Check out aatishb.com/maskmath to explore and for references.
This video is about how masks (whether surgical, or N95, or cloth) are counterintuitive and actually work much better epidemiologically than one might expect. Masks do double-duty, and the fraction of interactions with masks is much higher than the fraction of people wearing masks, so partially adopted, partially effective masks are able to reduce the basic reproduction number surprisingly well.

I'm in the US, and I consistently see people "wearing" masks. They wear them below their nose or around their chin. Sometimes they wear the mask UNTIL they start talking, and take it off to talk (which is likely the most important time to have a mask on outside of sneezing). It's honestly hard to hold out hope for humanity when guidelines this simple are so difficult for people to understand and follow.

It's probably harder to understand that all these rules fucked up your country more than the virus ever would have, in my opinion. Diseases are part of life, and so is death. I'm not saying everyone should die from this and stop caring about it, but reinforcing laws about personal behaviour is useless, you just inform and educate the public (something the US had a really hard time doing in the past decades, but I'm from Italy so who am I to judge) and then public supposedly will encorporate those guidelines into their daily life. But this was done in such an aggressive way that people just got scared and now they do whatever they want or can just to feel like they still have control. I get it, it was an emergency eccetera, but it's been what 7 months? If the US had to go to war I assure you it would have been done in a much more efficient way and much faster. But when it comes to the safety of the citizens it fuckes up. Such as other countries

If it were possible. If every living person could isolate themselves for about ten days (I don't know what the maximum incubation and infectious period is) - we might be able to wipe Covid19 out. It doesn't sound like much of a sacrifice, does it, compared to the sacrifice we're making now. It's just not possible, though. Some of us have medical needs that mean we can't isolate ourselves for even short periods.

@@batintheattic7293 the only problem here is that there will be always someone not respecting it, that is the only reason why it would never work, unfortunately. And you would need more days because it is 14 days + the days the person is sick. So I guess you would need about up to a month to be sure. Not so realisable anymore, is it? And for the medical need, that wouldn't be a problem because someone could just send them to you days before the quarantine. But it is a nice thought indeed, just some will always stay ignorant and stupid...

Further caveats: infectious dose and viral load. A single virus particle is not enough to make a person sick. There is a threshold that must be surpassed in order for a person to get sick. This is the infectious dose. Reducing the number of viral particles has better than a linear effect on the rate of disease transmission because doing so greatly reduces the probability of a person being exposed to an infectious dose within a given time period. Also, the severity of a viral infection depends on the number of infectious particles in the body. This is the viral load. Reducing the number of viral particles results in less-severe infections. Aside from the obvious benefits, this also has a positive effect on the rate of disease transmission because people with a higher viral load are more contagious than people with a lower viral load. So if you see that a certain mask is 50% effective at stopping viral particles, it actually has a greater than 50% effectiveness at reducing the rate of disease transmission.
@loopbackish
@loopbackish 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your statement if the infectious dose is close to what is breathed out by someone. Then, even a poor mask could completely stop infection. But what if the infectious dose is much smaller than what is typically breathed out? Then a 75% effective combination of masks won't do much to reduce infection rate. It may reduce viral load and initial severity of infection but not the infection rate. The problem is that physicists like to linearise everything.

Further caveat about viral load. Not all interactions are equal. Infection threshold = viral load x time. Thus, a short interaction, say, an elevator ride, even maskless, would be basically harmless compared to chatting for an hour a few feet apart with two masks. An infected person can only expel so many viral particles per minute when merely breathing or even talking. But with enough minutes, even highly effective masks don't stop the spread.
@jeffm5991
@jeffm5991 3 жыл бұрын
"Reducing the number of viral particles results in less severe infections." There is not an ounce of data that supports that claim. I know the New England Journal of Medicine recently published a paper stating that is the case, but it was pretty roundly criticized as junk. Once you're infected, you're infected. It's up to your body how severe the infection is, not the mask.

