Agree I was 6 years old when I seen total recall on showtime back in the 90s, it shows how old we are because a lot of kids stream this movie on Netflix or other streaming services which is much easier instead of looking at a TV guide.

I'm dating myself here, but I remember seeing Star Wars in the theatre as kid and turning my head away from the screen at the dismembered arm in the Cantina scene. I can't imagine how I would've reacted to the spike thing through the head in the Rekall room on Mars. That is one of the grossest things in all cinema.

One of my favorite films with Arnold in his prime. I won't get into the debates on whether it was real or a dream or which memories Arnold should've retained before, during, and after Rekall. I'll simply say it's nice to have you back, Joy.

When the Rekall guy describes the secret agent program he says "you get the girl, kill the bad guy, and save the planet". Which is exactly what happens. On the other hand he's dreaming about Mars and the girl before he goes to Rekall. So it's impossible to say for sure if it's real or the program.

But when Arnold is at Rekall and is asked at 5:07 (by the lady who's about to do the memory implant) "How do you like your women?", the selected brunette that comes up on the screen after he answers has Melina's face. So why would Rekall have her face on file as part of a preselected program??
@platinumspider7859
@platinumspider7859 Жыл бұрын
@@carlosurdaneta4361 The faces are originally generic computer made faces, only when Quaid is passing out do you see Melina's face clearly, he see's what he wants like the rest of the movie.
@Cau_No

There are still more hints that it is a dream. The "alien artifacts" presented on the monitors at Rekall before the implant are actually the concept art for the reactor seen later. Also, the guy appearing on Mars with the read pill was seen before in the Rekall advert on Earth. What he says also happens exactly afterwards, we get the story 'spoiled' a second time. On the other hand, all the scenes with Cohaagen and Richter discussing should not be in the story, as Quaid would not see them in his memory (except they are things he envisionied happening later) Great way to keep the debate going.

The scene with the doctor guy from recall makes me believe it's all a dream. It's implied he's one of Cohagen's guys, but why would Cohagen want Quade to take a pill? Assuming it will knock him out or kill him, but that doesn't make sense, Cohagen's plan of Quade infiltrating the rebels is working. So that leads me to believe the doctor was legitimately from recall there to save Quade. So Arnie is sitting in a recall chair possibly dead.

I saw this in 90 in the theater, I was 4, and it’s one of my earliest memories. All the locations in the movie looked like the mall I say the movie too, Stonestown galleria in SF, and even though this was filmed in New Mexico, there was a lot of concrete and neon, a YES burger and a Tower Records, and as a child I always thought Total Recall was just filmed around the mall...

When I first saw this in the cinema, me and my friends had the exact same debate everyone has - is it a dream or is it real? After watching it a LOT of times, I've come to the conclusion that it is a dream. There are a lot of subtle, and not so subtle, things that point to that conclusion, that you pick up on multiple viewings. As others have mentioned, the line "Oh blue skies on Mars. That's a new one" is probably the decider. Great film either way, glad you enjoyed it :)

There's another film called Total Recall that came out about 2012, but do not in any way treat it as a sequel/reboot or continuation of this story. I think they just were making a sci-fi movie for that one and found out they could get the "Total Recall" name to cash in on it.

I love how this movie gets you guys talking about weither it is or not a dream... but the one thing someone pointed out that I didn't realize until I rewatched it as an adult. While at ReKall the lady Dr, gave the guy with the glasses something, he reads it and says "That's new! Blue sky on Mars." It was very subtle and can be over looked if not paying close attention... It potentially could be a dream and the light at the end of the movie that got brighter could be of him getting Labotimized... But that's all up for discussion. lol Great reaction. :)

