that these fly by wire lenses are not fun or accurate to use for those of us who have manual focusing in our DNA. There is a glimmer of hope for the future in this regard in that some of the latest mirrorless cameras are getting linear focusing software built in, to drive these lenses in the way we are accustomed but without true hard stops such as the new Panasonic S1 and S1r, you can even programme in how much focus throw you might desire which old helical manual lenses cannot do! 🙏🏾

Thanks Eugene. I had the Canon 85 1.2 before selling most of my Canon gear. It's a nice lens. I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to full frame but the S1 + S1R look interesting - maybe something for the future? It's good to know that Panasonic are in the game with the other manufacturers now (if full frame is your thing) as I like their cameras and they seem like a beefed up version of their M4/3 bodies.

Actually Craig the last full frame camera I ever owned was the Canon 1Vh film camera which I still own in near mint condition. I have mainly used Canon APSC and recently MFT for digital. I find APSC a nice compromise in features, price and lens options for my photography. Panasonic MFT is superb for video features and is a surprisingly excellent backup for my photographic needs. All the recent full frame cameras that have come out are nice but as of yet not wowing me enough to invest in them. I have fast glass, so even MFT works for me in low light especially with speed boosters, so hopefully I can avoid the temptation of GAS! Who knows, maybe now that I have discovered your channel, you might inspire me enough to buy a roll or two of film and rediscover the joy that first attracted me to the art! 🤣🙏🏾

I really enjoyed this video and I've used several Canon FD lenses on my M43 cameras. Now that I have IBIS on my G9, the big telephotos are a lot of fun, too. I have found the Canon FD 400mm f/4.5 to be quite sharp even wide open and with less CA than you might think. Reading Canon Lens Work informs us this lens as low dispersion glass, even though its not an L lens. I also have enjoyed the Canon FD 200mm f/2.8 (latest IF version) which is also quite nice even wide open. I'm also currently restoring a Canon FD 85-300mm f/4.5 lens and hope it performs as well. Sadly, I sold my near-mint Canon FD 135 f/2 years ago and now the prices seem quite high to replace it. I also discovered the Pixco speedbooster (Canon FD-to-M43) works quite well on these lenses. This speedbooster is available under various brand names and has good reviews here and other places.

I'm actually going to be picking up a couple of my first Canon FD lenses - I already won a few third party lenses in the mount(like a Vivitar 28mm f2 for instance) and while looking for zooms to fill the 35-100mm(70-200mm effective) I came across two that seem extremely interesting: the Canon nFD 35-105mm f3.5 & the FD 50-135mm f3.5. The 35-105mm is correct but 2/3 stop slower than a f2.8 but is still a constant aperture, the 50-135mm on the other hand is a 70-190mm f2.5 effective with a speedbooster. Apparently they are both outstanding lenses, but I have concerns about resolution without the use of a speedbooster. Like the nFD 35-105mm I've been looking at different zooms like the Sigma 28-105mm f2.8-4 & 35-135mm f2.8-4.5, the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, and a bunch of different Vivitar zooms with good feedback like the Komine made Series 1 28-90mm f2.8-3.5. How well can a 2x crop resolve these full frame zooms? Are they usable?

I haven't used any of the lenses you mentioned there so I can't really comment. I still also have my Canon 70-200mm f2.8 from when I had Canon EF gear and use it with a speedbooster on my G9 - it works very well (99-284mm f2 equivalent). Thanks for watching.

Very enjoyable Craig. I have a few FD lenses that I used on the XT1 when I had that so will give this a go with the G9 sometime. Loved the shot from above of the dandelion puff ball. The images I thought had a feel to them that was unlike digital which may or may not have been something to do with the lens choice? Anyway, I liked it.

Take a look at a metabones adaptor.. will shorten your lenses focal length and speed it up by about stop. David Thorpe does an interesting video..