I was sceptical to masks at first. I had heard that as long as you kept a social distance, the benefits of wearing a mask were negligable. And perhaps that is the case, but when school started I had to move back to the city (I spent the "lockdown" at my parents) and that's when I realised that it's almost impossible to keep distance 100% all the time. Just look at people in the store or people getting on and off a bus. Those are mostly primitive instincts. They're not standing close to eachother because they don't believe in the disease, but rather because it goes against the human nature to not do so. Finally I must mention this study I read about where they asked people on the street two questions regarding how well people have followed the guidelines throughout the pandemic. The first was how well they had followed, the second how well others had followed. This was the most common answer: 1. I've followed the guidelines pretty well. 2. Others have gotten worse at following the guidelines as time went on. To me this clearly shows how little we know about our own shortcomings, and thus also why we should wear masks. We simply cannot trust even ourselves.

there is no benefit to wearing a surgical mask. And social distancing ONLY applies to people outside your household or outside of another household that is also social distancing properly. Meaning, you can go hang out with your neighbors and have an orgy if you feel like it. You can even go hang out with friends and family at their homes. The point is to avoid mingling with the general public. People you don't know, people you can't confirm are following recommended guidelines. As long as you keep it below 10 people even that really doesn't matter much. What made you think you need to wear masks and social distance in your own home? Have you been doing that this whole time? Once you pass 14 days, there's no more chance the virus is present. And if you live in the same house you share a closed airspace. Masks and distance can't even work in that scenario even if that was correct. I feel like DSHS should do a welfare check on your family tbh. It sounds like you are all developmentally disabled and that's just not fair to leave you all on your own to figure complex issues like this out.

I feel that social distancing can go along with masks. We shouldn't get too comfortable with one or the other. When I go shopping and everybody is wearing masks, I am more comfortable with a little less distance, but still maintain distance when I can. The mask is another tool in the arsenal. What really blows my mind is that health officials faced the very same argument 100 years ago with the Spanish Flu. We have 100 years of science on our side and we are still arguing about it. COVID 19 is really contagious and can be spread by asymptomatic persons, though how much is still unknown

Because you agreed to mask mandates and that masks make you feel safer so they can use what's known as plausible deniability to avoid lawsuits. That's what all this is really about. Hey, over here. From Spain, the most affected country by the Covid-19 in Europe) You see, I usually see people wearing masks in the streets (because it's obligatory), but they take them off in risky situations like when you're sitting in an overcrowded bar, only one meter away (or less) from the nearest stranger, or when you're are hanging out with a bunch of friends. The thing is, some people just get their masks put on so that they won't get fined by the police. It's not like they are assholes or something, I know they want their normal days back. But here's the thing, I am tired too and this thing already feels like a never ending loop. This video gives me some hope and I really wish that those people could know how helpful wearing a mask can be. I'll try to spread this as much as I can. Keep strong, fellow inhabitants of this wonderful world. Thank you.

There’s no need to wear a mask for something that has a 0.005% mortality rate. There’s even less of a reason for the government to tyrannically mandate that you wear anything. Videos like these make me lose hope that people will stop being so stupid and actually look things up for themselves.

Greetings from a fellow Portuguese neighbor. I want to point a couple of things to complete your comment. 1 - Regarding the "people just get their masks put on so that they won't get fined by the police". This applies to almost all the social rules (using phone while driving, drinking and driving, wearing the seatbelt, etc). Most people do the right things not because they know it's the right thing, but they are afraid of the consequences. 2 - I also wear a face mask on public places. But, given the mortality rate, is it really necessary to use everywhere? Is it even necessary to forbidden people to smoke in open public places so they don't take the mask off? You are being deeply affected by the virus, but I don't think that these measures will help anyone but the masks suppliers... 3 - You should change mask every 4h (if you use those blue thin ones). Does anyone control the use of old wear masks? The effectiveness just vanishes after those 4hours, so it's just another fashion adornment after that. 4 - Keep safe mate and keep strong!

