WELCOME TO MY CURLS

Күн бұрын

I recently had some mixed feelings on going grey. My curly grey hair and I spent an entire week on the beach, and I was the ONLY woman with grey hair! It made me feel a little insecure and second-guess my decision. I've been going grey for a year, and my curly hair has now become curly silver hair. It's a lot to handle at times! I'm going grey naturally at the age of 48. Was this the right decision for me? Let's chat about it on the beach.

Have you every found yourself in a situation where you second-guessed going grey? If so, what was the situation? And did you change your mind and color your hair again? I would love to hear from you.

Do you think it’s because you are used to going to the beach with your hair all colored an now the new you is here. And do you see if the ladies on the beach hair up close to actually see if they dyed their hair? I go through hair color withdrawal as I have dyed my hair since 15 years or so. That made me so tired. No I just tell myself this is me and I am tired of hair dye. You can get thru this. Remember you to are stooping the dying for reason. That will help you make it through

Look at it this way these women that dye there hair an go in the sun guess what happens there hair fades, who knows if the salt water fades your hair to.Then if there pools there’s chlorine that also does a number on dyed hair. So rock that grey hair an live life.

You summed it up at the end... you love your life - hair colour doesn’t change that. Keep focused on what your whole body allows you to do. That’s what’s important. And if you are saving yourself from worrying about colouring your hair, that’s just more energy and time to go to the beach or eat key lime pie!! But anyway... your hair is gorgeous. Be proud!

When I am around women and they have all their colored hair, I second guess myself. I wonder if my husband is embarrassed. Do I looked all washed up??? But then when i blow dry my hair and I see my grays underneath, because my hair is like yours.... I have just my bangs that are gray, and underneath. But then I say I want to be healthy, and not follow people that I have to create a fantasy look.... I want to be just me. Oh well I guess. But I still wonder if my husband is embarrassed. He says no, but is it the truth????

I’m at almost 1 year of growing out my natural silver hair and I understand what you mean. Some days it doesn’t bother me but some days I feel like I look so unput together. The only bright side is remembering my end goal and actually loving what has grown out so far. That mom on the beach who is fit and has long dark hair might be looking at you wishing she had your beautiful curls 😊

Stay strong, we silver sisters have good days and bad days. The demarcation line ist the hardest thing, but when it''s all grown out, it will look great, believe me!

I have mixed feelings all the time. I’m 42 and every single person I talk to says I’m going to look old and that I am letting myself go/giving up. I’ve already bleached my brown hair to ease my transition and I have two inches of gray growth. I started going gray in my 20’s. I’m done coloring-so over it. I am looking forward to being unique, but more importantly, finally being myself. Thanks for the inspiration!

Don’t waste your time on the beach worrying about your hair, you look great! If it makes you feel bad looking at other women with dyed hair, then just don’t look at them. Look at the beautiful scenery around you and enjoy your books and beer, and concentrate on things that make you feel good! 💕

This video from a while back was in my feed and I love it. Your candor is so refreshing. I'm 46 wks in and during the first few months, I know I would have colored my hair if we weren't in lockdown. I have very thick hair and the idea of attempting to do this on my own was way too daunting so I stood the course and I am so happy.

I'm at the beach a few times a week, living on the west coast of Australia. I can assure you, nobody brings their best self to the beach here! I feel great! I'm 4.5 months in but my hair was hennaed so there's not so much of a demarcation line anymore as it has naturally faded. I'm 57. And I look at all the young girls today. None of them look particularly individual. I feel a bit rebellious with my silver hair. Loving it so far. I see it as a middle finger to the expectations of women in society. Please don't feel insecure. You look fantastic! And let's face it, it's only hair. A year ago I had a brain tumour removed leaving me deaf right side, no senses of smell, taste and no right balance nerve. So, in the grand scheme of things, all of us need to realise our priorities. Grey hair=unique individuality and embracing one's age and wisdom. We are all on a journey and we are lucky we even lived to get grey hair. Some people aren't so fortunate.