Good work! Nice images, especially the one looking down on the dandelion, some others as well. Currently I use FD lenses on my Canon M5 and they perform really well and give a look that is unique in their rendition, just fabulous. In that case the 28mm gets you closer to normal. What would be interesting is to see how they would do on the new Canon full-frame mirrorless; I suspect in that case the corners may not be sharp due to the angle of the light and the lens design and the micro lenses on the sensor. But I hear talk of possible sensors that may have some depth to them i.e. like how film has a bit of thickness to the emulsion. As for APSC format, that 70-210 does a great job of just about equaling my nice Fuji glass, really really close. Which when you consider the M5 uses an additional filter on the sensor that Fuji does not, perhaps the performance would be even stronger on the Fuji. Camera shake is the only downside and taking longer to focus, but taking a bit longer etc. makes for better images for me. I have not tried them on my G9. Best wishes!

I find the G9's stabilisation is very good and even makes using these longer lenses possible at fairly low shutter speeds. Thanks for your comments and I'm glad you liked the images.

I can’t remember what make it was (possibly Panasonic or Fuji I think?) but one brand has started letting you set in software to have your focus be linear so you can repeat focus throws and even set what degree of rotation is from near to far. Still not as good as hard stops of manual lenses but at least a step in the right direction for focus by wire lenses.

That's interesting to hear. I don't enjoy manually focusing with my AF lenses. I can understand where the manufacturers are coming from. You build a sophisticated bit of equipment designed for autofocus but you're also including the facility to manual focus too which isn't really their main priority. Hopefully they may get better if what you say is right. Cheers.

I shoot film alot and us a Canon t90 and a FD 400MM 2.8 for my wildlife and 1.4 and 2x telexonverter. Some time I adapt the lenses to my Canon 6D, mostly when I shoot video.

I use a Mamiya Supsr 23 with a 100mm lens and in 6x9, for landscape. I use rear movements from time-to-time. Enjoy your videos.

Would be interested to see what you think of focal reducers like the Zhongyi Lens Turbo ii for FD to Micro Four Thirds. I have one and use my FD lenses with my G85. Not sure as to how much it affects image quality.

There's a Metabones mft to FD speedbooster with a .71x crop. Alternatively, there is the Zhongyi Lens Turbo II, which has .72x crop and is around a quarter of the price. I use the Zhongyi and absolutely love it. Currently building up my FD kit. I have a 24mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 35mm f2.8 and the 70-210mm f4 plus the Zhongyi - total cost still over £100 cheaper than the Metabones on it's own!

Great Vid! question - I own a Bmpcc 4k along with a micro 4/3rds Speed Booster(Viltrox) do these lens work with that type of set up? thx!

I'm not sure. I have a Metabones Speedbooster and I think it works like your Viltrox (i.e. M4/3 body to modern electronic lenses). The adapter used here works fine with old Canon manual lenses only but I can't use it to adapt to Canon EF lenses.

Hello, nice video. We have quite the same setup. I own a Lumix GX80 which I bought with a 12-32 Vario but I soon added a 50mm nFD f1.4 and a 28mm nFD f2.8. I am wondering, because I found one very cheap in my area, if it makes sense to add the same FD zoom that you have to my kit, maybe for some stealth street portraits. Is it usable for this purpose in your opinion? Cheers.

I don’t see why not. I’m sure it would be perfectly usable for street especially if you want to keep your distance as it has a long reach at the 210mm (x2) end.

Canon FD lenses are built as a tank ! I got a collection very similar to Craig's one (but old FD mount) and use them on my Sony A7iii. True that they very nice to use in manual focus and as Sony lenses are crazy expensive , I swept them up and use them ... after 20 years of sleep :)

all these FD lenses not compatible to the sharpness of modern lenses. if you want fuzzy wuzzy you got it. but you can replicate the softness which is the main characteristic of FD and older lenses with a flick or 2 in lightroom. So why bother? Get a good modern lens and leave this crap at the salvation army.
