Make no mistake, this is a vegan hit piece that only makes negative claims against a vegan diet for intelligence and overall brain health. The errors, out of date research, and exclusion of any positive points deserves a debunk.

This one was a doozie of research and in the fray I made a point that is not fully valid. While it wasn't actually a topic mentioned in the BBC article, thanks to you guys I now see that the sex ratio in India is overwhelmingly caused by Male selection. Men are favored so gender screening which is now illegal has played a role in this ratio. That being said, I stand by the point that vegan women aren't going to be having a nutrient deficiency-based lower male birth rate.

@@goku445 I think that is more likely a corrolation. Meaning - people with higher IQ are more likely to become vegetarian/vegan and raise kids that way, too. I grew up vegetarian because of my highly educated mom who decided to study nutrition and eat ethically in her 20s. She has been vegetarian for 30 years now. She has become a junk food vegetarian, though. In other words I have never eaten meat, just limited eggs and a lot of dairy, before I went vegan at 22. And here I am - in the middle of my own university degree, preforming above average. I think we know by now that an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant rich, ethically conscious diet that forces you to educate yourself on nutrition will be better for you overall. And honestly I wouldn't eat animals even if it was proved that my IQ would drop a few points, just because it is the right thing to do. Low IQ is probably very highly corrolated with a shitty and unethical diet, at the opposite end.

I don't know about that, but it seems that intelligent people tend to abstain from eating meat. Some intelligent, widely admired people who chose not to eat meat- Pythagoras, Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Voltaire, Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Nikolai Tesla, Albert Einstein, Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer, George Bernard Shaw, Tolstoy, Thoreau, Saint Francis of Asisi, Nobel laureate and holocaust survivor Isaac Bashevis Singer, and many more. Some on this list switched late in life, but stayed on it to the end. Ben Franklin switched at age 16. "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." -Einstein (Of course today, he would be vegan. So would the others on this list.) The famous Professor of Physics Brian Greene is vegan. You may have seen him on PBS hosting science shows for the layman. Jane Goodall recently went from a long time vegetarian to vegan. Greta Thunberg is vegan. Jon (Daily Show) Stewart is not only vegan, he owns a farm animal sanctuary! Alex O'Connor, aka Cosmic Skeptic is an atheist who eloquently lays out the ethical requirement to be vegan in his video "A Meat Eater's Case for Veganism." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZemipyauNawfJ8.html

I'm glad to hear it! That is probably due to the removal of many processed foods (most of which are plant-based). I've posted some studies for you to consider - I do follow a Carnivore Diet. Vegetarian Diet Affects Genes of Oxidative Metabolism and Collagen Synthesis www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18772587 “Compared with volunteers with traditional eating habits, carbohydrate consumption was significantly higher (+22%) in vegetarians. This was associated with a significant stimulation of CPT1A (+50%) and OCTN2 (+10%) and a lowered collagen synthesis (-10%). *These novel findings provide further insight into the association of a changed fat metabolism and reduced collagen synthesis in vegetarians, which could also play a role in the aging process.* " Green tea extract only affects markers of oxidative status postprandially: lasting antioxidant effect of flavonoid-free diet www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/12064344/ "Since no long-term effects of GTE [Green Tea Extract] were observed, the study essentially served as a fruit and vegetables depletion study. *The overall effect of the 10-week period without dietary fruits and vegetables was a decrease in oxidative damage to DNA, blood proteins, and plasma lipids, concomitantly with marked changes in antioxidative defence.* " Meaning Stress / Antioxidant markers improved by removing Polyphenols from vegetables Effects of High-Protein Versus High-Carbohydrate Diets on Markers of β-Cell Function, Oxidative Stress, Lipid Peroxidation, Proinflammatory Cytokines, and Adipokines in Obese, Premenopausal Women Without Diabetes www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3687312/ " *This study was funded by the American Diabetes Association* (1-09-CR-32 [A.E.K., prinicipal investigator]). Diabetes Care. 2013 Jul; 36(7): 1919-1925." “ *The HP [High Protein] diet produced a significantly greater decrease than the HC [high Carb] diet in the levels of oxidative stress, inflammatory markers, and cardiovascular risk factors* ... Comparison of FFA [Free Fatty Acids] results were of interest, indicating a significant increase after 6 months on the HC diet suggesting greater lipolysis with HC diet after 6 months (P < 0.001) as contrasted to levels of FFA, which were significantly lower in the HP group after 6 months.” Food intake diet and sperm characteristics in a blue zone: a Loma Linda Study www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27280539 “ *The study showed that the vegetables-based food intake decreased sperm quality.* In particular, a reduction in sperm quality in male factor patients would be clinically significant and would require review. *Furthermore, inadequate sperm hyperactivation in vegans suggested compromised membrane calcium selective channels.* "

