Zheng Qing Yong is the top White Crane Master in Dayu Village, which sits atop a mountain overlooking Yong Chun County. Unfortunately we only got to spend not even half an hour with him, but it was just enough to film a bit of footage for both mine and Jesse’s channels.
Yong Chun is said to be where Fang Qi Niang and her husband first taught White Crane. It's no coincidence that the place name sounds like Wing Chun, its just the Mandarin pronunciation, and some people believe Wing Chun has developed out of Crane Kung Fu.
In this series I team up with Jesse Enkamp aka the Karate Nerd to travel to Fujian province, Southeast China. We are here to explore the arts of Southern Shaolin, particularly the arts of White Crane, Five Ancestors and Luohan.

Zhen Qing Yhon is a very skillfull Master,but it seems when the arrived he gets a little uncofortable, and then he gets more nervous about the questions about the application,thanks later he put more nicer, it look he is a good man,but maybe he was alittle suprised,i realize its very hard to get this kind of incredible content if you dont know the language and have like the "touch" to interact with the chinese social culture,thank you so much for your effort Will, i shows the reality to the difficults of foreigners comunications with another culture.

Powerful stuff. In some movements you can see clearly why White Crane is considered one of the ancestors of Karate

They focus on keeping the shoulders square and face on to the opponent... which I find hard to get used to given Mantis is usually a side on style

@@MonkeyStealsPeach Yeah I wondered why it was so hard for you, since with the little wing chun I did we already kept the face on the opponent, stood straight and had to use the force from the ground rather than our own

I used to do Wing Chun, but intensive Mantis training completely changed how I moved my body. Also, you cant see on camera just how damn strong the guy was

They do it in a similar way in Goju Ryu kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e86TmaZiqb2mepc.html The head teacher studied a bit in China, so I don't how long they've been doing it that way. It could be an innovation he brought back with him.

It would be Sticky Hands. Push Hands is for Tai Chi training and never even as hard as what the master did.

This really looks like a type of crane with a lot of tai chi in it. In tai chi we have a lot of push hands and learning to use the ground also the directions he uses match the 8 forces of tai chi

Not sure there’s any Taiji influence here, they do similar stuff in most Fujian styles. Maybe it points to a common ancestor way back.....

I think it’s just the element of Crane style that exists in Taiji. I think White Crane is older than Taiji, so it could be influencing the latter or they simply had a common ancestral arts?

push hands like techniques is common in most kung fu systems and so is using legs to ground to the floor for power or using the opponents force against them etc.

Crying and Feeding Crane in later episodes. Also met a Flying Crane guy but didnt get to film him unfortunately. Yong Chun Crane is a comprehensive style that features aspects of all four.

Chinese masters seem to just be cool with teaching in t shirts and jogging suits. No formality like in Japan/Okinawa. Pretty cool.

Chinese can be very relaxed but extremely strict too. I don't think the dress is about personality though but more to do (capitalistic) communism and our empire imploding since the Ming dynasty fell in 1644 which was the last purely Han Chinese dynasty. Back then temple worship at Tian Taan was central to the empire and much of the Asian continent joined us. We would still have long hair tied in buns, long silk gowns, carry swords etc, had that not happened. Meanwhile the Japanese Empire though much smaller lasted well into the 1950s even until now. So their local governors, warlords, nobles, etc, never handing so many dynastic changes are still living in the style of our Tang dynasty times in the 6th to 9th century AD. Hence their old school dress reflects also a rigid and proud mentality. But it's also fascistic and arrogant. So yeah, it also depends on the light that you see Japan. Chinese people have heaps of warmth, sincerity, generosity, and love. If they like you they like you. If they don't they will avoid you and tell you off. There's no culture of forced fake smile and polite manners. And a good shifu will treat a student like an adopted son.

What is your feeling about any connection to White Crane and Goju-Ryu Karate?

Ive never practiced Karate so not really qualified to comment. But what I will say is I doubt its as simple as saying this Kata comes from here and that Kata comes from there.

@@kentmoyer its most a myth. if u compare goju kata n techniques to white crane it is completely alien to each other even their sanchin is alien looking.....but if you compare goju ryu n even shotokan then compare it to fujian sothern lohan quan you can see a more comparable match...people get so caught up in the old bubishi karate manual mentioning "Crane" that the forget the second half of the Bubishi is on "Monk Boxing" or Lohan boxing. Example- Southern Lohan Quan Sam Chiem- kzfaq.info?search_query=southern+lohan+quan+sanzhan now compare it to Karate Sanchin and even Seisan/hangetsu etc. I think most karate comes from Southern monk boxing more then any crane infleunce. Though Goju Ryu's founder's master did study some form of crane based on Sanseiryu and Suparinpei ending stance being a double crane beak fighting stance common in many Fujian crane styles that are not from Yongchun lineages like feeding,crying,flying or shaking crane.

I did this style in Taiwan, it is close to useless against real pressure fighting as most kung fu is, however I style love the energy and the self mastery, and it's beautiful

I got that feeling too, but it's a pity he didn't do a demo. I also know people who practice the same wrist technique and nerve strikes. It's not too hard to learn but hard to do precisely while moving and in a fight. Mainland guys who dress like him generally speaking are hypocrites or charlatans. But I don't think it's fair to judge him until a demo.
