4:24 - Facial hair causing imperfect seals in masks led to the decline of facial hair in militaries in WW1. Before then, soldiers were generally *required* to grow a moustache if they were able to. But when gas masks became necessary due to chemical warfare, a clean-shaven face was needed to maximize the effectiveness of the seals.

If relatively more black people got covid it is not necessarily the result of systemic racism. It's also possible that black people behave differently and in a way that makes them more susceptible for catching the virus. To me that is coherent with observations as I saw more black people not caring about the pandemic rules than white ones. Why is it so difficult for many people to look at alternatives if racism is a solution. At least science and justice should be free from that kind of prejudice.
@ryanbananahands7545
@ryanbananahands7545 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question, and your point about black people behaving differently in a way that makes them more susceptible is essentially why they are catching the virus. However, instead of looking at factors that might contribute to this, you turn to anecdotal evidence and dismiss the claim, stating that science and justice should be free from prejudice - without providing any sort of citation or evidence to back up your claim in a scientific way. Essentially this is an economic problem. There is a significant wage gap based on race in the US, this is well documented (scientifically) and can be seen on this government website. www.federalreserve.gov/econres/notes/feds-notes/disparities-in-wealth-by-race-and-ethnicity-in-the-2019-survey-of-consumer-finances-20200928.htm Lower paying jobs tend to be more public facing, think grocery store workers, retail, fast food, nursing. These jobs make it difficult to be covid safe. Additionally, low cost housing makes it difficult to physical distance. If you are living with a large family or a bunch of room mates the odds of exposure you are greater. The reason that people state that these covid deaths are a result of systemic racism is because of the reasons behind the massive wealth gap between black and white people. America has well documented racism; just over 60 years ago America was still a segregated country. Say we imagine (hypothetically) that all racism stopped in the 60's (his is not the case but I'm going to use it for simplicity and my argument here) we would still be seeing the effects of systemic racism today. Good jobs take financial investment, generational wealth takes time to accumulate, property is expensive to buy, black people would still be at a disadvantage, they would still be in lower paying jobs compared to white people and they would still be at a higher risk of Covid. Based on your comments and attitudes I'm assuming you have a complicated relationship with the BLM movement, it being not altogether positive. Regardless of your attitudes, unless you chose to altogether deny American history, and the large economic gap that exists between black and white people, it is impossible to characterize the massive disparity between black and white Covid deaths as anything but racist.

@@davidchang5265 It's racist because saying that black people act differently isn't an alternative to systemic racism. Rather, systemic racism is an explanation for WHY they act differently, so by presenting them acting differently as an alternative to systemic racism, they're actually denying that the difference is a product of environment; what the OP is really promoting is the idea that black people are acting differently because they're inherently a different sort of people than white Americans. It's a "biological racism" argument, just without saying it outright.

Well, one way is to take an insulator, melt it, put some dipolar molecules in it, then solidify it in a strong electric field, causing the now secured dipolar molecules to generate their own electric field. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electret For n95 masks, after filtering material is melt blown, it is bombarded by electrons from a corona discharge mechanism. www.lisungroup.com/products/mask-produce-and-test-machine/meltblown-cloth-electrostatic-electret-generator.html However, this charge can dissipates over time. Another way is to bombard an insulator with electrons, causing them to get caught inside the insulator, which gives it a fairly permanent electric charge. For fun, some people bombard acrylic plastic with 5 million volt electron beam to near the dielectric breakdown, then ground the ~2 million volt electret acrylic plastic, causing neat lighting tunnels : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtKqfLh83qeVlYU.html

The mass death by covid is a result of the subordination of human life to corporate profit. Racialist politics has no explanation for the death occuring at a global scale. Working class people of all race, ethnicity, gender and nationality are dying on a mass scale. Stoping the pandemic and preventing future ones is not a question of identity but of political economy. Ending an economic system which values profit more than human life is the essential task.

I'm wondering if there are models that charge a filter and cycle air through to trap the particles. One issue with charging fabric or a filter as it is made is that the charge will eventually dissipate, so effectiveness is lost even if it is not in use and just in storage.

