@@ilusao1111 I’m not a huge fan of the spinning he does. It’d be bad against pretty much any weapon, but especially something that’s fast at stabbing. If you were fighting a skilled rapier used like that, he’d be quick to get in after the first spin and stab you in the back, if you’d even make it that far.

@@nanoqht285 well, these sword techniques were used against crowds and mostly for keeping people away. You won't dare poke someone with a rapier if you're in danger of getting a head chopped off.

@@nanoqht285 Polearms and montantes have nasty afterblow even if you do get stabbed, and they still have a huge leverage advantage due to 2 hands. Most stabs with rapiers do far less damage than a hit from a poleax or montante. Matt Easton has talked about an account from the Napoleonic Wars in which a British officer accepted a stab in the bicep in exchange for getting a good swing in on the French officer's neck.

As nice as this looks, I do have to wonder how well this could be incorporated into a duel or battle- your legs, core, head and limbs are frequently exposed by these grandiose manuveurs, you keep turning your back to the front and you don't seem to be focusing on maintaining edge alignment during the follow through of your strikes. Its an elegant routine all the same.

@@bodaciouschad Yeah this is far from what would be considered duel appropriate. It'd be more akin to flow drills and exercise. The closest application you could probably find would be fending off multiple enemies, likely in confined quarters like a long alleyway or something like that.

Yeah, weirdly a lot of these kinds of weapons were employed as crowd control in confined spaces like narrow alleyways or in VIP protection so it relied a lot on sweeping maneuvers to cover from multiple directions presenting as much of a 360 degree threat space as possible. This video is hardly a good demonstration of those codified plays though and is more akin to just freeform flow drills loosely based on them.

Not exactly, no. It's loosely based in a European tradition of Iberian and Italian greatsword (called a montante) which is dance-like in some of its motions but the point isn't dance, no. It's mainly meant to be continuous flow of motion and protecting different angles of attack, often for simulating being accosted in an alleyway or something like that. What I'm doing in this video is a lot of freeform flow drills loosely based on that. :)

Kinda touches on HEMA i'd say. Movement combination might be freestyle, but then again, in practice you probably wouldn't follow scripture/literature 1:1 anyway, right? But sword flourishes def were a thing. There is ofc use of polearms and greatswords on the battlefields, but they also were utilized often by guards. In that context flourish like techniques make a lot of sense - not just for protecting different angles, but also cuz the continued motion is about as energy efficient as it gets. Don't get me wrong, def NOT an easy feat swinging around a heavy, large object like this over a longer time, but a lot less taxing than to stop and initiate motions and trying to abruptly changing traction of a swing. It also works as a great area denial tool when holding a position. Imagine guards doing this on a bridge or gate to keep an angry mob at bay - as long as they don't have projectiles launched at them or the opponent also got polearms, spears or other long wepaons I can def see this being efficient. Yes, you *might* be able to close the gap and murderstab the sucker if you are quick enough. You ALSO might make contact with 2-4 kg of moving, pretty sharp steel if you mess up. Doesn't take much imagination that is kinda detrimental to health and life expectation. Moves might not always look super impactful, but there is a reason 2 handers are an issue when it comes to HEMA sparring. Because even practice swords are seriously dangerous due to sheer mass. Sparring with them at realistic speed is neigh impossible cuz it is seriously risky.

But yes, ofc this is not something you would normally use against people in heavy armour or when embedded in military (pike)formations. It was not intended for that either? Like I do not understand your point. You had various weapons/ tools and techniques for different situations. That is common sense honestly. Take half-swording, developed specifically for close combat situations and armoured opponents, pretty useless at full distance against a halberd or pike. Does that make half-swording a bad technique? No. It makes it a bad situation to apply half-swording unless you get in. To pick and examine a *specific* scenario and to then assume that the result can be applied in a generalized context is honestly pretty silly. edit: typo

It's a synthetic Montante training sword from Black Fencer. If you're in the US you can get them from SoCal Swords. Outside the US I believe Black Fencer ships most other places.

@@monsieurboks sometimes, most real swords are actually lighter than practice swords. I mean I'm not a expert on sword dancing replicas or whatever, but I own a lot of hema equipment and all my practice swords are heavier than my sharpened swords.