Hey beautiful! I've just embarked on my greying journey and you've been one of my inspirations! I'm 44 and been thinking about going grey for 3 years now and women like you have helped me make the jump. You're asking what our insecurities might be and mine is simply the fact that people don't get how comfortable, happy and content I am with myself. I don't obide by "standards" of beauty imposed on us by the cosmetic or fashion industry. Don't get me wrong and go thinking that I'm outside of the norm, I'm not. Most people find me beautiful and attractive and many love my confidence and look up to me. I look up to other women that are themselves and not afraid to be. You're one of them, I think. It's absolutely OK to feel doubtful occasionally especially when we're taken out of our comfort zone or our environment. I bet no-one on that beach made a comment or made you feel that way, but you just thought it because its a new milestone in your journey. For what it's worth, I think you look great and you're fit. When I'm on the beach I always wear a straw cowboy hat or some sort of hat to protect my face from the sun, you could try if it helps you feel more secure about your hair. I have curly hair too, like yours and same as you, as a young girl I hated it mostly because my mum didn't know how to make it look good but one thing is, on the beach..... IT'S EPIC AND GLORIOUS!!! Leave it loose and embrace your lioness mane! I'm only 6 weeks into my journey and already I feel empowered!!! Can't wait for it to be dye free!

Thank you so much for sharing your feelings. It’s important to release. My personal reminder for these kinds of feelings is this: I will aim to improve myself in whatever ways I can using myself as a measuring stick....we are all designed by a divine creator and it’s my aim to embrace myself as my most authentic. Hi. Love watching your journey. So brave to put it out there to thousands. As I mentioned in another of your posts - being your authentic self is the best gift you can give yourself. That’s how I saw my journey and I think that’s what you’re really reflecting on sitting on the beach. Grey is just a colour. Period. Authenticity is having whatever colour you want whether it’s the trend or against the grain. In what you wear or how you have your hair. If it feels right then do it. Whether that’s red black or grey. Treat yourself well and you will shine. I wish I would have walked down the beach to see you with my multi-coloured grey silver white hair so you could see how I own it. Then there would have been two of us. I love all the changes I made to accommodate my new look. From clothes to makeup. And that’s authentic too. Keep on keeping on. You’re doing great.

Yes! we are enjoying your channel. You look great in your bathing suit. Have the key lime pie...your on vacation!!! 2 weeks ago did the "big chop" because i couldn't take the 2-tone. At first, I was like, "OH! no what did I do....I seem so much more grey!!" Then I also thought, "Oh!, so this is how it is going to be?" ....( I still have some more dyed part to chop off. I went very short, cut 5 inches off and it was just under my chin. One more chop and it will be done.) It really did take me back at first....but 2 days after, it was all good!!! The cashier at the store complimented on how nice it was and said I looked younger and freer. At the gym another lady said she wished she could go that short and loved my grey. Then at Macy's a lady said my grey was just stunning and asked what color lipstick I had on!!!!!! I was stunned??!!! All this in a 3 day period!!! My natural color is pretty close to yours and I think it is just natural to second guess and wonder who this lady in the mirror is!!! I think all these feelings come because we dyed it. If it naturally greyed it would be a gradual process and not so much to think about. i am happy with it and NEVER going back....Life is too short ....to waste all that time, energy and money on hair!!! Freedom feels GREAT!!!!

Yes, I’ve second guessed about my gray. But now, I am 8 months in and I love it. I plan to get a shorter, fresh, youthful and modern cut this week. I have received nothing but compliments about the color and I’m just so grateful to have made it to 59. You can always get a conditioning/cellophane treatment with color or to add more shine for a temporary boost to your hair too. Thanks for being vulnerable and honest with all of us, Rene! It’s funny how your idea of perfect beach hair is so different from mine. I have naturally fine-textured hair (but a lot of it). Having this hair type has been the bane of my existence! Fine hair must be washed daily because it sucks up dirt and grease from the air like there’s no tomorrow. Unfortunately, tomorrow always comes and then it’s time again to shampoo, rinse, and repeat. Why not just live in the bathtub? And should I ever have the audacity to mix this kind of hair with salty ocean breezes, well, let’s not even go there. When I was younger, I wore pixie cuts and used a curling iron and hairspray to meticulously control every potentially-limp strand. Eventually I grew tired of hair spray fumes and that perpetual sticky feeling so I decided to try a curly perm at the salon. IT CHANGED MY LIFE!!! I have had shoulder-length, voluminous, limp-immune hair for quite a few years now. Because permed hair is technically damaged hair, the texture is courser (aka more grease proof) than my natural hair and so I can go days without shampooing (I co-wash though). And going to the beach with my permed “beach hair” is pure pleasure! Sun, salt, and wind ( and even “hat hair”) have nothing on me now. I can proudly stroll into a seaside restaurant after a day at the beach and no longer be mortified by what is atop my head! Once every 10 months at the salon is all it takes, and I so enjoy the several hours of pampering. I am a proud curly girl (albeit a fake one) and it has done wonders for my confidence as I walk this planet! On another note, I think your curls are gorgeous and you are totally rocking the gray! As I’m sure you’ve heard, the transition is the hardest part, not the 100% gray part. My personal philosophy when making big changes to my appearance is to allow myself the freedom to re-evaluate at any time during the process. Otherwise, I could potentially find myself a prisoner to my own new-found convictions ( yes, I have a horribly checkered past of all-or-nothing thinking and have been known to be my own worst enemy). Ha! So, in my ever-so-humble opinion, it’s ok to go gray and it’s ok to decide to give the color another chance. Whatever you decide, now or in the future, we support you and love you! As for me, at age 55, l’ve gone back to blonde a few times after getting halfway to gray. So, a nice compromise for me right now might be to color just once a year (subject to change without further notice). 🤪 I guess this blond/gray combo will be my own personal version of balayage! Once again, thanks for being real! God bless! ❤️❤️💪💪 Floxendoodle from SoCal

