In this one, we did a repair on some stainless steel duct work on an evaporator. We use the Miller maxstar to weld this one up, and this proved to be a very challenging job. It passed a vacuum test, and the customer was back up and running. Hope you guys enjoy, and thanks for watching!

I have done a temporary/permanent repair on a exhaust setup for a diesel engine. Made an aluminum spacer where the gasket goes and sandwiched the spacer with gaskets. This causes the accordion pipe to shorten. Then where there the accordion pipe is cracked the outer rings can be pinched together and welded around the circumference.

That’s what I was thinking, a lot more permanent repair. although if one cracked, I’m sure others aren’t far behind

I WOULDVE ATTEMPTED A SPOT WELD ALL ACROSS THE CRACK, THEN RAN A FULL BED OVER THAT.. THIN STUFF IS TESTY, WHICH IS WHY I ALSO INVESTED IN A COLD SPOT WELDER..

If you ever have to do another one like this, i have 2 ideas that may have help or maybe not. We do a very small version of this (less than 6 in diameter) expansion joint. 1.) you can try arcing up on the filler wire off the start and try to keep your arc on just the wire and use lay wire technique. 2.) a slightly bigger cup size on your tig torch would give you better gas coverage and allow you to stick your tungsten out a little further and keep good gas on it. Great content as usual!! Can’t wait for the next one!

I actually did use the lay wire technique, but I didn’t try lighting up on the rod. Good idea. I think the larger cup size is also a good suggestion. I was thinking that when I was welding. One of these days I’m going to invest in some furick cups. I appreciate the suggestions, and agree. Thanks for watching!

I’ve seen and installed those bellows on evac systems in the hi tech industry. They typically had flanged connections so you could swap them out easily, if needed.

Nice work. That thin stuff can really piss a guy off haha. I have not had very good luck repairing bellows in the past we just replace them but I’m sure that will get them by until they can get a new one. Parts are hard to get for everyone right now.

Not trolling, but what about Oxy-acetylene brazing it with 56% silver, or soldered it with a propane torch and some Stay-brite #8? Since it's in a vacuum, it doesn't need to be silly strong. I've had to repair some OLD evaporator coils, where the U-bends were more like membranes, than solid copper. (Victor and Uniweld make micro torches)

I can honestly say I have never tried either of those things on Stainless steel. I’ve never seen that done either. May be worth some research. It’s a good suggestion, I just know nothing about brazing with solder on stainless steel. I’ll have to research it. Thanks for watching!

nice job and was wondering how hot that duct gets if you couldnt weld it with silcon bronze , it flows real easy on stainless and ive used it on exhaust systems and real thin stainless heat exchange piping . not trying to be a smartass and it seems you been in the trade awhile and you know your stuff but this was the first time you knew about whips for your stingers ? they do make a special whip cable connector thats smaller in size and it fits into the normal size connectors tweeco and i believe lenco makes them also .and those 200 amp tweeco stingers suck, their springs are real tight and at the end of a day you might wind up with carpel tunnel syndrome wherea s the 250 tweecos open alot easier and just more comfort even though slightly bigger but really not that much love your channel im subscribed and ive been pro welding since 1980 and im an oldtimer already ! but im not packing it in yet still love what we do in the iron game .

I’ve never welded stainless steel with silicon bronze. May be something to try if I have to do another one. I’ll have to run a practice test with that for fun. As far as the whip goes. I’ve welded with one a lot, but we always built our own. I didn’t know they sold them already put together. Pretty handy. Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!

Look on Norco’s website.(www.Norco-inc.com) Or maybe Amazon? Allweldproducts.com has a 10’ #1 whip for $99. They may have other options as well. Thanks for watching!

No argon purge! Stainless is reactive to oxygen. I know yo know that.
@Freedomfabrication777
@Freedomfabrication777 4 ай бұрын
No, no argon purge. The expansion joint is welded in place. To be able to purge that part from the inside you would have to have a tanker truck full of Argon to be able to fill the whole evaporator, the chest, the fans, all the duct work, and eventually the expansion joint. There’s no way to isolate just that section. Sometimes for a repair like this you aren’t able to do it 100% by the book. I know without a doubt it sugared on the inside, but to be able to get the equipment up and running, it was necessary. Thanks for watching!
