Mikko Teeth are RUINED because of Thumb Sucking!!

Mikko uses her thumb as a stim, to self soothe when she is having a difficult time or when anxiety arises. This has been something she's done since she was 6 months old. Although we've tried to explain and show her the detriment, she does not have the capabilities of understanding. Thumb sucking is normal to a lot of children neurotypical or neurodivergent. We are working to help her find other soothing mechanisms, until doctors can do more.
What are some stims healthy or not healthy that your kiddos do?

yessss!!!! it's even more important than brushing (not saying brushing is bad, y'all, clean your teeth!) I keep a bag of flossies, in sight, on my desk to remind myself to do it more often :) I even stim with them sometimes, though I have to pay attention to not overdo it and bruise my gums. Also, I was a finger sucker (pinky, not thumb) until I was about 13 or 14. I had to get braces early on and it really helped mitigate the damage I was doing to myself. My overbite has long been corrected but my pinky is still curved and, honestly, it looks kinda cute :))

One reason why many dentists don't do much about these type of cases before the age of 7 is because they by 7, the primary recommendation becomes braces. Braces are expensive. And the concerned parent no longer has a choice. I worked as a dental assistant for two years and it was the worst two years of my life. Anyway, if you can stop the thumb sucking before the age of four, the damage won't be as bad as it would be if you wait for a dentist to finally "see" the problem. There are thumb sucking guards to reduce the amount of time she spends sucking her thumb. They come in different types and you can wear it on her at night too.

Just saw a couple of your videos - I had a child care business in my home for over 12 years. I taught all little ones baby sign language before their first birthdays. Most parents were skeptical until they saw their child sign for the first time. Then they were fully on board. I explained it was simply a bridge from the time before speech until they could say words. It was incredibly helpful in decreasing frustration on the parents ' part as well as the child's. I caught a part of one of your videos - apparently your daughter understands much of what you tell her, just as babies do. They just haven't developed the skills necessary for speech. Have you tried baby sign language with her? It's definitely an easy thing to do and she doesn't have to spell anything! The library will either have books or you can request they order them. Amazon offers many for sale as well. Your clarity with your daughter is awe inspiring.❤️

Baby girl Mikko is so sweet. She is very curious and shows amazing signs of intelligence. The doll that she was playing with while you (Precious) helps her with her hair is a great idea. Teeth are almost always in a state of flux...they move slightly in all of us. Of course eventual elimination of thumb sucking is the goal to avoid a severe overbite. I used to suck my thumb a lot as a kid and ended up with a gap between my teeth. My mum used make me and my siblings use 'Dip and twist' I'm not sure if they have it in the states or something similar, but it stopped me from sucking my thumb and the gap between my teeth is now gone. It's a tub with a sponge soaked in a bitter liquid that you dip your thumb in, so that whenever you try to suck your thumb, it tastes really bad and you develop and aversion to sucking your thumb. Hope this helps and I really love your videos! 😊

If she is still sucking her thumb when her adult teeth come in there is a mouth appliance that the dentist can put in her mouth and she can’t take it out until you’re ready. It doesn’t hurt she just won’t be able to get a suction around her thumb.

Nobody in my family is a thumb sucker; we have skin and nail pickers and constant hair brushers lol. As for sucking thumbs idc if the baby was 2 weeks or two months, I'd snatch that thumb out their mouths so quick. Mikko throws a fit alot, but mom its your home. Reward her for not sucking her thumb with a small gummy treat or a new book and be very firm with her when she does put her in timeout. She'll eventually get it best of luck!!

Wow ur so amazing and miko is adorable. My daughter and i haved been working with children with autism for total of 70 yrs. My daughter is 42 and has been in the field for 25yrs and before i retired (10yrs ago) i was working for a little over 40yrs. I worked in elementary schools as the person responsible of all the shadows and all the students with special needs. My daughter started working at private organizations going into the homes who have children from severe to mild autism aswell as from non verbal to verbal but almost all her kiddies were extremely aggressive. She would do kinda what ur doing with your daughter. I just want to say how wonderfully calm and loving and patient u are. I have watched a couple videos and I love to see Miko's progress. In terms of the toothbrush, I have found on Amazon special toothbrushes for kids with autism and sensory processing disorders where the bristles are soft but are formed to brush all sides of each tooth. As someone who would normally not need that , I find the toothbrush is amazing. As u go along each tooth it brushes the outside of the tooth as well as the other side . It's hard to explain lol but I bought a 2 pkg for 10$ Canadian. Maybe that would help. ❤

I sucked my thumb till I was, like, 7. As I’m typing this I’m realizing it might have something to do with having ADHD. I was probably stimming. I’ve always stimmed most of the time. The main thing I do is make rhythms and beats with my teeth. It’s not good, I know it’s probably wearing them down slowly. It’s almost impossible to stop. I do it without thinking. I have other destructive stims like picking at my skin and lips. I wasn’t diagnosed till I was an adult in college. Still learning everyday about what it means for me and how to explains me. It’s crazy how so many parts of me are linked to it. Things I never would’ve thought.