Also I am always in the Political scope, so I must look my best with my grey. I am 3 months in 😲 I have to remind myself to stay committed. P.S. the word "Older" is not on my vocabulary I rather say " wiser" as I become wiser in my age. 😊. I got that word tip from a doctor I follow in youtube. Thank you for your tips ❤

Don’t overthink it. I don’t love my gray while transitioning-I’m 18 months in-but I do love the freedom of not constantly struggling to hide my roots. I’m 46, and sometimes I wish I weren’t graying already, but then I remind myself that the dyed hair wasn’t looking terrific or fooling anybody. You’re on the beach, so get out of your headspace, relax, and focus on the sand and surf instead of strangers’ physical appearances. Be present in the moment and don’t dwell on insecurities. You’ll enjoy yourself much more and boost your confidence.

Oh, beautiful lady, yes, insecurities. ......I'm a year, 5 months cold turkey , CURLY hair, 62 and loving the journey ~ however ~ it's not only liberating, but you are going through this metamorphosis, almost unrecognizable, and with me, it flares up my other insecurities. But I'm with you, never going to color again Word of encouragement : I LOVED the stage you're at with your grow out from looking at my photos from April. Each stage is different, and YOU ARE so unique, beautiful and INSPIRING! I do understand, I came up in the 60-70's, and NO ONE had curly hair, we didn't have the tools there are now. ..I did some bizarre things to have the "long, straight, parted down the middle" hair, and it was still wavy! Silver rocks, and your colors are beautiful 💜💜

Right! I was in high school in the 80's. Flat irons and hair products really didn't exist back then. I would try to straighten my hair with a big round brush and some mousse but would end up with a big head of fluffy mess. Oh well....it makes for some horrible high school photos. And my senior prom photo....OUCH!

Funny how we think people are secure with themselves. For instance, I think you look confident and beautiful in your swim suit. I'm insecure with my weight, I just cut off all my hair into a short pixie (in my bathroom) and realized, holy smoke, its so white! I'm on the fence. Am I ready to give up the illusion of looking younger? Honestly, you are inspiring me and I'm hanging on. Not sure what the future holds, but watching you enjoy and share your life is uplifting. Going gray "early" is a new movement. Of course we all feel not "in the crowd". We sometimes feel like outsiders, having the sticking "brainwashed" mentality and the stigma of looking "old" throwing at us, or the feeling of losing some attraction "worthiness". The cure for all that is : the more younger women go gray the more it will be trendy and celebrated. Women celebrating who they are as nature intended them to be. The "not ok to be who you are" mentality and advertisements will be out of the window for good. Early revolution soldiers... that is who we are . If you had seen one, two or more younger gray haired women on that beach you wouldn't have felt that way right? So, let time takes its course, there will be more of us out there. Give it some time and especially women out there... let's stick to our guns (so-to-speak) and go all the way transitioning towards our brightness :-) No more hiding... FREEDOM all the way! (btw I'm on my 19 month transitioning)