Regarding the initial opening statement I believe a part of those differences might be correlated with vitamin d deficiencies of the overall black community. Their socioeconomic backgrounds and lifestyles might entail low to none sunlight exposition (plus their diet also lack proper vit d ingestion). This is fundamental considering the fact that people with darker skins have, in general, lower production rates from sunlight (compared to lighter skin colors) and thus actually need more exposition to balance this out. For what I understand Vit D is closely related in helping prevent respiratory deseases plus there's already some strong correlation with current covid deaths and sunlight exposition. I'm unaware about the general education in the US, but if you're black and/or have friends under this conditions suggest them taking some complements (no more than the daily recommended estimates). Plus this will definitely help them in the long run as some most probably they are already getting sick quite regularly due to this. Even if you're not black and you're lifestyle involves not being exposed to sunlight or while doing so you're mostly covered (or for example nursing homes), your diet isn't as good, do consider taking vitaming d complements. Of course with this I don't want to downplay any racial inequalities the US has with the black community, and any other minority! PS: Considering the influence and exposition your channel has you might want to do some research of this and cover this subject.

Looking at the data, it seems Black/Hispanic have higher rates of infection generally, with roughly the same trends between races across non-hospitalized/non-fatal/fatal cases. So it would seem the outcomes after infection are approximately equal (likelihood of an individual case proving fatal), but the infection rate (and therefore total case number) shows a clear disparity. This would indicate that quality of care is likely nearly equal between races or insignificant to determining outcome. Transmission within communities seems a likely culprit for infection rate disparity. I would venture a guess that higher population densities in Urban environments are at least a part of the equation.

It's actually well documented that groups like black americans have higher mortality rates than say white americans, form all sorts of diseases. The difference is mainly attributed to lower incomes and lack of opportunity because of (historical or present) systemic racism. It is then not unscientific to assume a similar pattern would be present for COVID-19.

Phoe Nix I do not dispute the higher mortality rates, that data has been documented. It is the cause of those higher mortality rates that has not been verified with data. “Has been attributed to” is not the same as “has been demonstrated to be caused by” with citations to validated data. There may be a large number of underlying influences that contribute to the end result of higher mortality, disease, and impact of Covid. I do not presuppose the answer or deny the possibility that the hypotheses are correct. But until proven they remain hypotheses, not fact

I am fully aware that I am probably going to catch a lot of flak for this, but I think it needs to be said... The exert at the beginning of the video is extremely misleading. Hang in with me here.. It DOES show that the number of COVID-19 deaths among black Americans is disproportionate to the population size, but it assumes the discrepancy is caused by systemic racial inequalities. Furthermore, it appears to be implying that these racial inequalities is deliberate and malicious. Now, if that is true, the use of the correlation implies causation fallacy discredits the main point of displaying such statistics and is harmful to the cause of racial equality. However, if the aforementioned inequalities is not deliberate, then displaying such statistics just distracts the public to other potential issues that could be at play. Again, THERE IS A DISCREPANCY. If it is deliberate, provide proof. If it is not deliberate, find the real cause of the discrepancy. Either way, don't use misleading statistics.

I'm confused about footnote #2 on intro card. That paper doesn't use the word "systemic" at all. In fact, it says, "It is certainly important to conduct the high-quality research necessary to understand the factors responsible for observed increases in racial inequalities..." then lists mistrust as one possible factor (due to the Tuskeegee experiments). Although Tuskeegee was an example of racist policy IMO, it is not claimed in this article that it is definitely a factor, let alone define it as systemic racism.

The data on covid affecting different ethnic groups differently is pretty solid - as is the data showing more deaths among men, people of some blood types, people with hypertension, people with obesity, and people who don’t follow protocols. However, the commentary that concludes this is caused by racism, is not science. It’s politics and should not be conflated with science. I’m not saying people aren’t entitled to their political opinions, but it’s intellectually dishonest to bend sciecne for rhetoric and it runs counter to everything that science represents. That’s why it’s disturbing to see that opener on an otherwise pretty good explainer. It’s a practice that has grown to be the rule rather than the exception among people of all political leanings, and it’s part of the destructive cycle of hyperbolic rhetoric and hate that dominates our social discourse.

I read the citations in the opening slide. Racial disparities in health outcomes do not necessarily imply systemic racism. Endogenous factors play an increasingly major role in the cascade leading to poverty, poor healthcare access etc. Predictors of negative developmental and socioeconomic outcomes have spiked after the US made great strides in helping minorities succeed. All of this used to be healthy points of discussion; even Obama spoke about it. But now the narrative has zoned in on systemic racism as the one and only acceptable conclusion. Great video otherwise!

Meta-analysis indicated statistically significant superiority of N95 respirators over medical masks against laboratory-confirmed upper respiratory tract bacterial colonization (BRI) (RR = 0.46; 95% CI: 0.34-0.62) but not laboratory-confirmed influenza (RR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.36-1.99) or other viral infections." masks should work on paper, but in every single RCT of masks (including N95) they just don't stop viruses.