Ariel Venner anti aging experts in the field completely agree that meat accelerates aging and plant antioxidants are the best forms of antiaging such as resveratrol. you’re research is very slim and bias towards the over arching body of research of anti aging. the best way to produce more collagen is by boosting your own production through antioxidants, choline and silica, vitamin C, and plant phenols and phytochemicals.

@@Ariel-oo1nc I'm happy you're presenting your points respectfully unlike others who go straight into name calling. I'm sure your points are correct to some extent because meat does supply you with nutrients that are good for your body, but just like anything else there are things in meat that do not 100% benefit you. I didn't go vegan due to the health benefits it would have on me but because I have seen too many mistreated animals and I will not support the corporations in their unethical ways. Even if there grass fed and free roaming, you still end up killing them. Scientists can't figure out how our brain works but they quickly jump to conclusions that animals don't have feeling or aren't emotionally on the same level as us. If I can live without hurting others then I much rather do that than eat eggs, drink milk and bite into a steak. The health benefits came secondary and I am impressed how much overall my health improved. I was always health conscious since I was born with a heart condition that requires me to stay fit and healthy. I always avoided processed foods, excess fat and sugar. This however wasn't enough. At age of 23 my blood pressure became elevated. I have had heartburns since I was 12. Tums were in every back pack and bed stand I ever had. I would get migraines with an aura about once a week, and I felt generally weak and struggled to keep up with my peers. I was always slower in catching the jokes, I was bad at math, I was forgetful and I felt like I didn't have the mental capacity to achieve big things in life. as of the physical aspect, I blamed my heart for it until I decided to go vegan and things have changed greatly. First was the heartburn that went away completely, then my blood pressure dropped back to normal and even lower 110/70. About 4 months in, my migraines stopped and I felt more energetic. My mind cleared and I was absorbing information just by skimming the textbook page vs in the past where I had to re read that page slowly 3-4 times. I started figuring math problems in my head and things that I found as complex and complicated, suddenly made sense. I am now a year and 3 months in. I got my labs taken and everything is within a normal healthy range. I don't supplement other than B12 once every now and then. I became regular in my bathroom schedules and overall I do not regret doing this one bit. I grew up in Poland where my family had a farm. We had fresh milk, eggs, beef, pork, turkey and chicken. My family didn't use antibiotics, hormones in their livestock as they weren't mass producing. This was just for us and maybe some of the close family friends. You would think that this is the place where you want your meat to come from and today these studies suggest that we should go back to those ways for meat and dairy to be healthy. Sadly, my grandparents, aunts and uncles, despite eating what they grew naturally all had serious health issues. Heart disease, cancer, dementia and diabetes type 2. They didn't live until they were a 100. Not even close. So I am doing things differently and if it leads me into a more fruitful, healthier life then I will know for sure that this is what our bodies work on best.