Masks dont bloody work, its pointless. Yes they help, but the best is still washing hands and distance. In Denmark studies already been done showing 100.000 people having to wear a mask on average in Denmark with our current outbreak numbers, to prevent 1 case of covid19. Its so much fun living in a smaller part of the country now having to wear a mask in a gut damn half empty train...jeez. And if you want links to the study I will provide, this was shared by official people and state media.

@@pedromms8908 THAT'S THE PROBLEM. In other countries in Europe they don't even wear masks in the streets but their infection cases are much lower. It's just because some people just don't care, they don't want to get fined and that's all that matters. I usually see groups of people on Fridays buying a lot of alcohol and I can bet that they didn't thought about hygiene mesaures and those stuff. I think that if it were the opposite case, that people wear masks, get some distance in risky situations like when they are hanging out in groups and carry a tiny bottle of alcoholic gel so that they can use it after touching things that everyone touched (Like building's knob). Even if they don't wear masks in the street, the situation would be much better and I would also prefer it that way. But I think that cultural costumes are quite involved in what it's happing here... We can't tell people to do something and expect them to do it. Thank you so much, mate. I really aprecciate your support.

Well, that actually changes depending on the country, but goddamit, 0'005% is really lol, you must be greek gods or something. 😂 I do agree that forcing people to wear masks isn't as effective as ot should be without raising more awareness about it. The people that didn't care won't do it now. The death rate here has reached 0'055%, it may seem meaningless, but 30000 deaths of half million cases seems like a lot to me. I have friends that have lost family members because of this Covid-bitch. I wouldn't care that much if it only affected me. I mean, I consider myself a healthy person, I may suffer, but it's not very probable that I'd die from it. But everytime I feel tired of washing my hands 30 times a day and exhausted of wearing a mask, I think about my pregnant sister in-law and I think about my gf's parents who are a little old already. It may not be a major problem, but what if it is? I have a lifetime to regret the things that I could have done. If someone lives here, they must already know that there are a lot of elderly people here. And we reached a critical point in May that there were NOT enough equipment to treat the critical cases and the hospitals had to decide who lives and who doesn't. Probably quite traumatic for the nurses and doctors if you ask me. Pls, don't underestimate the corona-bitch-19, that's how we reached that point and that's why we are still in this situation.

Also let's not forget that we're speaking of exponential growth, not linear growth. If everybody wore a 50% effective mask this would mean every individual would effectively have a quarter of their expected infections per individual factored into the exponential growth formula for covid. Let's take an example formula for exponential growth where we take 100*e^3 which equals about 2008. Now we apply the 75% reduction to the exponent and find that 100*e^0.75 equals only 212 which is only about 10% of the original value before we applied our 75% reduction. Now obviously this isn't the exact formula for covid's expected spread, but this very clearly showcases the sheer power of attacking the exponent in an exponential growth curve, making masks and social distancing all the more effective the more people keep doing it. Added to this if we manage to get our exponent

masks only slow things down. they can't possibly 'work' to end the virus except in dreamland. and while they are 'working' they are causing other problems. directly and indirectly. if masks in japan kept you all virus free then you were kept free of ALL contagious diseases of which there are a myriad that the human being needs as part of its acclimatization to its environment. If masks kept you free of covid they kept you free of everything else - as you say, of the common cold even - and your body, your nation, missed out on a seasonal dose of adjustment and 'toughening' up. You are effectively in quarantine with bodily defensive abilities slowly dropping and dropping while outside newer and newer offensive particles are being created all the time.... and inevitably they will get in... like smallpox to the Indians. there are more bacteria in a human body than there are human cells and god knows how many more virus particles. it is the nature of our reality. they'e crawling all over you now, and all within you. you're immersed in a bath of them. you are a bath of them, it's bacteria that eat most of your food for you. it's your microbiome that even decides your moods and your attitudes. microbes is everything. that's microbes, not virus. I know. but if microbes are that important then you can bet your socks virus are equally important too - as perhaps this current thing demonstrates at least one side of. But either way because with masks you're keeping out bacteria even more efficiently than you're keeping out viruses. Much more. And if you think you're going to build a healthy successful nation of bacteria and virus free individuals then you're very much mistaken I think.

