As an old deadhead I have a hard time admitting it, but I like this version even more than Grateful Dead´s. Mollys voice suits the song perfectly, and it's sung with such passion.

It depends on the Dead version, but...yeah...this is about as definitive of a studio version as the Dead could have done...probably better in fact There were many live Dead version better than this, versions where Jerry's voice was solid and he was singing his heart out, but there were also a LOT of versions where Jerry's voice was beyond shit and he couldn't recall half the lyrics even with a teleprompter. Leaving all of that aside, this is just a beautiful version of a wonderful song.

I wanna believe in a time when Molly, Jerry, Bobby, Hunter and the others lived in Palo Alto as neighbors and collaborators. Lotta magic would have happened. I mean it did, with the Dead and other bands from the 60s. But can you imagine Jerry and Molly trading licks on stage? Wow! Thank the goddesses for Molly, her band, Billy Strings and many other wonderful young musicians we are blessed with today!

"I do feel like the guitar is sounding better and better from playing it so much. I actually visited the Pre-War shop back when they were building it. Before they put the back and sides together, they asked, “Do you want to write a secret note inside?” I took a line from one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs that I had just learned how to play, “Standing on the Moon.” I wrote, “A lovely view of heaven, but I’d rather be with you.” I think I drew a little moon too." "Little did I know I’d be recording that song after the pandemic hit and everything got locked down. All of a sudden it felt a lot more relevant, and I had a special little connection to that guitar. It kind of predicted my next album in a way, and I ended up naming the album …But I’d Rather Be with You."

Thank you for this mournful warning about the effects of war and hate. I've used it in two posts - including one for today - American Independence Day. As I listened now, I heard the "I'd rather be with you..." as spoken by the victims of war to those they left behind. These victims are men, women and, YES, children. Also, hearing you - a woman - sing it amplifies the effect...as women first labored and birthed these now-dead lives into being. Jerry is also smiling down. Gratefully, a 75-year young Deadhead

Some have noted a "Mother Goose" strand that runs throughout the Grateful Dead's music. I would add a "Patriotic" strand to that. "Crimson, white and indigo..." And here is America's sweetheart singing about Old Glory, Standing on the Moon. Priceless!

My favorite late-period Grateful Dead song. You did it so well. I took a 35 mile bike ride today and listened to the whole album twice. "Standing On The Moon" is my favorite. Also listened to "When You're Ready". I think you made a new fan today :)
