I think offensive players will have to start losing their careers due to full force knee shots for this targeting nonsense to be reevaluated. Either that or start looking at offensive targeting as well. If you drop your head as a runner, you're intentionally putting yourself at risk and perhaps even initiating the helmet to helmet contact. If the defensive player is going for a shoulder to chest tackle, and the offensive player lowers his head...it's the offensive player who caused the contact.
@davidrooks3274

@@davidrooks3274 There's also a difference between a defenseless player and a runner ducking in anticipation of the hit/tackle. Ruling should go both ways. Consistency.
@davidrooks3274
@davidrooks3274 4 жыл бұрын
@@stonemedia8901 let's go through this play by play, the first play?? not targeting, not to the head, was a good hit. the 2nd play, very close, not going for the ball and hit him high, debatable, but a good call, the 3rd play(and this is what I think you are talking about) receiver drops his head and there is head to head contact, but this is why I think it's a good call, the receiver is focused on catching the ball, the defensive player is focused on the receiver, hit him a bit lower, he literally has 1 step to protect himself, the 4th, the defensive player is going for the ball, not a good call, not targeting. so 3 out of the 4 are good calls. when I played I always went for the numbers, best way to make sure you make the stop, if the 3 that I believe ARE targeting would have went for the number, not targeting would have been called, bottom line, you HAVE to learn to play within the rules, the rules say no going for the head, what should you do???? not go for the head
@stonemedia8901
@stonemedia8901 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidrooks3274 I think your missing what I'm implying the rule should stipulate. I agree that many of the defensive hits are clean and legal. I just think when a running back or receiver ducks his head down to where his "number" is, he's no longer considered a defenseless player. Thus targeting is overruled in those cases.

This garbage is ruining football. The players know the risks. Let them play the damn game like it's supposed to be played. I don't think targeting should apply to any play except for when a WR isn't looking and it's helmet to helmet or a QB is sliding and it's helmet to helmet. Half the time they call targeting just because it's a big hit, even if the defender leads with their shoulder. BS.

There needs to be two classes or targeting. First degree and second degree, second degree being the iffy ones where it is VERY "debatable" on the intention or even the contact of head to head. First degree would be obvious targeting. Second degree would be delegated with a warning and first degree would be an ejection.

Bloodcaine Tell that to the hundreds of former players suffering from symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as a result of repeated trauma to the head during their football career, from superstars like Ken Stabler, Earl Morrall, Frank Gifford and Andre Waters, each of whom had CTE confirmed after death. How about the living stars showing some symptoms of the disease. Men like Bernie Kosar, Jamal Lewis, Jim McMahon, Tony Dorsett and Brett Favre. How about the thousands of former players listed in more than 40 separate lawsuits over football related injuries that the NFL settled with in 2013. Or maybe you'd just like to talk to the families of Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, both of whom took their own lives rather than live with the debilitating effects of CTE. Player safety has to be paramount, especially the more we learn about the causes and long-lasting effects of what used to be routine trauma. If it's not, then our perspective about what's truly important in this life is all screwed up.

From someone not from the US but who likes very much American Football I can tell you from the outside that the initiative to address the issue of 'targeting' is long overdue and should be welcome. In the long run it will save the game and protect the long term health of the players. Yes, referees will make some mistakes, as highlighted here, but in the end it will improve the sport. For me the key litmus test is "would he have put his head into the player in that way if he didn't have a helmet?". If the answer is no then it is reckless and should be called targeting. In the Purdue-Minnesota the tackle was perfectly fair and well intentioned, though strong. The last one (Penn-Michigan) also was a genuine attempt to catch the ball and should have been reversed. I actually agree with the BYU call, even though the contact was glancing it was a cheap shot and he would not have gone in like that if he didn't have a helmet.

American Football be like: I need my players to be as big as possible, as strong as possible, as fast as possible, and hit as hard as possible! NCAA be like: You can't hit someone that hard...Its not safe.. I was taught: You can do one of two things... Make the Play Or Make the Hit.. You can never go wrong with making the hit

This targeting rule has gone too far! I know they're trying to protect the players, but this rule has gone too far.

how was the PSU one possibly targeting? not only was it obvious that he was just going for the interception, he didn't even make helmet-to-helmet contact. his shoulder just accidentally hit the defender's head

That BYU one was laughably bad. It looks like it real time, but watching over and over at multiple angles, how the hell is that targeting. Absolute joke. The PSU one could be enforced because he does actually make forcible contact to the helmet, but it shouldn't, because like they said, he was going for the ball.

There's still no way in hell that Smitty did that shit on purpose. He was going for the ball. I went to high school with him, he doesn't do that. Im talking about the last clip, the penn state game. He was clearly trying to intercept.

Penn State vs Michigan: 100% not a targeting foul on # 47 of the defense. He was trying to intercept the ball. He was trying to make the play. Terrible call by the official.
