Otter Creek & Rio Grande

The OC&RG is moving further East to a little junction that will be called Maroon Creek. In this update I discuss the track plan and some changes to the original design. Truth be known, I'm still making changes even as recent as this weekend!

I really enjoyed the video. A couple of points I think might be helpful. IMHO that section you highlighted in the first part of the video would be a great place for some ceiling to floor cliff face/ river gorge scenery. I think it would be effective to block the view of the workbench and the layout in that section form that side of the asle. I also would remind you that stock pens are great see-through structures. Thank for sharing, you're very helpful. Bob

I agree, John Allen's G&D is one of my biggest inspirations. That particular location has been one of the few areas where I have a good idea of what I want the scenery to look like. I'm just not sure if having it go all the way up through the valance will work. The High Line will disappear from the Work Bench side, and cling to the side of the cliff on the entry door side. I won't know for sure until I have the spline up, and a really good idea where the river(s) flows through and disappears. Floor to ceiling is definitely a goal, and in another location on the opposite end of staging. Thanks Bob!

I agree you really don't have to take the scenery to the valance, only a few inches above eye level. After all, Us and most of our visitors are there to see the trains and the scenery has to work when you're viewing from the Frying Pan area too. I'm eager to see how you work it out. Bob@@OtterCreek

It's cool that you left yourself a lot of space to fudge things around. And, wye not! It's looking awesome with all the sweeping curves and a notable shortage of tracks running parallel to the edges of plywood. Nice work, Nice thought process, Nice guitar break Dennis.🤗 🚂Lawrence

Thanks for the update, Dennis. Enjoying following along with your vision for the railroad. One thing, I am quite a bit jealous of that workshop and the rolling carts underneath it, what a great idea. Wish I had the space. 😁

Thanks Paul! Yes, I'm very glad that I spent the time and money to build the dual work benches. They have come in very handy.

I like the operating plan at Maroon Creek. Having a train come down the branch and work the yard and then return is sound. The single track staging is all that is required, I presume operate once a day. At one point you wondered if the #8 templates were available from fast tracks. I'm assuming you found them. I have both #8 and #7 templates and presume the printed versions would be available too (I use them in Sn2). I feel few railroads used wye turnouts (or would avoid them as much as possible) and our model track looks better if we use turnouts with straight legs for the main. You will have many mainline trains go through that turnout, but only once a day does the branch train need to go through the turnout. Best to have the Mainline be straight. I think using one leg of the wye for interchange track is believable and OK. I'd try to keep the number of tracks in Maroon Creek as few as possible. Fewer tracks the more narrow gauge it looks. I've not watched all of your videos, but the foam sides to your spline caught my attention. I presume they are sides added to your masonite splines, not foam splines. Anyway, enjoying videos...thanks for sharing...

My main concerns are (1 will the trains operate smoothly. (2 does the track work look pleasing to my eye. (3 does the location facilitate interesting operations without being to tedious to operate. Keeping those things in mind I'm willing to break any "rules" the prototype railroads may have adhered to, especially since I'm not trying to model a specific prototype. The OC&RG is the proverbial railroad of lies!! LOL As it stands right now, I have built a #8 wye (on paper) for the tail heading off in to staging along with a #8 standard that will help create the runaround/interchange track. I've built #8 standard turnouts for the other two legs. I finished up the last of 12 turnouts yesterday, so tomorrow I plan on actually putting some track together and seeing how it all works. It has always been my intent to keep my mainline #8 straight through turnouts whenever there is a siding. Space has made that difficult in a few places. There are two locations where I had to custom build & or(tweak) curved turnouts to facilitate the space. So far everything has operated well, but I'm sure the prototype would never have considered it. Concessions due to space is always a battle, but we do the best we can! LOL, no foam spline anywhere. It's all 1/4" Masonite. Thanks for watching! ~Dennis

Have you thought about just using a turn out, either left or right at the wye? Gives you different starting points and radius to start with. Real live situation on my the RR I am working at 2 of there wyes

As it stands right now, I have built a #8 wye (on paper no jig) for the tail heading into staging along with a #8 normal switch that will create the runaround to the interchange track. I've built #8 normal turnouts for the other two legs. I finished up the last of the 12 turnouts this weekend. I hope to get some track-work done next weekend.
