Agree with your statement. Tony had a different thought here about what you could do with stock parts and these guys completely screwed it up. This is not Tonys fault by any means. I am also disappointed in the turn of the build. I was very interested to see what you guys could do with all stock. Sometimes people need to step off their pedestal and do what they originally agreed to.

That’s what I was interested in also, the tech side. To take parts that was available back in the day before all the aftermarket and see the true ability of great engine builders take those parts to the extreme and run and tune it see what it makes. I think the problem arises from some of those parts aren’t going to do what the other parts are capable of. Mainly the stock cam. The 2 barrel carb big ? Are they able to massage it enough to do the job? That’s what I think a lot of us wanted to see.
@72chevelle156
@72chevelle156 4 ай бұрын
face it, you ruined the original idea for mission impossible it wasn't meant to be built for sale. it was meant to see how far a poor shade tree mechanic can massage stock parts and see what benefits are gained. you should change the name to 318 contest build.

Well, I get it but I'm disappointed. I really wanted to see if all you guys, working as a team, could get 318 hp out of a 318 using only stock parts. And brains. Am I the only one disappointed? We all know you can throw a bunch of "trick" parts at it and make way more power. That's not really the same thing is it? Well, best of luck on the new direction.

I agree with all of these statements. On one hand, how did I know Tony was guna be a problem? But also doing the build with a bunch of trick parts & aluminum heads makes it a run of the mill utube build. A thousand of them out there. Anybody can make power by going to the aftermarket & buying it. I'm all for buying a performance camshaft. But I thought it be interesting to see what can be dun with oem heads. That's what my builds are like & that's what I relate too. That's what I find interesting & I think it separates the men from the boys. Sure I like the power of aluminum heads. But im never guna have the extra money to own a good set so I continue to rediscover the oem stuff for myself. I have alot of fun with them.

Another pipe dream left high and dry by UTG. The list is endless. 300hp is easily attained but nobody has mentioned camshaft. It can be done with a 230* hydraulic. The original UTG fiasco made close to it and it was a disaster at every level. Perhaps some of us need to take this upon ourselves, no goals in mind. Just see what power it makes. I have a fledgling channel with a little over 500 subs. I’m in the Charlotte area.

He wasn't looking for an engine for a hot street racer like you guys have turned this into. Both are cool projects, but now, Tony's low-buck idea is gone. The idea, as the clips with Tony showed, and even you said, was to show what using your brain and not your wallet would do. Well, with vendors throwing new parts at this for free, something only someone like David could pull of to his much-deserved reputation could do, we now lost the low-buck aspect.

This became so bastardized that I lost interst in it. David is an immeasurable wealth of knowledge, that I will not refute. This should've been been something that any good ol' boy could recreate and then it went off the rails. St. Judes is a great organization and I have no issue with anyone raising funds for them, but what's being built is something that requires very deep pockets. Good luck with your highly modified and ttricked out 318. Once it became bastardized in this way, I washed my hands of watching the build. Respect for your knowledge, but it's so far past the original roots that it's not what the original intent was.

You lost it and lost me, sorry. I already built a full competition 273 with stock heads back in the 1970's that exceeded 300 horses but was looking forward to the original concept 318. The 1965 four-dour Valiant ("Valiant Effort") that the 273 was installed in was sold to the Renteria Brothers in 1980 who changed out the entire drive train and then raced it on the drag strip for another 20 years after that. I had bracket raced it at Fremont Raceway circa 1973-1977 (in red oxide primer) before getting it painted and lettered.

Charlie is amazing, 300hp would be easy with his help and the wild nature of the engine would have been amazing with Davids motifications. Granted, david had health issues, but he already had the rods done and cam getting ground was etc. Who cares if it failed down the road, thats not the point. Even performance parts fail.

I get it, and Tony doesn't even have the most credibility with, eh, personnel issues on youtube, but I kinda feel for him on this one. -If you're so backed up with work that it created these issues, like involving 3rd parties, delays, etc, then maybe it wasn't in all 3 of your best interests to take it on? -He seemed very pointed about the spirit of his idea, from the get go. There wasn't much wishy washy crap from his end to cause confusion about it, at least from what made it to this platform. It's always unfortunate when things don't pan out, and it is definitely a challenge to coordinate that much work and that many parties, and still make it to finish line. At the end of the day, however, it seems Tony said "I have this 318, and I have an idea" and the parts he donated to the porject to work with were taken, and the circus ran off without him.

