I was on the fence about getting the Jhs Colour Box 2 but you just sealed it for me. Thanks a lot for making this video, very informative and clear cut. I’ve got my eye on that compressor too, it really brought all the drums to life in your track. I can tell you really enjoy the process, that’s inspiring 💪🏾 Keep it up!

Thanks man! The keeley compressor is really great too and is more like a studio compressor which makes more sense to me based on the interface vs a one knob compressor. More videos to come in the new year as soon as I can make the time!

I really like what you’re doing here. I have some of the same ideas for “desktop processors”. I was thinking some of my favorite guitar sounds are actually recorded direct to console, so the JHS Colourbox seems perfect. I was considering the Vertex Nyle pedal but unfortunately it’s discontinued it having a preamp/comp/eq. Though the Keeley maybe a better alternative. So do you use the Colourbox as a front end/DI to record direct into your interface? Also the EHX Holy Grail for reverb is to die for on EVERYTHING. drum groups vocals you name it. Especially for that Tame Impala Psych sound.

Yeah I used the Colourbox as the front end preamp! Ran it into the UAD Apollo Twin with no extra gain added on the interface

Killer vid, I have Version 1 of the Colourbox and I love it. Version 2 will allow me to really dial in clean, dirty and super dirty tones with just a few tweaks. Thanks for posting...really helpful!

Can we use ts to ts like instrument cable for soundcard out to color box instead trs to xlr? Have some spare ts to ts already without looking for trs xlr cable. Good video man

I got the Walrus audio deep six for a compressor and though I love it on guitar and perhaps as a mono overhead compressor - the low end for bass and kick just isn't there when you engage it. But I love this idea of building an external signal chain with pedals. The 500 series stuff is cool but $$$. Glad I found this channel!

Samuel Gault I’ve heard good things about that! Some of these pedals are getting so good like the Colour box, that they’re holding up with studio gear and more people are using them in different ways like outboard. The Colour box may never make it to my pedalboard because it’s so versatile and I’ll use it for something in every situation!

@@nickguitarfiorentino Heck yeah! I watched it yesterday. Nice vid! I got my CBOX v2 in the mail a couple days ago. I'm thinking of doing a vid on using it specifically for drums. I put it on my kick drum and it's pretty incredible how good it sounds.

I'm trying to do this right now! Such great timing for me to find this haha. Currently trying to figure out the signal path leaving Logic and my Scarlett, kinda struggling but I'm gonna do more research to get mine sounding as good as yours ;)

Faiz H I used to do guitar DI reamping through a Scarlett 2i2 into logic! You need a reamp box to make it easy/accurate. I used to use a DIYRe L2A (reamp box) with an TRS to XLR cable coming out of the Scarlett into guitar pedals. You could also use a Radial ProRMP reamp box. Basically, you have to set your output from logic into a reamp box, then the input has to get scaled down to a guitar pedal level, then has to get re recorded into logic. Does that make sense?

do you get extra noise from the colour box? im trying to do something similar but i get a lot of noise when I drive the preamp even a bit

I do get some extra noise but I think that’s typical of driving a preamp. You can always check your signal chain and eliminate all other variables and make sure cables or non isolated power supplies aren’t causing the noise. Also if there is noise check if it’s there in your mix, it may be too low for you to hear in context!

nice video man, but could you please help me out with this setup? im struggling HARD and I cant find anything that explains how to hook it all up. I have a re-amp box and the strymon deco but cant figure out what to plug what into what and how to set it up in the mixer. thanks!

Pt. 1 so you’re gonna need to use 1 TRS make to XLR female cable to connect them. You’re gonna go out of the line output 1 in the back of your interface. Then what you do is set it in your DAW (whatever track you are reamping) set that track to the output you choose (in this case line output 1). So that part you are sending the audio to the reamp box. Pt 2. You take a guitar cable from the reamp box to the pedal and whatever effects you wanna use. Then come back to your interface and set it back up in your DAW as a new track. Let me know if that works!

@@nickguitarfiorentino for some reason it doesnt work. it must be me haha. so technically I use two guitar cables, one coming from the re amp box to the pedel and then one going into the input on the pre sonus from the pedal, right? btw really appreciate the help.

@@MattKellyMusic are you taking the output of the presonus into the reamp box? You’ll need that TRS to XLR female cable from the interface to the reamp box, otherwise no signal is being sent to the reamp box

I came right out of my Apollo Twin duo. I was sending line level and there’s so many stepped levels of gain on the Colour box that it takes line level very well! I’ve been thinking about using it as a mobile preamp for my microphone in the next video.

Well, I do have an Apollo Twin as well and I want to start using my guitar pedals as an outboard gear for production, I own a BigSky, a Cali76 compressor and the Colour box v2 seems to be the next one on the list. Agustin Lencina the Cali 76 is a monster compressor that’s gonna be so cool! As long as those pedals don’t slow down your process that much they’ll be really great and high quality outboard gear. You should make a video too! Cheers

@@nickguitarfiorentino definitely have one. Use it while tracking vocals. More times than not I'm reamping tracks through it and using it as an EQ. I have tracked some of the fuzzier tones from it on guitar. All in all, I dig it. I like using it as a preamp, a physical EQ, and for guitar/bass tones. It is on almost everything I create, even if just for subtle coloring.

@@nickguitarfiorentino its my last gain stage technically speaking. As far as gain goes on my board: Rowin amp pusher, always on in zero gain setting just to add a slight grit sound. EHX Dual OD Overlord, my main OD and on to the Colourbox which acts as an EQ/last gain colorization stage. I also use a Rat Muff Nano so instead of the EHX Dual OD, one of these 3 is on as my main high gain drive! So its the Amp Pusher and Colourbox thats doing the “colorization”!

Thanks for watching! Yes I’m taking them out of my computer, sending them into the pedals for mixing, then back into the computer! The same idea as using any outboard recording gear with your mixing. Let me know if you have more questions about how to do it too!

@@electricjaguarbaby234 so basically you have to send audio from your interface to the pedal, out of the pedal and back into the interface. On my interface I have a line output. Find whatever type of output (could be monitor, could be line level signal) your recording interface has, then get the appropriate cable for 1/4 inch and run it into the JHS and back into the recording interface. That’s where you start!

First thing you need to talk about is the camera you’re using. That thing is crisp and looks great! Also that Tobacco burst Gibson semi hollow is the business👍🏾

Thank you for the kind words! In this video I was using my iPhone 11 Pro Max before I got a camera, I think it was good lighting. Now in my other videos I’m using a sony a6400 and got a good handle on filming so if you like the quality on this video, be sure to check out my other videos, and my upcoming ones! I love my Gibson Midtown Custom, I put Suhr Thornbuckers in it and now it’s super versatile and sounds great!

@@nickguitarfiorentino Man the combo of your phone and the lighting makes everything look really good! I think people sleep on semi hollows. I have a D’Angelico semi hollow, my only one, and it’s fantastic! I can go from clean to mean with it. It’s far more versatile than it appears.

@@leogolive I agree, people definitely sleep on semi hollows! They have a wide range of use and different tones you can get. This video was in my old room that had like 5 different windows and it got a ton of light! Can’t beat natural light when you have that many windows.

@@eldyko I take use send 3-4 on a track i want to reamp (either my output of that track or an insert 3-4) out of my UAD Apollo Twin, then that is a physical 1/4 inch cable to my pedal, then out of my JHS into my Input 1. Then I create a new track. The new track has input 1 (which is coming from the jhs pedal). Does that answer it enough? There can be more to it depending on your DAW but the basic part is, make the track you are Reamping go to your output, then the new track takes the new input.
