Is the current vegan trend in bodybuilding real?
Earlier this year, a documentary called The Game Changers was released detailing how meat-based diets are unnecessary and that humans can and should go plant-based. The film made headlines in the bodybuilding world for one big reason - Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared in the film hating on meat and regretting his past chowing down on massive amounts of beef. Shortly after, Kai Greene made a mysterious post on social media implying that he might go vegan. It went viral - and now we are in the era of veganism in bodybuilding. Or are we?
In our latest sit down interview with Mike Rashid, we discussed the vegan trend that seems to be developing in bodybuilding. Rashid had publicly gone plant-based in years past (though he is no longer vegan) and has some experience with how a vegan diet can affect a physique when it comes to bodybuilding and mass monster status. Can a bodybuilder maintain massive muscle on a level like Ronnie Coleman or Kai Greene while only eating meat? And is this really a trend that will catch on in bodybuilding? Or is it just a flash in the pan.
While Mike Rashid was happy with the results of his vegan diet - he does admit it came with a lot of weight loss. This is weight he wanted to lose personally but for a bodybuilder looking to come on stage and do damage with a body size like Brandon Curry or Big Ramy... that might be more of a stretch without meat in your diet.
Mike Rashid expands on the conversation by also discussing intermittent fasting - a diet that has caught on not just in bodybuilding but in mainstream fitness culture across the globe. You can check it all out in our latest GI Exclusive interview above.

When I cut meat out of my diet and went vegan, it cured my anxiety/depression, I lost 65 lbs, I slept so much better after having panic attacks for almost a year trying to fall asleep, and it helped my thyroid disorder. It completely changed my life. I wish people would stop labeling vegans as this kind of crazy cult. I think they misinterpret the passion we have for how good we feel and the incredible differences we notice being vegan. It's so amazing, I wish more people.

Also quit veganism after two years because it was very inconvenient and expensive way back then. But because it’s more popular now, its a lot easier and cheaper and decided to try again this year. Very excited. I know I’m going to feel really good!

I follow plant based and intermittent fasting too. Great lifestyle for health ! I Skip alot of rope, bodyweight training, medicine balls and only plants.🌱💪 as bruce lee said the athlete training for muscle should be sure to work on speed and flexibility or they will be like a low geared truck chasing a rabbit. Overall fitness and health you just can't beat a meatless animal protein cholesterol free diet to accompany the workouts. Lift heavier more often and add caloroes if you want to grow.Animal protein has no magical ingredients you can't get from plants in a better way.

Inconvenience is a HUGE reason why people quit being plant based. Especially if they travel frequently. However, with planning it can be done quite easily.

It seems like the industry purposely ignores Indians. Punjabis and in particular many Sikhs have many examples of big and strong dudes and they are vegan their whole lives.

Being meat eater, vegetarian or vegan it's a choice and preference of everyone's own. People should understand and be open minded towards it and share knowledge instead of slandering which what happening these days alot.