Your opening statement is ideological and antiscientific. Vitamin D deficiency is an important exacerbating factor in pulmonary (and other) infections and a modulator of immune response. Humans make vitamin D in the skin when exposed to sunlight but sunlight in the northern hemisphere is much weaker than tropical sunlight and the melanin of darker skin which protects skin cells from ultraviolet also absorb the ultraviolet that creates vitamin D. Most people outside of the tropics are somewhat vitamin D deficient especially in winter but dark skinned people are particularly deficient. By ignoring biological explanations in favour of social ones, medical science is failing to provide a cheap and effective protective measure and condemning black people to higher mortality out of misplaced political timidity. Stop this modern Lysenkoism. It kills.

@@kindlin Evidence is getting stronger that vitamin D deficiency is a major factor in mortality and that it disproportionately effects people with darker skin as their skin foes not make as much D for a given amount of sunlight. By ignoring this (which has been know for months) many dark skinned people have needlessly died for lack of an intervention that is practically free. The social theory of outcomes has been killing people in the group it claims to care about. It's time to throw out the dangerous pseudo science.

@@fluffymcdeath What are you really going on here? Some random YT video you clicked around and found? Now, even if there was some weird, previously unaccounted for vitamin deficiency plaguing a significant subset of the population, what does that have to do with wearing masks? Vitamin D mainly helps with bone growth and some other misc things, nothing special about the 'rona. And literally everything does something to your immune system, so you can't just start changing social norms because of some perceived correlation between vitamin D and the 'rona. Try this official meta analysis: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3894250/ I'll quote the most important part of the conclusion for you: _The cardinal reason for providing vitamin D supplementation is to ensure bone health. But existing data in African-Americans and Africans do not support that bone health is compromised or even influenced by low vitamin D levels. Furthermore a convincing role for low vitamin D in the development of diabetes, hypertension or adverse cardiovascular health in people of African descent is not supported by existing data._ The next sentences, also very interesting, if I haven't already lost you: _In addition analyses of the WHI and the African-American Diabetes Study data raise the possibility that vitamin D supplementation could have adverse effects on bone, blood pressure and atherosclerotic disease in the aorta and carotid arteries. In short, even though people of African descent have vitamin D levels which are below the established norms of other populations, people of African descent do not appear to be vitamin D deficient._

Can you ever actually say with total conviction that systemic racism played no part in this? What even is systemic racism? Does it really exist? God is everywhere, and so is systemic racism? Is there somewhere where God isn't? Is there somewhere where systemic racism isn't? A scientist wouldn't just assume God if the reason was initially elusive, and assuming systemic racism is just as much of a nonanswer. This kind of reasoning actually impedes science. It is anti-science. It pains my very soul to see this specious reasoning on a science channel.

The opening title of this video feels to me like extracting a simple conclusion out of such a complicated problem. To full address this you would need to go deeper into why they are more likely to die and if this reason is a result of a racist system that intentionally keeps them there and if so what are the solutions. Also all the sources you cited simply showed statistics and didn’t mention that it’s because of institutional racism. I think an independent video on the topic would be better than this but the thing is a lot is still unknown as to why and investigations about it are currently happening. I’m not saying it’s false it’s just a complex problem.

I agree it is a complex problem, but it's been proven that for other illnesses, it holds true. Black americans die of other illnesses at a higher rate than white americans because of (historical or present) systemic racism. Correlation vs Causation is super important to note as well. Just because black people are disproportionately affected by COVID doesn't mean it's because of racism. It's been proven that for other reasons, like African American tendency to be vitamin D deficient, culture, socioeconomic status, living location, etc. that they are affected more by covid than other races. And going back to socioeconomic status, it's not just black people, it's POOR people that are affected by covid, as they don't have the luxury to be safe.

Thanks, I learnt something. One thing not covered much that I would of dug is the amount of restriction on the air passing through. It must be a big factor, as you alluded to in the follow up. Obviously we can easily make a mask 100% 'effective' by covering it in plastic but it would be filtering out 0% as no air would get through. That relationship between the amount of restriction vs the amount of filtering would be a big part of the challenge in making n95 masks I imagine.

“Systemic racial inequities” actually is because darker skin is adapted for subsaharan UV exposure, not North American, which means the skin doesn’t produce as much melanin, which means they don’t produce enough Vitamin D. This is fact. However, I would like to hear you blatantly claim that Black people don’t know know how to wear a mask or whatever your claim is. Fact of the matter is that O type blood is more resilient and people who have sufficient levels of vitamin D are as well. The key is melanin production!
