Not a song I listen to very often. "It takes strength to be gentle and kind" is the stand out line.

I read a comment once on KZfaq explaining why this song is perfect: the instrumental accompanies Morrissey's voice, it adds components as the song progresses, sometimes it goes up and when it seems that it is going to explode it goes down again, like depression . And the ending is just beautiful. Definitely my favorite song from The Smiths.

Hey Wally...For your further consideration...(by The Smiths)...Still Ill...Panic...Shoplifters of the World Unite...Cemetry Gates...Vicar in a Tutu...Frankly Mr Shankly...and Oscillate Wildly (which is an instrumental). All good stuff which i'm sure you're already well aware of. Also two films you might find interesting..."England is Mine" an account of young Steven Morrisey's life before he went onto form The Smiths with Johnny Marr...in fact Marr only appears in the last seconds of the film. This is more about the kind of life he lead and the influences that would eventually inform all the great music to come. So best not to go into expecting to hear any of The Smiths music, as that would be more appropriate in a "sequel" if anyone were ever to do a movie about their rise to fame. The other film is "24 Hour Party People" about the explosion of talent from Manchester in the 1980's following the rise of punk in the late 70's as seen through the eyes of Tony Wilson (played by Steve Coogan) a tv presenter who forms a record label that signed up the likes of Joy Division, Happy Mondays and New Order. Though not The Smiths, much to T. Wilson's regret. It's a glorious evocation of the period, with all the kind of sex, drugs and rock n roll you'd expect, done with such style you'll feel yourself tapping your feet, and smiling, and wanting to check out the music of all those great bands. Enjoy!

absolutely one of the saddest, most tragic of The Smiths tracks, as part of its inspiration came from the horrible Moors Murders, committed by Ian Brady and Myra Hindely of five children. These terrible crimes resounded for years to come and would've been a haunting presence in the minds of any adult and child from the mid-1960's onward. As ever, Morrisey never talks just about one thing, though i think in some ways he was trying to make sense of what could possibly lead such people to do what they did. The contrast between partners in crime, connected by something so dreadful , yet unable to empathise for their victims. How can you love at all and still murder innocents? Shocking and appalling and oh so heartbreaking, it sums up the feelings of desolation and numbness that was wrought of a lot of Brit post war sensibility. That this was the "thrill" that two people resorted to is nightmarish, but beautifully captured by The Smiths in this romantically funereal dirge.
