Modifying OSO Barbell Collars and Generic Amazon Collars With Magnets

I spent some time today adding magnets to my collars so I can just slap them to the side of the rig. With mixed results, but overall I'm pretty happy and I know what to do the second time around.
Magnets I used:

Note: I have no certifications or special knowledge. I was not an athlete at any point in my life, I played some tennis in high school, but mostly I have just found some real enjoyment in lifting and fitness in the last 5 or so years and thought I'd share some info about stuff I like. If you're looking for being a top tier athlete or crushing PRs, I am not what you want, I am overweight most of the year, have bad ankles, struggle to get up and work out about half the time, have an average deadlift, a below average squat, a middling bench, and a weak overhead press, and am ok with that. In regards to the brittleness, do you think a 2 part epoxy would be better? In my experience epoxy does better with sudden jolts because it gels a little as it dries. Excellent video nonetheless! I'm thinking about giving this a shot on my cerakote collars. I was also considering magnetic tape along the perimeter of the collar and seeing how well that holds up.

You're absolutely right, I think epoxy would solve that issue. For whatever reason I got super glue in my head, but I use epoxy on knife handles specifically because of the jolts. I might try to pop those magnets out and use some epoxy. Thanks

How have your modified collars held up 1 year later? thinking of doing this myself, and heard other methods without recessing the magnets in the collars typically have been falling off within 6 months.

The recessed with the epoxy are holding up great, the only change I'd make is better magnets. Other than that, no slips from the aluminum collars

@@AverageDadReviewsFitness great. So you believe it was the strength of the magnets that failed that 2 collars, not how it was recessed? I'm asking because I have lock jaw oly 2 collars, which aren't very heavy. I'd prefer the smaller profile if it would work.

@@kylebeng The main issue was that I didn't get a strong enough magnet, I added 2 more (for a total of 4) all recessed and they stuck fine, I also have some larger magnets coming, not that this is on my radar again, so I'll try those and let you know. I think though had I bough a better magnet from the start it wouldve been fine.

Finally cracked the code today, Menards sells neodymium magnets just under 10 mm two of those are enough to stick the collar to the rack no problem.

@@AverageDadReviewsFitness thanks for following up. thats pretty sweet. too bad i dont have one near me. and $7 to ship :-/ If the magnets worked for your first collar, it might do ok for me. I think each collar is 1/4 lb but ill have to weigh them.
