You're right! Sometimes we mothers are hard pressed to take our husbands position when dealing with the children! Many years ago I dated a single mom from Barbados. We moved in together and I was the de-facto stepfather to her daughter. Her real dad was semi-involved. He had her one, sometimes two weekends/month. But I was the one that was with her on a daily basis. I played with her, cooked for her, cleaned after her, drove her around, read her bedtime stories, and all that. One of the last incidents in our relationship was when her daughter was being a little brat in school. The teacher called and explained that she was involved in an incident with another girl and was being disrespectful to the teacher. I went to the school to pick her up and on the way home, in the car, I got a little stern with her. I was angry and disappointed and I raised my voice at her. I didn't think I was out of line because she needed to learn some things. When we got home her mom was furious with me. She explained clearly that it was not my place and that disciplining her was between her and her ex. After that, it went downhill. I just felt like I had all the responsibilities of a real father but none of the benefits. Her daughter and her mom would never see me as her real father. At most, I could be the fun uncle but still had to take care and pay for both of them. I am sure there are situations where this arrangement can work but for me, it didn't. I just didn't see the point of it. I decided to end it and look for someone I could start my own family with.

It's a hard hard thing. My buddy Jay got with a single mother, and he pretty much adopted the girl in his own head. Treated her like his own daughter, emotionally and all. The relationship was doomed early on, because she's a nutjob and manufactured drama all the time. The psych diagnosed her with Borderline Personality Disorder, not that she cares. Anyways, she used her daughter as a weapon. Basically used his emotional connection with the kid to hurt him. That's the worst part about dating a single mom and being committed: It goes south, they use the kid against you.

This was enlightening I've lived that scenario for thirteen years only to have my ex-wife run off with another man fresh out of prison from doing ten years in prison. Now first of all that sister is fine and I think that is the reason her replies are what they are in my opinion. I took care of her and that child for all those years I dealt with that disrespectful child from six to eighteen and that same child was one of the reasons along with the adultery as to why we are no longer together, and it's funny she was also looking somewhat like her. And every reason Kevin said is why I did not want children with her, she cried and boo hooed swearing she wanted to be with me forever once we found out we were pregnant only to leave me for a dude who was fresh out from doing ten years they had a five-year run he got their home raided by the DEA went back in for six years and now is home again on a tether and she waited for him. A lot of women these days don't appreciate the good man they want the bad boy 🙄