More than likely it is how the movie said. Because his wife and his coworkers acted strange before he went to recall for the memory. Which showed they were out there to make sure the memory worked that Cohagen put in him. Unless the movie starts inside a dream and even the idea of going to recall is part of the dream/memory. But that’s unlikely!
@TheTitandog70
@TheTitandog70 Жыл бұрын
That could be possible theory that we never actually see him awake, that imprint incorporated the dream also, because the imprint ego trip memories have to trick the mind into believing it actually real. Because subconscious he knows he not a spy, but present with situation the subconscious mind will start to believe it. Quaid could been so unhappy with his life once mind was presented with this alternative life, his mind jump to embrace and reject anything else. Hence you notice all the parts of his old life he killed, his friends from work, his wife, there all enemies. He ends up killing them all and ending his old life. That makes this movie so great, it works on so many levels

It can't be a dream because there is no way for him to remember events that happened in a different location. Like the bad guys having a conversation in a car while tracking him. Even if the memory was implanted he would still need to be in the scene.

There's a difference between a dream and a memory, you can dream of things you aren't involved in. A Failed memory implant left him in a delusion and he imagines those scenes the way you can imagine a conversation between 2 people. The key phrase in this movie is "A blue sky on Mars" from the Rekall tech.

The thing that convinces me that this is all a dream is the line from Rekall: "That's a new one: Blue Sky on Mars." Also, if it is not a dream, why are they using Melina's face at Rekall? I think Quaid makes it the lady from his dream in his mind and in the end he is labotomized. But that doesn't ruin the movie for me at all. It's a hell of a trip.
@julianmarco4185
@julianmarco4185 Жыл бұрын
Those could be the director introducing some clues to make us question it. Things like: "Blue Skies on Mars" could have been a random generated name. The second is that: just before we see Melina, Quaid is tranquilized and we see his POV, so he could have been hallucinating the same way he dreams every night or obsessed over going to Mars. There are plenty of clues that prove a contrary: 1) Why is Quaid dreaming about the same girl every night? 2) why is his mind so obsessed over Mars and moving there? 3) Quaid is married for 8 years, yet his house has no photos of them at all. 4) Quaid is married for 8 years, yet Lori acts like his newlywed wife... 8 years is a long time to make that marriage a little stale. In the end it could be either, but I don't know why he liked to dream about getting the stuffing beaten out of himself by thugs so many times instead of one-shooting them all like a real secret agent. But the little twist makes it interesting...

@@julianmarco4185 Yes, I agree. I think from the commentary track (which is one of my guilty plesures) Veerhoven did say he intended to make it ambiguous so the viewer could decide for themselves which reality was real. I don't think it's unusual for someone to fantasize about a more exciting ife than the one they're in. Though I don't know if that's a sign of depression or just boredom. My favourite Arnold line from any of his movies to this day is "See you at the party, Richter!"

I mean...maybe...maybe... it could be real. We know at the beginning of the movie what Rekall is, what it does. We know Mars and Cohagen exist. We know that there is a violent revolution taking place. We never see any pictures of Quaid and his wife. He dreams about the same woman every night... every night... We see Cohagen try to keep his goons off Quaid but they ignore him and they end up getting killed. So they were clearly not aware of Hauser's plan. Quaid is married for 8 years and he still walks to work... When you include a machine that can make memories you can basically do anything. Lori could have been Quaid's lover on Mars and she got erased. His best friend could have been his uncle or something... There are a lot of hints that it could be either way.

