Buddy, I have watched tons of videos and couldn't figure out what a mode was. With you, it took me just to watch your video and... bang everything came to place. You're not only one of the top-5 greatest guitarists but you are the greatest teacher. Cheers from your native Greece...

Hahaha! I do the same thing. It's the only way I could figure out to visualize the intervals. My favorite cat lover. Can't wait for some new Gus G. material, nudge, nudge.

Rule of thumb: Rock, Metal, Blues, Country: Use modes to follow the chord progression Jazz: Use modes to construct the chords, but change the scale to the major or minor of the root of the chord (playing "over" the chords) Classical: the melodic line doesn't necessarily follow the chords (playing "across" the chords)

The only way the modes will make sense it seems is if you understand basic chord construction, hopefully to start up through 7th chords, but the 4 triads are a must. The modes aren't super confusing but sadly one video isn't adequate space to give them a proper treatment and puts an undue burden on the supremely talented Gus! Or any teacher for that matter. Basic intervals and chord construction is a revelation for your playing and an achievable one.

OMG Thank you. It has taken me forever to get confirmation that it's the same scale and you are just playing from a different tonal center. This also suggests that you do not really "use" modes. You play in a "tonal center", which is a note in your scale. And so, your mode is dictated by the choice of scale and tonal center. For me, a mode doesn't feel like something you use. It feels like a description of what you happen to be doing. Furthermore, if you are playing melody in the chords of your progression, then there isn't really any choice at all, as you've already made them. So really it seems to boil down to where you want to add melody relative to the root note. That's kind of the same thing. But, it seems the way everybody explains it they make it seem like there are more variables there than there really are. it's the same deal with the major and minor chords of a scale. Pick a note in your scale and, relative to that, you will either have a major or minor third. Done. So all this stuff is just ways of talking about ONE SCALE.
