Yeah, and then continued to be bystanders as Monk was maimed and then truly murdered in front of them. Certainly not the wisest decision from Monk, but then again can you ever really count on bystanders if a determined murderer comes along?

He tried to behave like he and Bill weren’t part of the same hypocrisy. Like Monk had won the election fair and square where the “people had spoken” He also wanted to act like Bill’s time was over. I’m not sure what Bill came there to do but by the time that little speech of Monk’s was over, it could only go one way.

this scene is so important to the movie, because it shows the true nature of the Butcher... before that he clouds himself in rants about honorable old ways and being a man of principles. in this scene it is shown how he reacts when he loses

@Christopher Hinks the only thing thats wrong with that is, that Bills father fought a freedom war, yet Bill himself ruled his part of the city like a king that no one voted for. Thus not really democratic himself. so he still is a hypocritical character even within his believe system. Also, killing him from behind is hardly an act of a upright man. if it would have been a fight with both drawn weapons, I would say nothing.
@thetomster7625
@thetomster7625 4 жыл бұрын
@Christopher Hinks good point: its also a philosophical question in regards to "shall people without opinion or to much fear to act upon it be ruled or are they still entitled to freedom even if they are not using it?!" each side or the other: quite a good movie - although it could have done without the default pseudo love story.

it's not just that. it's also the fact that he expects this murder to have an echo and a political message which bill clearly says: "this is the minority vote". he expresses that he's been bullshitted by some migrants who now hold the upper hand in politics and that he (the natives) has become a minority which is why he rebells knowing it won't change the politics to what it was. in short: this is bill's way of rebelling against the corrupt.

The character of Monk changed a lot over the course of rewrites. There's an earlier version of the screenplay where Vallon doesn't know who Monk is in the prologue; he even suggests Monk go fight for the Natives if he just wants money. Monk is portrayed as this Celtic giant who not only kicks the door open, he kicks it off its hinges. He breaks a man's spine with his knee during the battle, and the script keeps hyping him up as the strongest fighter of the Five Points. He even openly challenges Bill during the script, even pulling him off Amsterdam in one scene. Hell, Boss Tweed sends Bill with a proposition to join his side because that's how much of a threat he apparently is, despite being an independent mercenary with no affirmed loyalty to anyone. And that whole "citizens of the Five Points" speech is just a humiliation of Bill, where Monk asks the people if he should agree to join the Natives while insulting Bill as he stands right beside him. Monk's death is even worse, too. Bill walks into the barbershop when Monk is about to be trimmed, and jams a pair of scissors into Monk's eye. Then he beats Monk to death with his war club, at one point knocking the scissors, eye included, out of his socket. Amsterdam witnesses it too, and Bill threatens him as he strolls off with the war club.

There was a whole formalized set of rules of when they had to fight... not an active warzone, stationed within a set amount of miles, same rank, etc. Dueling was officially not allowed by these two men both went from Captains to Briagder Generals while openly carrying on this practice & wounding the fuck out of each other for twenty years.)

All is fair in love and war. The terms of the first battle were set. After that, it's on you. And if Bill just wanted to assassinate Monk "like a sneak thief" as he called it, he could have. The man sent him a note with a pig's head for God's sake. That's quite the "heads up" (buh dum ch). Monk tried to rally the crowd against Bill and got nothing, and still turned his back. He was running, and died the same way soldiers who run from battle were killed. Blade to the back. Not even a through and through. So everyone knows. Edit: technically Monk got bludgeoned to death, but it was still to the back of the head and he probably would've died from the cleaver anyway

@@imemberberry Cause Monk was an elected official,a sheriff,agreeing to the fight would be career suicide. Bill knew this and used it against him,just the same way he doesnt charge him cause then monk would be allowed to kill him. Its never about fear of death,Monk fears losing the power he has gained for the irish and forgets that he is in the end a street thug. Bill deciding to challenge him exactly when he became sheriff is like challenging a karate champ the day he becomes a literal monk,its obvious its to create a dilemma. Is monk written in an inconsistent,haphazard way? I thinks so,think the original 4 hour version would clear alotta shit up.

What was Bill supposed to do after delivering a pigs head and " today" sticking in the top. Did Bill and Monk have secret weekly meeting to discuss the merits of the word ghoul or that of the club vs cleaver? And Monk just forgot and left Bill sitting there all by his lonesome. A little reminder then from William. Maybe. But I'm betting that it meant today one of us is dying. They've literally discussed it for years in monosyllables. The buildup was excruciating for the people of the 5 points. During tense times men would speculate and then borrow money from one or the other and hoped the club was true or the cleaver sharp but it never came. No fight in the history of the world had been coming so long since Noah and everybody not on the Ark had there throwdown. Bill's balls were purple already after not killing Leo. Monk really just got elected over night and he is already Abe Lincoln. No scratch that. Abe wouldnt have turned his back on Bill The Butcher or went back in what looked like cramped quarters anyway. More like knife territory than club back inside. He got what he should have got forgetting where he came from. Worse he thought Bill would do the same. What Bill did was exactly what should have been expected of him. Monks display softened Bill's heart and he felt shame at thought of what he had almost done and deprived them of such a leader. Shame that he thought for a second about not doing it and to have not done it wouldve been the death of Bill, the taming of him to keep around for curiosity and amusement now that he is declawed. the end of the spectacle of fearsome acts which is his power without it Bill is a man to be negotiated with and reasoned and talk about the democratic way. With it Bill is a man to be feared above all else.

@@dameinoferrall2400 it's good to know you also appreciate the soundtrack. Vangelis is like no other eh? His Blade Runner music was also a huge part of that film for me. Soundtracks are so often underappteciated. Again I think you're right on the subject of Hopkins, he was so dominant in the movie but multifaceted; he's truly demented at times but I always feel sympathetic in that he went out of his way to help Fletcher Christian into the position and was betrayed and isn't there a sneaking admiration for him when he survives and successfully navigates back to civilisation? On a side note, have you read about the legal proceedings in the last few decades centred on the descendants on Pitcairn? It seemed that a very peculiar culture had grown up in regards to age of consent. The island became fascinating from a sociological point of view, pretty much a one-off. I'm glad you reminded me of the film, I must stick it on again, so many great actors. A proper film.

@Rekaert
@Rekaert 4 жыл бұрын
I never really saw Bill as honourable in that sense. Sure, he appreciates straight-forward behaviour and squaring up like a man if you have a problem, but I always had him pegged as the kind of guy who would do whatever it took once a fight was under way. He killed priest Vallon for instance in the midst of a mass brawl where people were dropping like flies. Both knew they were in it, and both knew it was a lethal fight. He even declared his presence before he attacked, but just threw some other poor sap in front of Priest's blow. With Monk, he offered him a straight up fight, but Monk tried to avoid it, and I can well imagine Butcher losing respect for him due to that, but not about to let him live just because he won't fight. I think there's a consistent if twisted sense of honour there, but it's not necessarily what modern audiences would call honour.
