Is anyone else feeling really good that vegan KZfaq is officially transforming into a group of rational, thoughtful, nuanced creators who are capable of addressing complex topics with grace, compassion, and humor??? This was so well done, Mic, and thank you for the mention! thank you so much for mentioning the factor about eating disorders, i really needed to hear that. as a 15 year-old vegan who has been struggling with anorexia since i was 11, avoiding oils was not beneficial to me. i ended up in another restrictive pattern and i accidentally lost weight (which is not good at all, since i'm already skinny). i still prefer to choose whole foods for the most part, but i'm no longer afraid to eat the meals that my mom cooks for me, which always tend to have oil in them.
@RabbitFoodFitness

That's wonderful to hear. I recently started including more fat in my diet as well, mostly from peanut butter. I am thin too and have had issues when I would eat mostly whole foods with gaining weight.
@BryceRogers_

I second that. Like you said, I needed to hear this. I finished my college swimming career one year ago. During training I was putting down almost 4500 calories per day, but I was remaining 19% BMI. After a year of having drastically lower appetite, I have dropped below 17. Incorporating more coconut olive and/or avocado can really help me eat a higher volume. My body is still accustomed to metabolizing 3000+ calories per day, but my intake has dropped because I’m not swimming 5 miles per day anymore (not an exaggeration). So thank you to Mic for putting this video out.

@TheMatron'sMilitia Vegan flexitarian? That's not vegan, vegan is absolute avoiding eating, drinking, using and exploiting animals, but it's not necessarily not wearing wool, it's simply not wearing things from dead animals, note, blood is not vegan even if the animal is alive because it's exploitation of animals. Vegan is defined as: a strict vegetarian who doesn't eat, drink, use, or wear or go to entertainments of animal cruelty and animal exploitation, especially from dead animals. Honey is vegan, but in reality it's quasi-vegan because it's beegan.

@TheMatron'sMilitia They're also part of a subkingdom that includes all animals except for sponges. Bees are insects, so what? I love insects, I don't use anything from an exploited or dead bee, therefore beeganism is veganism with a future for bee farmers, rather than veganism with heart. I'll be vegan my way, you you be vegan your way, and furthermore ", as far as is possible and practicable", not no matter what, therefore I'm going as far as I can go to avoid exploitation and cruelty to animals. You're not telling me the truth with your thoughts, you're just telling me the truth of the textbook definition, you're not the definition and you know you're outveganing other vegans.

How does a pun on the concept of having some plant oil in your vegan diet turn into a darn scrap about honey between vegan fanatics!? Seriously! Now I use a little olive oil here and there, although my oil consumption is still relatively low, and I’ve been much happier. at least for now, as a relatively healthy 20 year old, i think it’s more important to focus on a healthy relationship with food than being fully oil free, and I think maybe this is true for others too

Yeah, I never add oil to any food I make, nor do I cook with it. I'm one of those Ornish/Esselstyn types who simply has to avoid oils, and I'm vey happy with that, don't miss it at all. I vey occasionally eat food with oil if I'm at a restaurant, once in a blue moon, but even there I try to avoid it. That being said, for folks who are just going vegan and adjusting to it, I wouldn't advise worrying about oil right away - just get accustomed to the basics and work on un-refining things (removing refined foods) later.

Thanks for this video! I am pro-oil precisely for this reason. As someone who has struggled with body dysmorphia and plenty of food-fear over the years, an important part of getting better was realizing that, for me, the risks of oil were always an excuse to avoid putting in "unnecessary" calories. But I wouldn't replace those calories with other healthy foods; I'd go without, hoping that I might lose even more weight. Another thing a person with an eating disorder might do is use the argument that "BMI is not an indicator of health" in order to justify a dangerously low weight. While BMI certainly isn't the whole picture, I appreciate you addressing that, and I appreciate you tossing the numbers up on the screen. And while the number of folks with an eating disorder are low, thank goodness, I would argue that MANY people have a disordered relationship with food, and this video is for those people, too. As you said, this is a level-headed take on the subject. Thanks again.

