In this weeks episode, we visit the oldest White Crane school in Yong Chun County.. Yong Chun is said to be where Fang Qi Niang and her husband first taught White Crane. It's no coincidence that the place name sounds like Wing Chun, its just the Mandarin pronunciation, and some people believe Wing Chun has developed out of Crane Kung Fu.
In this series I team up with Jesse Enkamp aka the Karate Nerd to travel to Fujian province, Southwest China. We are here to explore the arts of Southern Shaolin, particularly the arts of White Crane, Five Ancestors and Luohan. If you wanna check it out early, its already being uploaded to / monkeystealspeach or will be released on KZfaq around March/April next year

I really liked your navigation around asking questions about breathing and around the facial expression. It's one of those kind of underrated informational things that really gives you this other kind of feel about form practice and definitely the connection to karate. Love these videos thank you so much

I love kung-fu but when ever I see a kung fu fighter in a competition, I never see these movements. It's always kick boxing. I'd love to see these movements used in real time contact.

Yes.. Madame Wing-Chun is derived or based on “Snake (bui gee) “Crane (FOOK-SAO) subduing hands) and “Mantis being 400 years old it’s no surprise that GUA CHOY back fist and the CHEUNG CHOY YUT GEE HAMMER both are used in those arts I mentioned.. the word flying hammer is found all the way back to the MING DYNASTY .. red boat opera was studying those arts.. in fact PAK SAO is found in MANTIS and WING CHUN .. BONG SAO too.. the idea was to develop some basic but effective tools without all the looking cool or like an animal

Thanks for making this lovely clip of training with appropriate translations. Good to see the time spent filming this and just letting it run giving your subjects time to "breathe" so that you get a feel for the training , the place, the humility , the freshness and the open-ness of the masters without a pre-concieved idea or an summary of understanding based on a tiny bit of time with them. All of this is a small part of the whole but you have in many ways cut to the chase. Thoughtful BBC style documentary rather than wizz bang CNN style sound bites! -

Yong Chun is the Mandarin pronunciation for Wing Chun, so to explain it, a Chinese man from Hong Kong would call this whole village (where this is filmed) Wing Chun/Weng Chun because the Chinese Characters are spoken that way in Cantonese. So to me it's obvious where the Gung Fu stile of Wing Chun which was practiced by Ip Man and given to Bruce Lee came from. White Crane was created by a woman AND Wing Chun/Yong Chun was also created by a woman?!?! Coincidence? I don't think so. It's probably the same origin that was mixed up with some legends and made up stories.

@@pancho43 Some martial historians think the woman may have actually been one of the male actors who played the female parts in the Chinese red boat opera troupes. The issue is that traditional Chinese culture was less concerned with historical accuracy and more concerned with using stories to legitimize their lineage and inspire people to their cause.

@@daviderusso1238 Shrsan Tai Bao looks nothing like Seisan/Hangetsu. "Sanzhan,Shisan,Sanshiliu, shiba and 108 etc etc are all generic names for hundreds of unrelated forms.
