Begonia Propagation | How to Root Cuttings of Begonia and Grow them Through the Winter. Finally got around to taking begonia cuttings. We started with propagation and how I root the stem cuttings of these begonias and end with showing you how to grow them indoors through the winter with the new LED light from Sansi. Begonia cutting propagation from stem cuttings can take some time but it's worth it in the end.

Mike i have been rooting the angel wing begonias for the last 15 years. My 87 year old father received one in 1982 at the passing of his father. He loved the wings and began rooting it and sharing the plant with neighbors friends and and family. I do the same and it is a joy. That same plant has been rooted and shared hundreds of times between me and daddy. The flowers are just beautiful. Daddy says that his cup runneth over when he shares his wings. Try this plant you'll love it. Love you plant with your girls!

Because of your video,s i now watch and have for some time ,, i was inspired to take some rose cuttings from a bush i have, thats about 6 years old, i origanally bought from the aldi store, its a rose with yellow flowers and pink teardrop spots on the petals , anyway i took the cuttings back in early august, and put them in old compost in an 8 inch pot in the greenhouse, i took 8 cuttings and used rooting powder, i watered them once and left them, today i checked them and to my suprise they have all taken and the roots are coming out the bottom of the pot, i couldnt believe it ,its the first time i have ever taken cuttings from a rose bush im really over the moon at my sucsess, thanks to you ..happy gardening..

I've heard begonias can also be propagated from a single leaf stem. I haven't try to grow begonias or buy them because I thought they cannot survive through winter. I have a wild begonia type in my garden, which is self-propagating from its seeds. The flower is light pink and small, but the plant grows fast and tall, but it dies every winter. It is nice to have your children participating in the work. They can learn the skills and stay away from computer games.

75% success with begonias is good. Last winter, as the calendar approached the spring equinox I was forced to trim 30 begonias in the greenhouse. The trimmings produces 175 propagation starts. Generally I am happy with 50% success with my begonias. I am puzzled that some rooted within weeks, some months, and others not at all. I was pleased to see success with the SANSI LED lights, I have purchased several of that model and look forward to using them for propagation, I wasn't sure about it being a good move - you have proven it will be. (maybe I should grow some gegonias and some beraniums? Just being snarky)

I like begonias. Hmmmm. LOL Mike I have seen nothing in any of your videos I've watched so far - that I don't like. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos. All of them, from 0ver 6 years and farther back to those more recent ones 2024. OH... I cut some tops off my sweet potato vines I bought around June. I stuck them in some water a few days ago. Left them outside. I noticed I had let sun get on them - they looked a bit "stressed". I took them over to my RV - sat them by my back window that faces East - added a bit more water - raised them out of water and darned if they didn't have roots! Already! Oh my goodness. Wow! I also stuck some mint tips in water, and they are looking ok too. I will continue watching!!! Oh yeah. I have to try to find something to use to pot them in (the soil) I guess maybe half potting soil and half pearlite? Would that work. I have several small plastic pots some of my plants came in! I like Chobani too - any flavor! Can we overwinter them once we pot them? You just answered my question. :-) Wow is right! Well I need lights now too. Those three are great. Wow. I will spend this fall getting things ready for next spring. Yup. But I am going to work on keeping my sweet potato vines going - and my mint! :-)

@bobbrawley2612
@bobbrawley2612 4 жыл бұрын
Theorize to me that a thumbs down on a video is more worser than a thumbs up. I will theorize to you that a thumbs down shows participation by the audience. Thumbs down may be construed by the video 's host as an insult but it does not diminish the standing to the KZfaq algorithm. I have even heard/read a similar proposal by other video makers that such KZfaq algorithm considerations are made See you and I are Mike Kincaid fans. We can tolerate more " not getting to the point " for those passing through , looking for the right video to answer their question jibber jabber about the flavor of a seedling cup is not welcoming. And thus a thumbs down is appropriate for viewers in a hurry
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 4 жыл бұрын
Well said, Bob! I don't mind the thumbs down, just thought I'd add a little humor to it in this video. I also don't take it as an insult. I learn from it. If I have a video that gets a lot of negative feedback then I try to figure out what I can do better and adjust. It's all constructive criticism to me. I don't even mind the negative comments, I just don't engage them. Occasionally I'll get a really nasty comment that is completely inappropriate and in those cases I just block the person. I take it all in stride.

So, if i cut a bunch of leaves with their stems off the parent plant and place the stems in water, they will root? How long before they root would you say, should i keep them shaded and inside or outside? Thank You
@AndeeKiss
@AndeeKiss 3 жыл бұрын
@@DAM89 I cut off the lower leaves leaving only a few. And if they are big I cut them into half the size, it reduces the amount of energy that the leaves would take from the cutting, so it can focus on growing roots. I keep them inside in a bright place with no direct sunlight. Rooting time depends also on the type of plant - some of them roots faster (few weeks' time), some of them slower (a month or two).