This is a great video on the basics of masks. However there are a few things to take into account. 1. Proper mask use. Wash your hands before handling a mask and after handling a mask. Only touch your face or mask when you put it on or take it off. Touch your mask by the parts furthest from your mouth and nose, so by the strings or edges. As soon as your mask is on treat it as potentially contaminated. Dispose of disposable masks right away. Put your cloth masks in the washing machine as soon as you get home. 2. The majority of transmissions (atleast in the Netherlands) Take place in familial or friendly gatherings in which people tend to be lacks with the rules and not wear a mask. Be careful with these still. Don't shake hands, don't share food, don't sit closer than 6 ft to eachother. Do not attended if you have been in contact with someone showing symptoms of CoViD 19 for 14 days prior to the event and check eachother on this. Do not have gatherings that are larger than single digit if the room allows you to keep a 6ft distance. And most of all, Keep yourself in check, report your own health if you think something is wrong. Don't hesitate to call a doctor. Stay safe and healthy people.

Just in case people are wondering, The thing about the masks is that in the performed studies there was at best a marginal reduction in transmission if masks were properly used. The reason why I elaborated on proper mask use and just how much effort it costs is because improper mask use seems to increase the chance of infection marginally as well compared to not wearing a mask. There is however a significant reduction of transmission if infected people wear facemasks even if they are unaware of the infection. Meaning that these measures are blanket measures aimed at catching non-symptomatic transmission or through people who are unaware of the infection. It is an excersise in risk assessment and the government is chosing to take as little risk as they can by obligating mask use. Here in the Netherlands this is currently restricted to urban centers like amsterdam and public transport. In either cases the recommended distance of 1.5 meters for asymptomatic transmission is not always something that can be applied, so that is why. The 1.5 meters or 6 yards btw are to prevent transmission through just talking or breathing. Not for sneezing or coughing. The same as in any given epidemic/pandemic the best way to reduce the R0 is to reduce contact between vectors. As this is unrealistic in a functioning society, countries try a lot of different or variable methods to mitigate transmission. Whether they make the right choice in this is often hindsight. What you can do for yourself and what absolutely does work is being mindful of the health of those you interact with and your own and as sad as it sounds, limit contact with those who do have other heart/lung conditions. For you it may not be more than a flu, but be mindful of transmitting it to other people who are vulnerable.

5:50 Take a look at the difference between the 2nd and 3rd situations. If the infectious person is wearing a mask, things are SIGNIFICANTLY more effective. But also, a person doesn't know if they're infectious or not. Half of all infections are caused by someone who was infectious, but not showing any symptoms. So, should I just wear 2 masks to help make up for someone else not wearing one? Update Feb. 10, 2021: Well, well, well... "CDC confirms that double-masking significantly helps prevent the spread of COVID-19" - Double masks decreased exposure by 92.5%, more than 2X what a single mask did. - Wearing a tightly-fitted mask reduced exposure by 60%, even when just one subject wore it. - That number was 96% when both did.

I suspect this is a joke, but still: One of the caveats at the end talks about how 50% effective doesn't tell us how the mask decreases transmission. This is significant for your idea, because two masks worn over another by the same person are not at all the same as two persons wearing masks. Masks are not just filters. So no, your strategy isn't effective.
@Not_what_it_used_to_be
@Not_what_it_used_to_be 3 жыл бұрын
Entcraft44 that's true, masks aren't filter, but they slow down the speed of air exiting the mouth, thereby limiting the distance the virus is able to travel. Having to travel through an extra layer of cloth DOES further decrease speed, so two masks would actually be more effective. This is why they recommend thick, multilayer cloth masks over thin surgical masks.