I love and appreciate your honesty, Renee. I'm in the same "mixed-feeling-boat" right now. I'm 54 and 15-months into going gray. For a while, I was excited. Now, every time I look at my hair, I think "old". My hair is mostly straight, almost shoulder-length, I have bangs. The front is white, the sides & back are charcoal, my gray is almost all grown out. I ask myself, "Do I need a drastic new style? Is it too limp? How do I make this work??" It helps a little to pull the sides back and add a clip. I refuse to color again (I don't miss it!); I'm gray for life. The "lack" and struggle is real in these mid-life years.:) I'm trying to find my niche and place in this "getting-older-not-younger" season of life. I do imagine that I'll reach a place where I make friends (and peace) with my "older" self.:) Keep your videos coming! They're encouraging, and I enjoy them!! Lesa from Indiana

We also had a beach vacation this past summer and when I saw pictures afterwards, I said who is that white haired lady! 🥴. But, like you, I will never dye again. And yes, we all have something(s) about ourselves we don’t like. I have always been to short for my weight! 🤪. I tried really hard for almost two months to lose some weight, but at 73 it is a really hard process. So I am just concentrating on eating a bit more healthy and not snacking on salty crispy things! You know what I mean! BTW, you look great in that bathing suit! So, just accept it for what it is! Guess that’s our lesson for today!

Hello Renee, I am a 47 yr old who has fully transition to salt and pepper. I have alot on top but less in the back. I love it now but the transition was very hard. I still have days when I think of dying if will not go back. I think at our age there are not alot of women going gray. I feel the same about eating dessert if you want it. I used to be in fantastic shape but it does take alot of energy and effort. You look amazing by the way! You are so proportional and have beautiful legs and everything. For the first time in my life I am in menopause from cancer treatment and have a bit of a belly. I think nearing 50 our priorities change and we just want to live our best life and not always be worried about the physical stuff. I still do but alot less nowadays. After the final gray transition you will be so happy. Hugs and support sent your way!

I think you look great; you have beautiful skin and the condition of your hair looks so healthy. Your curly hair has transitioned really well; the curls make color difference more subtle. I actually never feel my best at the beach. While I love it, my hair is up in a clip and dries frizzy after I come out of the water, my skin is greasy from lotion, and I feel yucky. When you go home and you're back in your day to day, you'll see how pretty you are and then you can make a decision. Bottom line: do not be hard on yourself. We women do that way too much.

I absolutely love your hair! I also stopped coloring my hair. I thought my hair would come in a salt and pepper gray like my mothers. Nope! I’m a natural redhead. And I’m kinda ending up with variations of blonde to dark . Haven’t colored my hair for 3 years so it is what it is. I’m 71 and am not going to start coloring my hair again. But I have thought about doing low light’s because I’m feeling washed out. I have what I call the normal ( belly pooch) and that is definitely my problem spot. I have been walking and have a stationary bike and mini trampoline I jog on, I also do exercise videos and have started weights to tone up the bat wings and such. Then I think, I’m 71! Why am I worried about what anyone else thinks? Dilemma. But it seems I do.

Hey there! You look awesome! We all have our own insecurities so don't be so hard on yourself. I had to laugh when you mentioned no one else had grey hair on the beach except for 65 year olds that you'd expect to. Well, I started going grey at age 16. I am now 64. The longer my hair was grey the whiter it became and now I'm 100 % white and wavy curly. I am constantly mistaken for younger than I am and also constantly getting asked about my hair. In the interest of full disclosed I am deaf as well. So is don't hear those compliments and most of the time my husbands has to tell me someone is complimenting my me on my white hair. PS: when I was on the beach I wore a wide brimmed hat and huge dark sunglasses. Nobody could tell I had white hair. I'm very pale so I had to cover up and load on the sunscreen.

All my life, I've had natural thick blonde hair straight as a stick. 3 years ago I developed psoriasis and had to start giving myself an injection every 2 months. My blonde hair started turning color...reddish & curly and much thinner!! I was in shock!! The front & sides have stayed blonde, but the back is reddish with blonde streaks. People are always asking me who colors my hair!! My younger sister (from Chemo) and my mother have beautiful silver hair. Why couldn't I have silver hair?? I hate my dark hair! I do like the curl I have on the ends tho! My mother did say there are a lot of blonde mixed in with the red, but aren't we suppose to get gray as we get older???? Unfortunately, I can't go off the injections. Loving your videos from Pa. ❤️🤔❤️

