Monoprice's Monolith THX subwoofers were found to be top-notch products with excellent performance and terrific build quality, and it would be difficult to try to top what they have done, but that hasn't stopped them from trying, and today we review their latest attempt to do so in the Monolith 13" THX Ultra. This latest addition to the Monolith THX family raises the bar on previous Monolith subs in every respect while only incurring a modest price increase. How does the Monolith 13" THX Ultra fare in the subwoofer world? We discuss how this product may be Monoprice's best subwoofer to date packing a bigger punch for its size than any other sub on the market.

I'm running two Monolith 12" THX subs and they are great. I got both on one of their regular "sale days" for $1400 total I think. Would be hard for me to justify getting these new 13" instead as the 12" are great performers and having two subs (with a MiniDSP) really makes the room shake. Thanks for all your great content!

I prefer reading the reviews on your website. I was surprise to see a Monoprice sub on your website because I thought Monoprice was a cheap brand. Hell Nahh! I have been wanting to buy a good sub for a very long time. Especially now since I have managed to get my system setup on separates and with a great pre/pro. The sub was the last thing for me. In my research of all of the subs I found, REL, SVS, etc..., I was about to buy the SVS PB16-Ultra, that goes down to 11Hz but it cost three grand. The Monolith was the one with greatest potential and for the price, it was a no-brainer. So I finally broke down and bought one of these beast and I should have it by next Monday. I'll be replacing a Klipsch RW120 and it only goes down to 29Hz. I can't wait to get this monster. I bet that after having the Klipsch for so many years this is going to blow me away. I've been doing home theater for the last 20 years and I am a home theater fanatic. In my opinion Gene gives the best detailed, no-bullshit reviews on everything home theater. I can't get over how many of these clowns get on YT and claim to be experts and they don't have a clue. This guy saves me time and money and if I'm going to drop thousands on a product I'm looking to buy, I have to get a second opinion. Thanks, and keep them coming.

Monoprice has to get these around the world for the same retail price in the states. The 'dealers' outside of US are overpricing these ID brand subs, reaching 2 - 3 times the US price after conversion. I currently have a pair of SVS PC-200 and am planning to upgrade my subs. I am deciding between the SVS PB-4000 and the new MonoPrice Monolith THX 13" sub. It would be interesting to see a comparison between the two. I have only seen comparison between the Monolith THX 13" and SVS PB-3000. Though they are similar in the size of the woofer cone, the Monolith has just over twice the power rating. The PB-4000 would be a better comparison since they both have similar woofer sizes plus the power and price are also similar.

How would you say this compares to one of the older SVS PB-13 Ultra subs which you gave great reviews to some time ago (I have one of them with the 1000 watt sledge amp). Given this is a slightly larger driver and double the amp power do you think in a real world situation (small theater room), this would be a noticeable upgrade? Thanks

Gareth, I too have an SVS PB13 Ultra. As SVS no longer makes the 13 Ultra, I have been eyeballing the Mono 13 as well! The SVS is a 1000w but it peks at 3400. The Mono peaks at 3800 so that is pretty close. The dimensions, number and size of ports are also close and considering the svs is really a 13.5, I feel this is close as I can find and its at an excellent price. I did order one and it will be here in 2 weeks. Did you take the plunge?

Hi Gene. How does the 18 inch RTJ compare to this one? I know that the Monolith is half the price.

I grew tired of all of the back and forth drama in the forums when “researching” my next sub. So much brand loyalty and snobbery. And for what reasons exactly? People loved to bash monoprice but they actually produced a product that has amazing value. This came up on my radar and to me it is a no brainer. Sure it may have the occasional port chuff (most ported subs do as they are air pumps) but it has actual measurements AND passed the THX standards which has shut a lot of people up. Looking forward to it’s arrival.

I am leery Monoprice's customer service and warranty compared to SVS. If one of these subs craps out within 5 years it is going to be like $400 to ship it back.

@@HereticHulk according to their rep they are now shipping drivers or amps to people who have had failures. Apparently it has been less that 3% failure rate. This is from the rep on the forum. I have been hammering on mine for a while now and it’s incredible. Scarry actually. I actually had more issues with a US built sub recently and that return was a hassle due to the size of the unit not the transaction. I have no doubts svs customer service is some of the best. We are rather spoiled these days anyway. Not long ago warranties rarely went past 90 days then you were lucky to even get parts from the manufacturer.

I'm in search for new sub for my home theater room. It will be used for music and movies and unfortunately I only have room for one sub in my layout. The room size is 24'x12'. Right now I'm torn between the SVS PB3000 vs the SVS SB4000 vs this Monolith 13". What would you recommend in my situation?

Gene I read all the review articles especially from James Larson and I also watch the review videos. Btw did you ever find out if this sub or it's larger brother the M16 Ultra meets THX Dominus status?

I'm still reading your reviews of 5803 and the 5805 and SC-07. It's easier to reference when I am looking at used gear. Totally steered me away from the SC-07, even though it looks so cool.

These are available in Europe by the way, but you have to buy atleast two. Monoprice has a warehouse in the Netherlands and offer free shipping within the E.U. Just send them an e-mail and they will help you.