Another Caveat: This assumes people that wear masks are wearing them all the time. This is only true for community transmission of a virus. Not if someone travels to visit a friend and takes off their mask once they arrive. Or when mask wearers all meet up to go for dinner and all take off their masks for the duration of their gathering because they are eating/drinking. Really these circumstances of being in the company of people for extended periods of time are much more likely to cause a transmission than fleeting moments passing strangers on the street and in supermarkets.
@happyspaceinvader508
@happyspaceinvader508 3 жыл бұрын
Mask-wearing is reducing the community transmission, not eliminating it. Think of all the people sharing the bus/train with you... you’re preventing accidentally spreading it to them. If you then want to spread the virus to the random friends you’re visiting, nobody can stop you doing that. “But I don’t have the virus, I don’t even feel unwell”. Two words: incubation period. You won’t know you’re passing it on to other people until AFTER you’ve already done so. You may not even get symptoms yourself; any overweight friends or those with asthma may not be so lucky.

@@happyspaceinvader508 Here's yet another word, Eyes... which is 50% of your actual face that is susceptible to disease. A 100% effective mask that blocks all viral particles to your nose and mouth, is only 50% effective at blocking the spread to you. Oh and the biggest caveat to all of this, is not that masks doesn't work, they only work for a select amount of time. Do you know why surgical masks are made the way they are made, and why there are 4 different types of them? Not only due to difference in quality, but well mostly, but the sheer amount of time you could wear one, without particles on the inside of the mask spreading to the outside of the mask. Even more encouraging is that if you add on top of this the measure of Physical Distancing (something not mentioned at all in the video), the effectiveness increases significantly as well. As fewer 'Droplets' even come in your vicinity. In the Netherlands we have for a while stopped the spread almost entirely solely on physical distancing. In public it isn't mandatory to wear masks here. ONLY if you cannot for whatever reason maintain the physical distance of at least 1,5 meters. So in public transport, at the hairdresser or in other crowded places. Unfortunately people are getting less careful and keeping less distance, so it is spreading again...

You can also get covid if your eyes come into contact with the virus, too. Masks don’t prevent this, so where are those videos? At start of pandemic, masks were not effective. Then people bought all the n95 masks, and there was huge shortage and medical services were the only ones to wear them. Then we were instructed to cover our face with anything to stop the spread. Then we were told to get real masks. Now,we’re being told to double mask. Very soon we will be wearing full body suits. We’re getting sick, because the virus is transmitting into our eyes.