YES!! LOVE THIS MOVIE!! Before Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as Douglas Quaid, Patrick Swayze, William Hurt, Matthew Broderick, Michael Douglas, Christopher Reeve, Richard Dreyfuss, James Caan, and Dennis Quaid were considered for the role. Producer Dino De Laurentiis bought the rights to the movie for a 1985 release. The original film's director, David Cronenberg, was going to make this as a psychological thriller rather than a Sci Fi Action Adventure film. The screenwriters Ronald Shusset and Gary Goldman protested the idea and wanted to do "Raiders Of The Lost Ark Goes To Mars." Dan O'Bannon even wrote several drafts of the script in order to stick close to the original source material. Tensions between De Laurentiis and Cronenberg got so nasty, Cronenberg left the project and De Laurentiis sold the rights to Carolco, the same company that produced RAMBO, Terminator 2, Cliffhanger, And Cutthroat Island. It was the most expensive independent film ever made, $75 million dollars. The movie was filmed at Churibiscu Studios Mexico City. The architect you see in the film, not including Mars, is 100% real, namely the Subway station. The VFX were done by Dream Quest Images, Metro Light Studios and Industrial Light And Magic. It was a box office success, making $276 million dollars. It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Evidence that what's happening to him is fake: - The description of what is to happen on his Ego Trip is exactly what happens to him, in detail. - The woman they select to put into his Ego Trip looks exactly like Melina. - The title of his Ego Trip is "Blue Skies on Mars", and the image on the operator console looks like the reactor cavern and heating elements he encounters later. - For a professional agent, his wife's shooting at short rage is awful, as is the performance of the first agents to try and pick him up after his visit to Rekall. - His length of survival unprotected in the Mars atmosphere is absurd. Evidence that what's happening to him is real: - He dreams of Melina before he ever went to Rekall. - There is some sense before he goes to Rekall that he's being watched. - (the biggest one) There are scenes in the movie that don't include him, such as Cohagen upbraiding Richter for screwing things up. To me, both sets of evidence are conclusive and compelling, in that they don't make any sense if it's the other way around. Much of the evidence that it's real cannot be explained if it's actually fake, and much of the evidence that it's fake cannot be explained if it's actually real. Which means you get to believe whatever you want.

It's a fun movie, but in reality Mars is more like the Moon, not Earth. The gravity is very low, the atmosphere barely exists, there's no magnetic field to divert radiation from space, and the sun is so dim it's barely there. There's absolutely no way to make Mars habitable like Earth. Whatever you'd do to live on the Moon, the same sort of thing is what you'd do for Mars.

Firstly Joy: how are u now? I sent you nice vibes daily ❤. Secondly, this film, based on the novel “ we can remember it wholesale,” by the late great Phillip k Dick is better today than it was in the past: we’re closer to doing this yearly 😊. I agree w Joy: it really happened. My evidence: the semi-bald sweats (a dream man doesn’t sweat that’s y Arnold kills him)

The general consensus is that it was all the implanted ego trip. At the start when he's at rekall the young guy looks at the implant and says "Blue sky on Mars, that's a new one.." It is weird though that we see events where Quaid is not present but I guess it's necessary for storytelling.

Supposedly, in an early draft of the script, it was explained why the Martians built their oxygen-producing machine... like humans raised in the planet's atmosphere, the Martians were psychic, but their powers were far greater, allowing them to see millennia into the future. They saw their own unavoidable demise, as well as the race of beings who would settle their world, despite not being able to breathe its atmosphere. So, in a completely selfless gesture, the last few generations of their species built the machine.

Is what is happening to Quaid just a fantasy taking place in his head while he is strapped in a chair at Rekall? I was long resistant to the idea myself. But over the years, I've become persuaded that this is almost certainly the case. Even so, the film is sufficiently ambiguous that people can argue back-and-forth about it and never resolve the question absolutely.

As Joy said, he woke up before they implanted the secret agent memory. Knocked him out. So those memories wouldn't have been any part of his knowledge, he was knocked out

No, him waking up is part of the memory implant but before he goes out the first time the tech says "That's a new one, a blue sky on Mars." That shows that the rest of the movie is dream.

Great movie. You should see other great Arnold Schwarzenegger action movies The Running Man 1987 (A great underrated movie Came out same time as Predator ) , Conan The Barbarian 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger breakout role. End of Days 1999 and The Sixth day and Twins .Don't watch the 2011 remake it is complete trash. See you in the party Victor :)

This argument has been going on for decades. It's not a dream. The writer wasn't sophisticated enough to pull that off. It's as simple as it is shown.