These life experiences can be so unique and the path each choses should be treated as such. My own experience with my middle daughter went like this: Sensory disorder need was to suck her thumb. It wasn't until she was mid teens until I went ahead with having her mouth and teeth fixed. She did have speech therapy for many years when she was young but passed even with her teeth and palate not corrected. Once she was mature enough and able to handle everything needing to be done to correct the teeth and palate...then we moved forward with it. She never tolerated any other efforts when she was younger. It exasperated her anxiety and threw her into fits. It didn't help that when she was 8.5 years she was hit by a car (mirror hit back and ran over foot in a hit and run)...that caused her incredible anxiety disorder. Once they corrected her palate they were able to straighten her teeth. She has never had a cavity. I hope this makes sense. It is a bit out of order but hoping it gets some of the main points shared. Best wishes.

I will suggest when Mikko fall asleep, wrap either the whole hand or just the thumb. When she automatically puts in in her mouth, she hopefully will not bother and go back to sleep. Her inside mouth is shaped like her thumb, but her inside mouth can shape back if she stops for a day or two and the thumb will not comfort the same. Good Luck.....if you don't mind crying...I would wrap her hand with a glove for a week...thick on the thumb part.

My son fell in love with brushing his teeth when I bought him an electric brush with a rotating part - the speech therapist advised us to brush not only our teeth, but also our tongue in order to stimulate sensitivity and, as a result, improve speech.

My 10 year old grandchild is autistic and has lately started to regress. My daughter is having a hard time with her increased stemming and dietary needs. She also had to ween her off her tablet which became an addictive calming tool because she was mimicking things she saw on the internet. I pray for her and my daughter's well being everyday and my hat goes off to anyone dealing with an autistic child.

To be honest, house like a child around 3 years old I have been doing that for a very long time and now that I want to go see a dentist I start to analyze the problem if I keep on continuing it and why I should stop. But now I'm over here with braces. I wish you guys well 💕

Mikko is a little foodie 😂❤. She seems to have a great appetite. I'm 36 but I sucked my thumb until I was about 8-10 because I got tired of ppl picking on me. I just went cold turkey. No major issues other than gaps and not being able to pronounce a few things . Needless to say I ended up with braces but my Dad got tired of taking me to the orthodontist so I never wore my retainer 😂. ❤

Well, I'm guilty. I still suck my thumb. My third daughter picked up my bad habit but. The dentist said because of baby teeth not much to Worry about.... Growing up they tried everything to stop me from sucking my thumb.I even went through having braces.Which actually made my teeth worse.... But I only suck my. Thumb at night to help me sleep.... My daughter also has a blanket to go with her thumb. The way I used to.... Don't know what happened to the blanket I had... God bless you and your family. Your resilience, time and patience is astounding. In a few weeks They will be testing my daughter for Autism.... My emotions are mixed but I have a heavy heart... Guilt and blame on me...

I feel you on this one with the teeth situation. Our son is on the spectrum he had a dummy until he was 5 he used it as part of his oral stimming..we decided enough was enough and replaced them with a chew buddy.he didn't take to them at first, but after 3 weeks he was chewing and using it alot more. Now after 6 months we have seen a big improvement on his teeth gapping, and they aren't as pushed forward anymore.bur he still struggles with saying certain sounds, mainly sp, sc, get replaced with b , every child is unique but maybe try different shaped chewy toys and necklace maybe she will take to one.x

Sis, I sucked my thumb well into grade school. I had to wear braces but I'm fine now. Edited to add: For me it was a comfort thing. To this day, I tuck my thumbs in my fists when I'm stressed. No clue why, but I do. If you give her something to chew she may do better.

I sucked my thumb until i was 13. Dont remember having problems with eating or speech. My adult teeth are fine. Also there is something on the market that you can use to stop her from sucking her thumb. However, she may stop on her own once she feels secure. ❤

Perhaps a "fixed habit breaker" can be made-called a "rake" that is glue in place will work .orthodontist usually take molds, place bands in mold for fixed appliance to made in ortho lab and then returned for cementation. Only a thought-she wont be able to insert her thumb for that sucking seal..a few sleepness nights 4 u but, worn anywhere from weeks to a year to break habit and retrain the brain, tongue, lips, and muscles. Not expensive either.😊

I had an open bite because I sucked my thumb forever. I got braces when I was 33 to fix my bite. It was hard to take bites of food in the front.

Has the Dentist recommended a TGuard to help with the thumb sucking? I was just talking to my niece last week about this because both her and her husband are trying to get their son who is 5 to stop sucking his thumb. He just went to the dentist a few days ago and they pulled his two front teeth so maybe he will stop now..

As she becomes older she will stop on her own. As long as she has no teeth decay is the most you need to worry about concerning her teeth.

I wonder if the nail biting/ thumb sucking deterrent polish would work for her? It has a terrible bitter flavor that most kids don't like, If she won't allow you to polish her nail, perhaps you could do it while she sleeps. It would only take a few seconds to her thumb nails.

My daughter has the same bite as Mikko. She might grow out of thumb sucking because my daughter is 10 and still sometimes socks her thumb. Do keep in mind baby teeth are not forever. If she still has the open bite when she's older, braces will fix it.

She’s so cute biting on that apple😅 my very high functioning autistic son is 20 now and he eats fine, but he still has a hard time biting with his front teeth. He eats small pieces of food by putting them in his mouth and chewing with his side and back teeth. It’s not an issue and it doesn’t look different or anything. His teeth are fine too. I worked with him like this for years but with his sensory overload in his mouth he just prefers not to bite with his front teeth. So I decided to help him with more important things he needed to learn. She doing good though, it looks like she’s tolerating the bite down pretty well. You’re doing great mom❤❤❤