I'll admit that my initial interest matched Uncle Tony's; I can't afford to do an engine build and restore on my Challenger that I really want so I'm rebuilding the stock 318 and keeping it 2 barrel with minor improvements (+1 cam, 302 heads, mild porting)... the original mission was tailor made for my car. Yeah someday hope to build a much nicer 360 but I could be running this 318 (and loving it!) for years before that happens. Wish I could afford (and wish David had time) to do full custom ground rods and crankshaft for me, or suitable aftermarket parts, but again not happening. Budgets be what they is. I fully understand UTG's position. But I'm absolutely delighted that you're still continuing the project, and are going to do the two barrel build and runs. We can see if its worth tweaking the cast iron manifold and modifying the carb like you did (I already picked up a good BBD core for experimentation) and that's likely to be my main area of 'mission' implementation if it turns out to be worth the effort. Thank you all for keeping this alive! And thanks to Charlie also who just keeps tweaking and testing and improving on his contributions, and to David for the inspiring (though for me unattainable) rod and crank modifications and other info! There's good info out there for oiling system modifications on Mopar small blocks. I look forward to what you end up doing.

@richjordan9375 great post. I have little budget, so I will still try to learn from the tricks and tips I have seen regarding using my labor and limited stock parts. If they can still show us dyno results of the most original parts set up with 2 barrel and the labor modified stock parts and each separate dyno test as they make their increases… like ladder steps, I can learn and know when I need to jump off of the ladder and let other people learn as the ladder climbs higher since we all likely have different build goals. I did like to 2 engine build idea… one like close to original and one like their ultimate for give away to the most people interested in buying a raffle ticket. I am sure like most of us… time is the most valuable thing we all wish we had more of. I will hang on to the end to learn… but at home, I will build my own original idea of the 318 mission impossible… since I have been struggling to do this build for 40 years. It's a shame on what the project has been twisted into, with the introduction of aftermarket parts involved, might as well name the mission impossible series to: Mission possible. There's no challenge about getting an engine to make power with go-fast parts, but making an engine to go fast without go fast-parts is where the initial challenge was at. Point being, try to get all the stages dyno'd so you can show the progression. Show what a UTG massaged mostly stock parts motor would do. It's an important step up the ladder. Especially to the backyard porter and bolt-on crowd. The million dollar BBD is not important. None of us would stay there ... Everybody would just bolt on a 4-bbl and move on from there 😁

I think getting St. Jude in the mix doomed this project. Once someone is putting down lots of cash the motor needs to be streetable. Next issue I believe is that some in the building process being bored w/ a 100 percent stock build + the time and effort involved for little gain compared to what could be built with aftermarket. Issue is that wasn’t the point. Sure the motor will be cool and run great and all, but the original point was stock parts.

Tony's concept was VERY CLEARLY laid out from the get go! He asked you and David if you would be interested in collaborating on the project. You and David agreed. Now, thousands of You Tubers were very keen to follow along. The thing that gets me is, if you two are so tied up with other projects, health concerns, ect., why would you even entertain Tony's invite? And then, after changing a very interesting idea into yet another small block aftermarket parts wrench, telling your "PEOPLE" if you don't like it, we don't care! DISGUSTING!!! I am old and health challenged similar to David. I know the toll it can take. It seems to me that David himself, finds other people to do a lot of "his" work for him these days. This project should never had been "grandstanded" to a charity auction status in the first place; THAT was a self centered mistake. You two took Tony's idea and through him and his concept out the window. SHAME on ya! UNSUBSCRIBED

I totally understand, and agree with Tony on what this project has turned into. As soon as it became a charity auction, then reliability became a concern, whereas before that, it would not have mattered if it blew up on the dyno, the idea was to modify the stock parts to the extreme and see what worked. Tony gets a lot of sh!t for leaving the project, but it's not his fault that after he came up with the idea, supplied all the parts, that it was taken in a different direction outside of his control. And now 3 other content creators will be profiting off Tony's back with views, and he won't be involved.

@@sbf_fox2434 and the point was those heads were not supposed to be used. The heads Charlie stated with are good for 25hp just bolting them on the earlier motors even without porting. And the castings are able to be ported in ways the original 60s-70s heads are not able to be. He started with the wrong parts from the beginning.