I don't know why everything has to turn into a political purity test. This should be a bipartisan issue that we can all work together on and help each other out. It's a shame our leadership has not set the example and helped make this whole thing go better. I don't want to turn this into a political argument, again, it's insane to me that it even IS a political argument, we should be able to speak the facts, and institute policy that protects public health, without even disclosing our political affiliation. But since it has become a political argument I have valid criticisms of both sides and how they have handled this. First, the president hasn't been an effective leader in this crisis. And if he had been then I think it wouldn't even be all that political. He would always have his critics of coarse, but I think it wouldn't be nearly as polarizing as it has been if he had just advised people to wear masks, wash hands, and social distance from the beginning, and listened to his experts in his own administration to handle it properly. That said, and I'm trying to be delicate here, and give as much of the benefit of the doubt (I could be much harsher in my criticisms, but I don't want to feed into that). On the other hand, I've seen incredibly hyperbolic criticisms of the president from the other side, saying he's personally responsible for EVERY death. I think that is pretty unfair to make those accusations. Covid-19 would have come to the US anyway. It would have infected people. And people would have still died. And that's even if the president had done everything right from the outset. EVERY nation on Earth has had to deal with this virus. EVERY country on the planet has been impacted in one way or another. Placing blame solely on the president is very irresponsible, and acting in a purely partisan way during and election year. I don't have a side in this conflict. I'm not pro any politician. I'm not saying who to vote for. And I've tried to refrain from saying who I intend to vote for, or not vote for. I think both sides have not handled things well, though perhaps in different ways. I think both sides have things they have said, or done, that has not helped us at all. And that includes blaming the other side, as well as whatever actions have been taken, or not taken. Maybe you disagree with that statement, but if we are being honest with ourselves, then we know this deep down. So let's first, set politics aside, and beat Covid together. We have the power to eliminate the virus and return to some kind of normalcy. Perhaps not completely, the world has changed in some ways that we can't go back on. And perhaps this thing will make us more mindful of other infectious diseases, such as the seasonal flu, which also claims many lives every year. But perhaps we can make Covid a thing of the past. Second, let's admit that no side is completely right. If anyone is trying to spread FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) we should not listen to them. If they are speaking sane and logical facts, and they are encouraging us to work together beyond political boundaries, then we should listen to that. And above all of that, even if you can't get behind the idealism, even if you have disagreed with the majority of what I've said; if a business or a city or an organization has asked people to wear masks, we should wear them. We shouldn't be trying to find ways to get out of it. We shouldn't try to push back on it. We shouldn't assume they are part of some political agenda. We should just comply and wear masks to help protect the other people, the workers, and public officials we are interacting with. We should try to keep ourselves healthy, and protect our own families. Even if you don't think you will get sick, or you think you won't show any symptoms, how would you feel if you unwittingly passed it on to a loved one? A friend? A co-worker? Someone at the grocery store? What if that person had to go to the hospital? What if they had to be intubated (it's not pleasant, and can cause lasting damage)? What if they ended up dying from it? Let's not turn each other into enemies. Let's not spite each other. Let's instead think of those who could be impacted and hurt by our carelessness. Or even we ourselves could be impacted by it. And let's not assign blame to others. Either getting mad that people are wearing masks, or that people aren't wearing masks. These people are not our enemies. They are our neighbors. Our community. Our friends. Our family. They are our fellow countrymen and women. We are all in this together. Let's be kind to each other. Let's be respectful of each other. And let's help each other out.😷💧👏

The first and biggest problem in the US handling of the pandemic was the complete ineptitude of the CDC and other government agencies. And I'm talking about the career employees here, not just the political appointees. These agencies are supposed to be an example for the world in their professionalism and depth of knowledge and instead they've been a global laughing stock. For months they downplayed the risk from this obviously dangerous pandemic, and then actively lied to the American people by going out and saying to NOT wear masks, despite decades of research that masks are effective in protecting against respiratory infection. As the video alludes, Asian countries have known this for a long time and it's why mask wearing is so accepted in some of the countries there. Of course, the President has greatly exacerbated the damage done since by making mask wearing a political statement.

This video has an important omission: the virus is here to stay. It will not disappear. So all we are doing with masks and reduced transmission is slowing the RATE of transmission, not the eventual EXTENT of transmission. Until we reach about 70-80% herd immunity the virus will continue to spread. There is a good reason to slow the rate of transmission, and that is to prevent hospital overload. But we are far far below any risk of hospital overload in all but a few counties. Meanwhile the collateral damage of economic shutdown will cause immense harm for generations, with trillions in debt payments that will only come from young taxpayers and government confiscation of the wealth of retirees. Merely slowing the spread rate is not a sufficient excuse for the immense economic harm.

