Great tip using the razor blade for separating the cover from the pickup. I'm gonna use that one.

As with any repair or modification to your equipment, it is best to use your best judgement and skill level to determine your qualifications or abilities to perform the work. I hope this helps. Thanks for the post!

so - i tried this yesterday and the way you show this works really well. it was a bit of a pain to get the razor blade between the cover and pickup though. i have used a 100 watts soldering iron. thanks again.

Hey Acronso - Thanks for your questions. 1) You don't have to use wax but it is highly recommended so you don't have issues with microphonic feedback or squealing. 2) Yes you must solder the cover or it won't properly shield and may increase hum. Thanks! ~Mojo

Thanks for the video! Is my Weller 25watt 750F iron okay for this, or should I get a hotter iron? Also, can I use 3M friction tape or electrical tape? Thanks so much! All The Best, Sam

Hey - Thanks for the question. I've never heard of using soap before. I would stick with the tried and true method of using bees wax, candle wax or paraffin.

Going to try this this weekend. :)

An alternative to actually soldering the cover to the pickup would be to solder a wire onto the cover on the outside, near the bottom and then run a ground wire from say, the back of a tone pot and connect it to that. Then you could just insert your pickup as in the video (I prefer to use silicone over melted wax). Finally, for extra solidity, you could silicone around where the solder joint would have been. This worked for me when with my 40W iron, I couldn't get the solder to stick to the base plate of my pickup and was afraid of damaging it by holding the iron there to long.

You need to hit the sides of the pickup cover with a rubber mallet. So they're not sticking out away from the pickup. When you put the cover on it should be touching the sides of the pickup. So you can easily solder it on.

hello , if i have a humbucker cover witout holes, can I install on this kind of pickups or is necesary the cover with holes?

If you are changing covers on wax potted pickup once the new cover is on should use the reat gun to remelt the wax that was already on the puckups so it bonds with the new cover or just slide it over the wax solder it and call it good??

In the case of closed face humbucker covers (holeless) would it be necessary to tape over both sets of poles?
@Claidheambmor Жыл бұрын
This is certainly an intense way of doing it, however I expect the majority of people will be put off adding covers to their pickups because they're afraid of having to put in wax and cover the pickups with tape and solder them. Truth is, you don't need to do ANY of that. Sure, there are some issues that technically may arise if you don't - but this is very very unlikely. Just buy 'em and put em on.

do you realy have to use some kind of wax to fill that space? do you realy have to soder the cover to the baseplate?

@imojotv Hey, quick question! As long as I cover the slugs with masking tape and they do not contact the cover would I still need wax to prevent microphonic feedback? Thanks.
@mantequilladecacahuate75816 жыл бұрын
HendrixToTheEnd You'd just need the wax to seal the spaces between the pickup and the cover. If you don't want to use wax you could use silicone adhesive and just put a few dots on the masking tape.

Can I remove the cover of a humbucker when it's like the plastic black generic cover of cheap pickups that come with your guitar? I scratched it pretty bad and since I can't buy new pickups I was wondering if under those there are normal pickups like the ones at the end of the video... Thanks

Es únicaente para garantizar que no haya contacto entre la cubierta niquelada y las piezas polares, actuando como "aislante". No afecta al tono en aboluto ya que no tiene ninguna incidencia magnética ni eléctrica.

Is there a reason you solder them on? Is it to ground them to the pickup or? Whats the point of soldering them when they are securely in place already?

What temperature are you using for the soldering iron?
@foghornnosehorn83836 жыл бұрын
L. E. B. He said it was a 50 watt iron. Probably set on 50 if it's variable, just get it off of what ever you're soldering fast. Don't heat the pickup or pot like you're gonna cook an egg on it and 50W isn't too much to use.