I am now showing and accepting how God created me to be: unique and not like others. When you go to someone needing help, they aren't going to care what color your hair is or when you hand a child their ice cream, they are not going to care what color your hair is. Wow I had same insecurities. I have same curls and silver as you even the darker colors on lower portion. Magic is conditioner! I went to my hair styler and she worked with my curl pattern and gave me a short feminine look. The brown is gone and only a side sweep in front of the curls. Went to work and everyone commented how awesome my style is! Even asked if I had it colored silver! No all natural. Silver fox, sexy, beautiful etc. I own it now...having less of the brown color enhances my silver! The curly girl method also transforms your new growth into soft textures and healthy hair. Beware of all the sun damage at the beach. I live in Florida and know what sun, humidity, heat does to my hair. Even though I got a very short cut, I will continue to grow to mid length. I cannot be without my curls. For now my transition is more beautiful and silver curls rock! I am 6 months into journey. I have not given up the hair color yet, (obviously have thought about it) but I think you look beautiful with the silver.! Especially with your tan! And... you look fit! You have nice tone in your arms with shoulder definition and through the trapezius. One of the first things I noticed! I’m in the fitness industry. Or was. I’m now a caretaker for aging dads. I just lost my mom unexpectedly. She wore natural silver streaks for several years in her 30s with lots of compliments! Like where did you get your hair “frosted” Lol. And then in later years 50- 72 colored her almost all white hair platinum blonde,. But I do get how u feel! Im a little older than u and my body is not quite the same as it was. My hair has thinned, my skin has lost some of its youthful elasticity etc. It’s so not fun feeling like u look older when I feel exactly the same on the inside when I was Idk 30? Only a bit wiser! 😉.

When I'm on the beach, my hair is sweaty and probably has sand and sunscreen in it and it's pulled up, so I don't care. 😂 BTW, your silver looks beautiful with your golden tan!

"exposed"....that's the word I've been looking for. I'm with ya on the bad beach hair. But oh well, it is what it is. Right? So glad to have you on my channel!

Shake it up a little bit! Practice the Curly Girl Method. It would do wonders and give you another focus for a while. Also, a big chop might help you over the hump. Get a makeover at a Bobbi Brown Counter. Marvelous!! Whatever you do, we love you!! Hang in there!!

I quit coloring my hair 6 mos ago. I have shorter, layered hair. I am 64 years old, but I only have a few silver hairs at this point, for whatever reason. I could give a hoot about what others think of me. I am a good person. I am healthy, fit, and i love myself. THAT is my best self. This seems petty.

@@KayKay0813 So true! And I usually don't give a hoot either! LOL. However, it was just very obvious to me looking around that I was in a group by myself. Thanks for the support!

I am 45 and I have been letting my natural color come in for the last 3 years and I'm about 30 percent gray, I did this because my hair wouldn't grow past my shoulders from the damage from the bleach, I do have anxiety from time to time because I work in the corporate world where growing old is looked down upon, I remember older women being judged very harshly from aging men and of course other women who have very strong opinions about aging and competing with younger women ….and thought geez, I need to get out before I'm there...but I'm way too young to get out, I figured I rather have long hair than fried short hair.....I do wear my hair up a lot and compensate with makeup and clothes...it helps a lot...I don't know what the outcome will be with my journey....but I'm just experimenting..I would still like to be sexy and attractive and gray...so to be continued.

Girl......you certainly can be sexy and attractive with grey hair! I am so glad I left the corporate world to start my own business. Have you ever considered leaving your job to start something new?

I like what I do and I am getting better at it as I age and I have got a really awesome schedule going...I do hope to find a way to transform peoples opinions of aging and embrace my aging process gracefully.....I do see other people doing it so I know that I can too

I wouldn't judge my decision because of the beach .....it was important to me to stop because of the chemicals and really don't care what other think or see....

I have gone totally grey in fact my hair is now pure white. I regretted it at first because there is an attitude especially with babyboomers that stopping hair dye is like "giving up on yourself." Or that its a new trend. I have to shrug these comments off. Its the more authentic me.. Its not a new trend It really doesnt make me look older. I try to conjure up the grey haired woman from MASH. I tell myself its another shade of blonde. Lots of respectable men have grey hair and no one makes comments. Grey hair was "in" during Marie Antoinette's day. You can look really stylish with a little bit of effort-- jewelry makeup, hair products, eye brow powder. And often a headband adds a pop of color. It looks more natural because there are more natural highlights. And if I dyed my hair again the grey would show in the roots and almost look like bald spots again. That was yuck.