@Matt Guitar wooooah there. 1. BOTH Viruses and Bacteria have been SEEN with a microscope, not only that, even the process of infecting itself was observed 2. You are debunking outdated version of the theory, its kinda pointless. 3. There is no such thing as "symptoms in absence of pathogen", there is either another pathogen at work, or there is allergic reaction, or the body is attacking itself. 4. "Absence of symptoms with pathogen present" does not violate anything, because 1. Just because there are no VISIBLE symptoms does not mean there is no defence reaction at all, it just means its small, and 2. Symptoms are often not caused by the pathogen, but are a defence mechanism, eg. coughing or vomiting, so sometimes there are no symptoms if the body does not fight back 5. The answer to the chicked-egg situation is always evolution. Viruses are literally build only out of 2 parts: protein capsule and DNA/RNA. The genetic code of the virus is a "command" that causes the cell to replicate that code and build more protein capsules. In fact, it works almost like a computer virus - you have a machine capable of "creating code" (computer or a cell) and you have a piece of self-injecting and self-replicating code in a programming laguage of the machine (either a computer one or DNA/RNA)
@Archimedes.5000
@Archimedes.5000 3 жыл бұрын
@Matt Guitar 6. What toxins exactly? Where do these toxins come from? Why is body using that EXACT method of ejecting it from the body? Everything you said sounds believable until you start digging for definite proof. But unlike the theory you presented, the germ theory HAS answers for each of those questions, of course not for every case possible, but for enough of them to see this as a general rule. There are medical conditions caused by toxins (well alcohol intoxication for one) but that doesn't meant EVERY condition is caused by it and its not a reason to reject the germ theory, especially since it was confirmed by microscope observations. Think about it like this: if germ theory is completely wrong or conspiracy, then why people believe in BOTH germs and toxins? If it was just a false assumption then every disease would be explained by the germ theory to make sure there arent any exceptions, but this doesnt happen. We have diseases caused by germs, caused by toxins, caused by genetics, caused by radiation and each of those causes is well documented

Matt Guitar All of this nonsense is ridiculous, but the chicken and egg thing is just laughable. Remember evolution? Or is that also a conspiracy? New viruses emerge because old ones mutate. That is, new viruses get created through reproduction like literally any living thing. Of course the process in itself is completely different but there’s really nothing mysterious here. Asking «where did the first virus come from?» isn’t just a similar question to «where did the first chicken come from?», it’s literally the exact same question. It’s asking «where did life come from?». The answer to _that_ is actually a lot more complicated, and nobody has really figured it out yet, but if you’re surprised by the existence of viruses, you should be just as surprised, or, well, actually, a *whole* lot more surprised, by the existence of chickens, because last time I checked, chickens were a bit more complicated than viruses.

4:10 I think this part needs to be emphasised even more. With the current measures, the reproduction rate is around 1.0 for most countries most of the time, i.e. the number of cases remains relatively constant. Even a small improvement from 1.1 to 0.9 makes a difference between an increase to 160% or a decrease to 60% in cases after 5 cycles. The population with a reproduction rate of 1.1 would have 2.67x the cases than if it had reduced it to 0.9 then.

This math is fairly simplistic, most people should already understand the concept of 2 way protection. Even though protecting yourself with a mask isn't proven and far from a certainty. I think I only agree with the baseline. Which is masks are better than no masks. In this equation you assume the effectiveness of the mask. As you mentioned the effectiveness on the box is not equal to the the prevention rate of getting the disease, this also depends on how easily the disease is transmitted. If transmissions only occurred by breading in each others face you could have this as a base model (even though that assumption would still be wrong, it would at least be directly related), but it doesn't. Here's some math to take in consideration and press on people: When you are healthy, wearing a mask without the right etiquette increases the chance of 'YOU' getting sick by XX%. I say XX because it is known and quite evident that it does, but I don't know the exact number, but also because the number is of little consequence to what follows. If you assume that most if not all people are either getting tired of wearing masks / just do it to not be shunned and abide by the law / or just don't know any better... You can state that the same XX% more people will get sick. When you get yourself sick, you start contributing to making other people sick. The point to take away here is not that masks do not work, but to not just tell people to wear a mask. Rather explain to them how to wear a mask, and how NOT to handle them when used and actually show them the whole story. Not to dumb down information because we think they can't understand the whole truth or importance. I know some people give that appearance, but in my opinion it is because often they are assumed to be too stupid. None of this is too complicated to understand, the math isn't that complex. To both politicians and doctors alike: "It is nice you do what you do, don't get me wrong, but you are not THAT smart". Just tell people the whole story.
