I grew up in VA. Locals say "cut" for both on & off. It sounded wrong to me at first too. I came to the conclusion that cut refers to the flipping of the switch.

And ain't nobody ever been confused about what to do when I've told them to cut something on or off. Not even my Yankee/Polish friend from Chicago. The quick clip of the guy that was having a hard time with zoom...the judge couldn't see him....actually was crazier than that. There was a miscommunication. The judge should have told him she couldn't see 'him,' but could see his ceiling. All he had to do was flip the phone down. And, it got even wilder when she made him come in for the hearing. Check it out. lol

Hanging onto the phrase “public servants” exposes the primary fault of the sovcit philosophy. It demonstrates that sovcits believe life serves language rather than the reality, which is the other way around. The notion that there is some particular code word or phrase that absolves any wrongdoing is magical thinking. It’s as if they expect cops to hear them say the pass phrase and respond, “you got me, you’re free to go.”
