As strong and ferocious as MIke was, he was like a humble little child in the presence of Cus DAmato, understanding that with age is wisdom, never be so arrogant as to ignore "learning" you will cheat yourself out of a lifetime of experience. With age, you become wiser & begin to comprehend what Cus was trying to explain to him in his younger years, even after all this time has passed, Mike tears up when reminiscing about his father figure.

Something the younger generations have lost. A wise old man once told me “I have forgotten more than you know”. Take that how you want, but to me that shit run deep. Made me realise to respect an older persons view of something. Everything you know now may be a useless load of bollocks by the time your 40 and actually think like an adult. Life experience is priceless.

@@godnnat hmm...makes me realize something too...the master doesn't like the student to talk back so much and be full of too many words or his own opinions and ideas...it's like if the glass is already full then nothing can be poured in...the student must empty his vessel and trust that the master will give him everything he needs to know which he only needs to apply and he has certain success...I was under the instruction of a master (no need to specify what art form) but as I started to progress greatly from putting into practice what he taught me I spoke out a bit too much in front of people and he didn't like it but did not tell me...he organized a difficultly for me after that (probably to challenge ego) and I didn't pass it and I left in anger...still have his teaching but it requires certain outside setup to be put into effective practice...the thing is if the master is not happy with his student for any reason he can sabotage that student to make them leave...it is how it is...people can be vindictive just under normal circumstances but the master can be very cruel if he chooses to be...anyway if you have a good method which has been taken to it's full extent by the master and you do it over and over several hours a day for months and then years you yourself become the master and have the knowledge to teach a student

@@godnnat yeah sure...perhaps some are more lenient than others but as stated some masters can be cruel...if u are too intelligent or have too much opinion it is actually a downside...one must be humble and quiet and act how the master likes to see u under him which is like a little child...my master had also been a rebel and refused to follow others orders and made his own way after he got the teaching...I revered him but then more people started coming and I thought he was a blabber mouth (didn't tell him or anyone this but maybe he read my mind)...he talked and talked and talked..and then I talked a bit too much and he didn't like it...I gave a different opinion to people than his and I think he took offence and set up something for me after which removed me....u know sometimes it can be people coming in from outside that cause difficulties and misconceptions between master and student...it's complex...we can say "just be as a child and be empty and do what he says"..I could have just stayed away and been ultra private and more diligent with my practice but I just happened to be there with more people showing up asking questions...really addition of people into the mix can fck things up quickly...the bond of master and student must be strong but with too many people around and his focus on too many things then stuff can go sideways...not giving excuses here but many variables involved...if you have the teaching and can do it without being bothered several hours a day you will have success within months and mastery within a few years but lots of tests in that time...lots of ways to fall and be removed from that training environment...I still practice but no where near the 8 hours a day I was doing in the forest on the mountain which is what is required for real breakthru and into mastery...just an hour every morning

Let em know Rich! I've always said Iron Mike is by far the greatest to ever lace up a pair. No other fighter in history comes close to the Cus D'Amato, Kevin Rooney, trained Tyson! He's a grandmaster of hand-to-hand combat. A force of nature. And also a deep thinker. A man of the people. Yes, Ray Robinson can also share the pinnacle, but heavyweight champion is the greatest achievement and prize...

Cus promised Mike Tyson if he did what he said he'd make him champion of the world and then he said he would stay alive till it happened. What is often not understood is this was not the goal. He carried Mike to the mountain top and then left him there to learn what it means to be king of the mountain. This broke Mike again but Cus knew Mike now possessed the ability to rebuild himself and Mike has done so. He may still be falable, as we all are, but Mike Tyson holds knowledge and insight most ppl could only dream of. Cus and Mike truly is a combination of two great life stories combining to make something even greater, a lesson for humanity itself. Their story is one for the generations imho

I was 9 when Mike won the Heavyweight title. Never in my wildest dreams could I imagine the guy on the Punch Out game, who had televised fights, trials and tribulations would be someone who I grew to deeply admire and respect. So much so I listen to every interview I can of him, many as of late bringing me to tears. I’ve seen so much oh this man’s life I almost feel selfish wanting to know about his relationship with Cus D’Amato.

Pisses me off that as smart as I am I didn’t see the lesson Coach Joe and Coach Walton were trying to teach me with all that cardio and running they were making me do instead of actually wrestling. They were trying to teach me discipline and my ego and weak mind back than made me miss it. Discipline is the only thing between me and winning it’s always been me vs me. Took me years to figure it out but better late than never bby 💯 thanks coach Joe

Perfect fit for both people at the right times in their lives. Both would probably had left this earth before their time if they did not cross paths when they did. Instead, they did cross paths and they both created something the boxing world never saw, or probably never will.

Cus has done his part is bringing out the potential in Mike. Unfortunately the late 80s and 90s was an era where athletes are easily misguided due to fame and money. You either learn the easy way or the hard way and mike chose the hard way. Glad he has recovered though

Fear held in back, fear got him to the top of the world the baddest man on the planet, and then it pulled him down into the worst depths within himself. But what brought him back to this humblest man on the planet? Idk. Hard to say, wisdom and through the hard realizations that those depths created. Maybe? Or the toad.(same thing hah)

You make a good point about athletes in the 80s and 90s. I’d think if Mike was brought up today he’d wouldn’t have been so misled. Athletes seem a lot more business savvy, and more empowered to take care of themselves mentally and avoid the pitfalls of fame.

A parent is rightfully worried that their child might fall when learning to ride a bike, but not more than they know that they will get it even if they did fall. Cus said he wouldn't leave until Mike made it and, although we would've loved to see him around more - Tyson especially, he did not pass on only until Mike had become the roaring blaze he'd been tending to since he was a boy. "I believe that a person dies when they no longer wants to live, but I have a reason with Mike here.....and I WILL stay alive and I WILL watch him become a success." They needed each other and ended up helping a whole lot more people than one another. Such a special bond story they have. RIP Coach