Operation disaffection ... This has gone from what the average Joe can do on a budget aiming for 1 hp per ci, to some kind of lets build a max hp Nascar engine to run at 7500 rpms. The head porting videos are a gift to insomniacs. Besides becoming more of a concern for raising money for St. Jude which is highly commendable, the project seems stifled more by a fear of failure. St. Jude’s is a noble cause and to me it is awesome to see people want to be a part of what your doing. I think keeping the stock head, cam and showing that the bottom end could be built from stock parts is a great progression on the way to a reliable and fun engine. Who wouldn’t like an engine that you can turn to 7500? In the end all this great content is free and I think the showing of gearhead charity that all of you are displaying is amazing.

I was very interested in the original concept of maxing out stock 2bbl config/parts as I have a 5.2L magnum that I wish to follow along the same vein. Are the heads too far along now by Charlie that stock 2bbl/intake flow would just be stepping backwards? I worked briefly with a short-track late-model team and they used 2bbl carbs (albeit on Eddy performer RPM intake) that freakin' screamed past 7k+! What about stage 1, stage 2, etc. where you start with UT's idea, get the heads to a happy street/strip medium and dyno it. Then look at 4bbl, intakes, rocker ratios, and cam upgrades (bolt-ons) that you would be proud to auction off?

Someone had pulled the 273 and dropped a smog era 318 in it. I found a 360 from a 1 ton dump with a spun rod bearing. I swapped heads cam and intake. I didn't have a TQ, so I used a Quadrajet. What ever, I was working on a dairy farm and had no money. Wish I still had that car now. 25 years later, if I knew then what I know now. I'm still not interested in aftermarket aluminum cylinder heads for my own builds. My customers can buy them if they want. Pardon me as I ramble, I'm just glad your doing the 318 build. I'm still interested and following.

As soon as St Jude's was put into the mix I knew it was over. As far as the everyday Joe doing this build with some success, the knowledge and tools required to duplicate what has already been done far exceeds what many people are capable of. If you paid a shop to replicate the work done it would be much simpler and probably cheaper to do the standard bolt ons at whatever level and be done with it. One way or the other it takes money and time to accomplish the goal at hand. The original concept here was a solid one and should have been adhered to realizing that some of the modifications would be at a premium cost over some of the aftermarket alternatives. It all comes to the quality of the rebuild in the end. The knowledge learned from modifying and using the stock parts and the why it's being done it what people want! Good luck with your build. KP

Funny, when I first heard of this project, I was thinking about doing something similar with my slant six. As I looked into it I found a bunch of stuff Uncle Tony and Shane P. had already done. Thought the 318 idea was great. Use factory metal and see what you could grind away to make it the best it could be. My slant is done and apparently so is the original 318 idea. A lot of surprising high rpm high hp 318s out there. Still no stock metal 1hp per cube motor. It's a shame.

It was just a vision! All you can do is try and shoot for it, but the real realities and the unforseen responsibilities get in the way. Especially when there are three involved. And over time one can easily loose sight of the original plan. I dont think it should be expected to be exactly what was originally hoped for. Maybe another time it could be planned and organized better to make that happen. But not every individual can fully see the necessary time thats needed to devote to something or a project in their lives at any given moment. The mighty 318 is a well liked engine, and the people that know, they know that the 318 is loaded with potential. And it is such a good sounding motor with the simplest mod of having duel exhaust. And a built 318 can sound just awesome.

Here is my experience with a "throw it together" 318 build. 203/239 whp/tq with the "302" head lightly worked, whiplash cam, 904, stock rockers, long tubes, stock 4bbl intake, 600 Edelbrock, and clutch fan. Put on an alum 4 bbl intake and carb. Put a flat tappet cam in it. Also use headers. Those are the basic speed parts and you can buy them used for cheap if you want. Very fee people care about stock 2 bbl’s and exhaust manifolds.

Personally I think you guys are, to put it as politely as possible, as unreliable as friends can be! Anyone who would agree to a project and then, on a whim decide on your own to just arbitrarily change the intent and direction of that project without consulting the partner that was responsible for its conception is simply something friends do NOT do. If you want to build some POS hotrodded aftermarket collection of parts and auction it off for a good cause, fine. But that's no reason to turn your back on a friend in the process by underhandedly violating the ground rules YOU agreed to. To put it plainly, that's called back stabbing at it's finest. I've unsubscribed from your channel and will pass the word as best I can to everyone I know that you guys are only interested in what YOU want and to hell with everyone else, including I'm sorry to say, someone you claim is one of your friends. If I was Tony I would never talk to you guys again. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Luckily for you Tony doesn't feel that way, but rest assured I doubt you'll ever be able to regain the trust you've lost. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who agrees to an idea and its ground rules, then purposefully refuses to follow it through is not worth dealing with.