And some researchers have another hypothesis that it was cooking vegetables that made us human "the German Society for Nutrition went so far as to categorically state that - for children, pregnant or nursing women, and adolescents - vegan diets are not recommended" The german society for nutrition has 4000 members, while the 'academy of nutriotion and dietetics' which is the largest nutrition organization on earth consisting of tens of thousands has said that a vegan diet is perfectly fine for all life stages including pregnancy Now about the research, this is an extremly low quality research which cant be taken seriously at all, first of all it was nigerian children which may already not consume enough calories, secondly, of course, if you replace meat wil nothing, than the meat group is going to do better, they didnt replace meat with a bean soup and some seeds, and if they would then the results would be completely different As for the nutrient claims Creatine, carnosine, taurine are not essential for the body and our body can produce them on its own Omega 3 as they said is found in plants Our body can produce vitamin d on its own And the only one that vegans can get from the diet is b12, which we supplement B6 that is simply not true, one banana has a third of the daily needs and many other plant foods have it as well Iron is found in many plants as well.. my iron levels for example are much higher now than they were when i was eating meat I stopped reading here The BBC is heavily funded by the meat dairy and egg indutries and they are known for propoganda against vegans for a long time, the article isnt based on science, it is meant to scare people

Despite eating a "whole food, plant based diet" and supplementing everything which I was supposed to, my health rapidly declined and I was at risk of serious longterm health consequences because of what I was eating, or more so, what I WASN'T eating. So I whole-heartedly reserve the right to say FUCK Dr Greger and FUCK anyone else who peddles this anti-human and unnatural diet. Humans ARE omnivores. Veganism is dangerous and the people who would force this ideology on others are also dangerous.

I introduced animal products again, tried a "balanced" diet, put a little bit of butter in my coffee (i don't even drink coffee daily) and i feel blessed you guys. In those 2 years of beig vegan i forgot how it feels to eat in this "balanced", "optimal" way. I started feeling like a child again. Do you know how i felt growing up? Lazy, my sleep quality went to shit, i started getting dizzy during workouts again, and my morning glory was kinda.. lacking. I developed dandruff, itchy bumps and rashes on my skin, i started getting enormous hunger pains in the morning, and i was almost always constipated... I've finally admitted to myself that i had digestive problems all of my life, and despite the constant bloating and loose stool in those 2 years being vegan, i still felt better than ever! Now i'm eating only plants again, excepting the ones that cause symptoms, and i'm saving up to take GojiMan's tests and finally get my health back on track for real this time!

Whoa, Mic, keep being as logical as possible. Vegans having more emotional intelligence because they are more empathetic to animals may have a lot to do with why they became vegan in the first place, not their diet. The higher rate of males in India might relate, sadly, to the higher rate of males in China, which has nothing to do with diet, and everything to do with female infanticide (look it up). Your point about duck weed having B12 has some validity, but how many of us eat duck weed. Note: it grows like mad in my outdoor fish and plant pots!! The point about cholesteral and altzheimers applies to older people, whereas the accussations against the vegan diet are for all ages. Also note that defenerative diseases of the brain and underlying intelligence are not the same thing. Further, we can't just dismiss a study because of who funded it, and call it a day. While that definitely shows a bias, we need to show superior contrary evidence coming from science. Just because people have a vested interest in a certain outcome does not necessarily mean the study is rigged, or that the outcome is wrong. Imagine you were a billionaire and funded a study to find determine the effectiveness of duck-weed B12 in a Vegan diet (after investing in harvesting duck weed and making supplements). Other than those minor caveats, great job as usual. Really appreciate these videos.

@asukachan07
@asukachan07 4 жыл бұрын
Short answer: check Mic's video on oil. Long answer: that's true about WHOLE veg sources of saturated fats because those either come along with healthier unsaturated fat (avocados, whole olives) or are saturated fats that are easily used as energy (whole or shredded coconut flesh). NOT true for processed oils (olive, coconut, palm, etc.). For some reason people still think that vegetable oils are healthy. They are the lipid equivalent of refined sugars! If someone doesn't have any existing heart conditions and consume an adequate amount of plant whole foods, a bit of vegetable oil in cooking now and then isn't going to hurt their blood vessels anyways.