I use 50% sand/compost as they root much quicker I found as the new roots love sand as it's easier to penetrate than compost material on its own as there is a lot of fibre to push through and it takes the cuttings a very long time to do anything. It also saves on compost.

I think children learn from their parents by osmosis. Often described as genetics but it's not genetic its learning from their parents without it being instructed. And yet when they become mid teens they blossom into skill that their parents had practiced less expertly. I have seen this phenomenon in the context of mechanical ability. Musical instrument playing and in sports . Here in your video you actually instruct your girls . Plus osmosis they will far exceed you in plant probagation careers if they chose that vocation or advocation

^^ There's at least one person who does NOT like vanilla yogurt!! hahaha Your videos are always inspiring for me. I love your enthusiasm for growing things. I have a Begonia on my back porch. I bought the tuber years ago, planted it outdoors, dug it up at the end of the season and stored it in a paper bag in the basement. Completely forgot about it for at least a year. That tuber sat in the dark all that time but it had little sprouts when I discovered it. I potted it. It was making a comeback when my cat knocked against it completely breaking off the stem at the soil line. It spent the summer on my porch , made a terrific comeback (again!) and wouldn't you know a windstorm came about a week ago and blew it over? It's kind of cock-eyed now but still hanging on :) The Little Begonia That Could.

Another Nice Informative video!! Great Job!!! But at like 14:20 or so you said you mixed up some plant fertalizer and watered them. Plant fertalizer, I believe doesn't feed the Mycorrhizae. You spent a nice chunk of change on the Pro-Mix with Mycorrhizae but didn't utilize the Mycorrhizae. In short you should have added some simple sugars to your Fertalizer like brewers corn sugar or Molasses to feed the Mycorrhizae. The whole point is to feed the Microbes in the dirt and they feed your plants. There is a book called Teaming With Microbes, I forget who wrote it but it might save you alot of money on fertalizer. Once again nice job on the video!!!!

Thanks, John, I have the book and love it. The potting soil has no nutrients at all and must be supplemented in some way or the plants would suffer. Outdoors, I mulch and let nature take its course.

I prepare for spring in the fall. So much to remember from the many KZfaq lessons. I always forget something . It's like I look forward to the next season and yet dread the future at the same time . I should of planted a cover crop in July or August. Not in Sept. When is the season that Japanese maples shed their seeds . I got to plan months in advance When do sellers sale scion wood. I have been waiting since last April but will probably miss.aquiring any this November Is it too late to begin airlayer in Oct. Why didnt I start two or 3 months ago. This Sept I have developed several compost piles for spring distribution . But by spring j might only have mulch How do I preserve summer greens or store fall browns to create compost next summer. Should I buy red wigglers now in the fall or should I waite till spring. If I waite till spring that will delay my compost 6 months. I just cant seem to get on schedule so I'm not looking for spring right away . I got to get my head together . And a 5 month break is a relief

It looks as though the one that didn't make it was also the only one that had a small flower bud. I wonder if you had emoved that flower bud, perhaps that plant would have survived...more energy for rooting development, etc... Amazing.

Possibly. It was doing well for awhile and then decided to rot. I suppose the flower bud could be the cause.

Hey Mr. Mike, well i couldn't see the video of light that we saw it now because i was sick, but of course i'm gonna see it, now about this video it's really amazing because every single thing in it is wonderful, and like someone said (i think his name is Brent and if i'm wrong, sorry buddy) in the comments that you're teaching your adorable daughters and letting them work with you, and that shows that you love them too much "from me your an incredible father, GOD bless them both and GOD bless you either of course " yeah to continue ,love them too much (other than because you're there father, i'm talking spiritually here) because i know what the plant means to its owner, never ever let someone else even touch them (as for me I swear to GOD that every single time i let someone see a plant of mine, it dies next day) now the last thing because i turned this comment into a newspaper 😂😂, first what happened with your pinky finger?, second also what happened with the aquarium and the fishes? ,and lastly, i'm 28 years old so what do you prefer calling you Mr. Mike or just Mike?, may you have a wonderful day.

Off topic of course. Second experience to verify your contention that low moisture is the secret to vigorous root growth I purchased two Turkey fig single trunk trees in April. They were horribly root bound in a 3 gallon pot . I planted them in ground dug a bigger hole in horrible subsoil dirt with good soil in the hole. In early October 5 tons of dirt were dumped on the two fig trees. The fig tree I dug out . Very little water was given to the tree during the summer with well below average rainfall. When I got to the roots the roots had grown into the very dry soil . Mostly rotten shale . The roots had grown into shale rock and throughout the very dry soil. . I was very impressed by the one season root growth into the soil beyond the dug hole . It seems I had great sucess by not disturbing the tight circled riot bound root ball. The other tree I unboundthe roots in a determined way and it showed the harm i did. After digging the 2ed tree up the roots were 1/3 of the original . They never grew into the subsoil like the 1st tree . Also I would like to report that that people were winning bids on the figbid site for Black Medria kk from $150 to $225. For rooted and potted airlayer. There is your $6000 Dollars. Un believable!. Really but true.