This BMI Things is always worrying me. My whole life i was underweight (according to the BMI) as an omnivore, as a vegetarian and still as a vegan (I'm vegan for almost 10 years now). At the moment i weigh 53 kg and am 1,73 m tall, that makes an 17,7 BMI: underweight. I have no eating disorder whatsoever, never had. Mostly i am eating a whole food diet (because it feels good and i want to, not because i force myself), but do not restrict myself if i crave a cookie or something in the "unhealty sweets"-category. As an experiment i tried to stay away from oil completely (i still used it for cooking to that point) for two month or so. I lost 3kg (i was at 55kg) - i have no idea if the weight loss was because of the "oil-abstinence" or stress or something else. I actually didn't event notice, but as soon as i did (on a bathroom scale not the mirror) i added oil again. But it is and always was so hard for me to gain weight - almost impossible. I eat a normal amount of calories and even if i eat more than that...not gaining weight...i guess my body just burns it in seconds. I would't worry too much, because i am healty and feel fine, but this BMI-calculation is just so frustrating.

@BetweenFireAndFire
@BetweenFireAndFire 5 жыл бұрын
@@gSWG3R Yes, exactly. Even if there were some positive effects from cutting oil, I just wanted to say that for me it's overall acutally healthier to still use oil in moderation (as Mic said). But i think it's always interesting to try out adding or excluding certain things for a short period of time (and always with your health in mind!), because you can learn so much about your body. I think with our industrial, processed food with its overpowering fat, oil and/or sugar (and with that a permanent triggering of the "reward centers" in our brain), we lost a sense of "food-wisdom". Meaning: Knowing what your body needs given a certain activity/situation. So shoutout to (actually) Try and (maybe) Error. ;)

For you it would be healthier to use oil in moderation rather than avoid it altogether, or perhaps to select foods higher in fat (like avacado, olives, or tahini, for instance). Also, be sure you get enough protein. Most people don't have that problem, though, but somebody who is underweight should be focusing on getting enough calories.

I've struggled with my weight on a vegan diet for years but now I'm learning to cook without oils and I'm staying away from foods that have oil and the weight is really starting to come off now. You are totally right, oil really is the champ for weight gain. My goal is to stay in the low range on your chart. Can you explain why the new nutritional facts tables don't calculate the fat properly?
@sheilasherret9596
@sheilasherret9596 5 жыл бұрын
The reason calories from fat aren't being calculated anymore is because the FDA is more interested in how much added sugar is in a serving. They stopped doing calories from fat when they forced the added sugar category.

Just a thought on your progression of oil progression chart: selecting for omega 3 rich oils/oils low in omega 6 while still using oil in small amounts at home might be lower on the scale than eating oils when not at home, depending on a) the amounts used (spraying tofu before ovenbaking it vs. making mayo, even "low fat" one) and b) the frequency of eating out. For someone eating out/eating things other people prepared rather regularly, the total amount of oil might be difficult to get down as compared to someone who homecooks 13 of 14 days and occasionally sprays a pan with olive oil and that's it. I overcame a very stubborn weightloss plateau that way ;)

@@florencescheepers9736 Eating disorders can be threatened yes, but its usually just a symptom of some underlying issue. Unless its resolved, you will most likely just find other ways to self harm/sabotage that are not so obvious. I dont believe that there are people who only have an "eating disorder", as it would not have any use or function. It would be just utterly pointless behavior. Eating is so basic core function, much like sex that it mirrors the person inner landscape quite well.

I really really appreciate you making this video and clarifying your views about oil. I'm anorexic, currently at a stable weight, and I really wrestled with the decision to include oils in my diet when I was trying to gain weight from a BMI below 15. I just didn't know if it was healthy. Eating WFPB and nourishing my body is self-care for me, not disordered or restrictive, so my problem with oil was more about that and less about the caloric density/food fear component.

I'm moving slowly but surely towards a whole food diet but I still occasionally buy mockmeats and use canola to fry things up a little. After I convinced my mom to quit dairy she started to make her own nut milk and after we blend and strain it we started using the clumpy bits from the strainer as an oil substitute. It actually works great because it's fatty and coats food really well

I wish we could move the conversation away from BMI. It was only ever meant for use with population statistics, not individual health. Lots of things make it inappropriate including, as you mentioned, high muscle mass. A better metric for individuals (that has high statistical linkage to health outcomes) is waist to hip ratio. Even waist size alone is a better health predictor than BMI. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waist%E2%80%93hip_ratio
