Mikrotik recently released the cAP XL AC which is basicly an updated version of the cAP AC but with a supposedly stronger antenna for better range. Though as I found the range was actually not as good at least with my iPhone and that's a fairly standard device people will use wirelessly.
Reminds me of the old AC-LR and AC-Lite from Ubiquiti how no one ever gave a solid yes/no on the improved range. Likely because its not that improved like in this case. Think it requires a stronger antenna on the client side too which makes it useless for home environments.
Bit of a disappointment. It also lacks support for wifiwave2 so it's kinda a dead product on launch but the old cAP AC is a very cheap yet powerful AP for the price if you want to go Mikrotik.
CAPsMAN is really cool too for central management and thats what these cAP devices are designed for. I will be doing a future video on setting up CAPsMAN

The TX power is capped by regulations, hence the RSSI is presumably roughly the same. The XL has "larger ears" and can hear your signal from farther away. This should yield better transfer rates, especially in the uplink, but also when downloading (because ACK packages are sent via uplink during downloads), and it should be easier to establish a connection as fewer packets get dropped, especially if your mobile device also has a large/good antenna.

Great review, Could it be the rating of the Poe injector for the cap xl?

Doubt it as in all my tests for AP's was tested on a 48v 802.3af compliant switch (a Cisco and a HP)

@@bluntlab The CAP AC XL is not just 802.3af. According to its product page it’s capable of using 802.3at (“PoE+”). If you only used af switches, Mark may be correct, you might not have been feeding the CAP AC XL with enough power. I would recommend redoing the tests using the included PoE injector, or an at-capable switch

@bluntlab 2 жыл бұрын
@@QuadMoePiece I see your POV but Mikrotik claim that it uses no more than 11w with nothing attached (to the passthrough port I assume) so the 15.4w of 802.3af should of been plenty. And anyway the power draw on the XL should be lower with the higher gain antenna anyway as it shouldn't need more power. I want to retest these when the weather is not so wet/cold and hopefully with ROS7 instead as I have not ruled out a software issue with the cAP XL as its not identified as a cAP XL in the software and rather just by its board name so maybe RouterOS is not tuned for the XL varient when I did my tests

@@bluntlab Fair point. I did not notice it was rated to pull only 11W without the passthrough port in use.

@@bluntlab Some of Cisco's APs will behave differently if connected to AF instead of AT. A 4x4 becomes a 2x2. Unless Microtik specifies this, then I doubt it is your issue. As others have mentioned, there may a country setting, other parameter, or software bug that you are dealing with. I am sure the hardware should perform better given the higher gain antenna.

It's a pitty you didn't dive into the radio configuration setting of both after this odd observation. How about a "re-cAP" video? I wouldn't be surprised if the antenna gain was not 100% by default. Nevertheless, 👍 for the effort!

@BluntLab I think they messed-up antena gain on software as usual, depends on country selected, try setting it to "superchanel" and "united states capac" for country which should unlock full power than try test range again and report back.

I like that you have both and tested it but you definitely need to rework your methodology. The glaring problems are that they were running at the same time next to one another and there's no clear indication what the wireless configuration was, which dictates all the properties of the wireless performance within reason. I would like to see them go tit for tat.

I only had one powered up at a time just mounted on the same ceiling indoors. The outdoor range tests was literally a single one at a time I didnt really get good footage I know. the configs are virtually default except for the country setting which was set to UK for both as thats where I am from I want to revisit this when its not freezing cold outside. With a newer RouterOS I think the XL shipped with a release that was not optimised for it being a new product. think the antenna gains got incorrectly set or something?

The test methodology is flawed. Setting could make a major difference, (e.g. antenna gain) One of the routers might be unlucky and experience more interference at the respective band. All in all, "same hardware, but bigger, higher sensitivity antennas, yet performs worse" makes zero sense.

Both AP's used the same channels and was in the same location for both my tests. I am planning to retest this when the weather is warmer and do it more fair. I also used an out of the box config just with different SSIDs and manual channels that was free at the time. I think the issue is in the UK the radio power is limited with the higher gain antenna. so the cAP AC gives out a stronger signal. the smaller antenna is more like the ones in iPhones etc. I have deployed both of them in my home network now and the XL does not seem any different from the AC I bet if I could configure both radios to use the exact same power it would be an easy win for the XL but sadly I have not observed a real benefit with regular devces. Granted it might perform better with certain industrial devices with high gain antennas also. Considering the price difference and the lower power due to the larger antennas in most countries I think its better to just buy two cAP AC's. and IMO the cAP AC's are more nicer looking. the XL looks really bulky and not very nice. TLDR: Testing was the best I could do in my limited time. Have not observed any benefits since deploying them. Probably because of the radio power limits on the XL. the cAP AC looks nicer and makes more sense to buy two of them instead for even better range than a single XL

Sucks as the hardware is capable of wave 2 its just RouterOS that cant yet. ROS7 can do wifiwave2 but not on these models due to flash size. Hopefully they can make a smaller package. Does boggle the mind though. Why sell the XL with small flash sizes too

@@bluntlab When i read about it i was thinking finally a new AP (cAP AC XL) with wave2, better speed e better antenna... and then no.. not event more speed like 450mb on 2.5ghz and 1733 on 5ghz (this are the speed of my new home router from my isp... and it's very good also this type of devices are around, search for other modem/router combo or simple ap...) why Mikrotik don't have any of that?

I decided to stick with ac. Xl looks really weird, awfully designed. And I heard from other places that WiFi range is worse with xl. And it’s a little bit more expensive. So just ac is what works great for me.
