WELL HECK! SO A FEW MONTHS AGO I RECIEVED A CALL FROM MY FRIEND TOM (BIRD DOG FARMS) AND HE ASKED IF I WOULD TAKE HIM FOR A HIKE IN THE CABINET MOUNTAINS. SO THE CRAZY SOB DRIVES TO MONTANA FROM VIRGINIA AND I TAKE HIM ON NOT JUST A HIKE...BUT AN ADVENTURE...AN ADVENTURE OF BUSHWHACKING HELL. TOM IS 62, BUT THE FELLA MOVES LIKE AN OLYMPIC ATHELETE. THROUGH ADVERSITY A TRUE FRIENDSHIP WAS FORGED. THANK YOU TOM FOR HELPING ME REACH ONE OF MY GOALS. CHECK OUT TOMS CHANNEL

Yep..a super cool dude. We plan on next fall to hike again...when there is no smoke and we can have a campfire at least. I feel bad that he didn't see the truly awesome views from that cliff lake area.

I took a few weeks off from hiking and working out to let my shoulder heal up a bit. Thats the hardest part...just sitting. Plan on going out this weekend and possibly next weekend. Those trips will probbaly wrap up my hiking season for the year. Have a Dr's appointment in October to see if I need an MRI.

I wish I would have taken a face plant...I would have come out better looking and my shoulder wouldn't hurt. Tom heard cuss words that day that he's probably never heard before....I kept falling and jarring that shoulder...immense pain..would immediately get the pain sweats. All an all a good trip and great company.

I will say that I am spoiled with having these beautiful mountains in our backyard. I'm hoping shoulder will heal on its own. I'm a side sleeper and I generally sleep on my right hand side....haven't got a lot of good sleep over the last few weeks.

Good video man. There is some real cool stuff there. Sometimes you fall, old guys brake they dont bounce. That cross country stuff is hard times I still have all kinds of scares on my legs from mountain lake surveys.

we found 2 camp sites. The other one closer to the water is more set up for hammock than tent camping. Where we camped was the best spot...we just had to walk down to the lake for water ..which was a bit of a pain.

Lol! Good one. That hiked kicked our butts.. Probably should have just did the road walk. I'm hoping it's just an impingement and not a full blown tear. I really don't want anymore hospital bills.

"Possible" Pro Tip: remove the straps from your trekking poles. ShastaBubba Dan does but he is a stickler for lightening his load. Personally, I've never removed mine and I hike everywhere with my sticks. However, one got hung up on a tree root once and the next thing I knew I was on the ground with the pole under my chest. Certainly knocked the wind out of me, and I thought I might have broken a rib or two. Fortunately, I didn't. I don't know if not having been secured to the stick would have made a difference for me or for you, but it might have. Nevertheless, kudos for forging on with the German shorthair from Virginia.

How’s the shoulder doing? Injuries do suck. After spraining my ankle last March (nearly broke it), I didn’t do any overnighters until early July. Thought I’d do the Elwha Trail to Humes Ranch because, on the map, it looked easy. And I’d just had a different surgery a month before. Was minding my own business (kinda like you were most likely doing) when a small rock decided to sabotage me. My bad ankle rolled. My trekking pole, which was SUPPOSED to be there for me, telescoped, and sent me almost head first off the downhill side of the trail. I did what could best be described as a drunken ninja move (drunk from exhaustion) and did some sort of flail roll over to regain control. Not sure it worked, but to my decreased misfortune, a small bitter cherry tree was there to catch me. Relieved that I didn’t have to hobble 9 or so miles out of the mountains, I took a moment to ponder what had just happened. My trekking pole had some how loosened up and when I put weight on it during the fall, it gave way. I was then a little shook up because if this had happened on a part of the trail with any vertical drop and not trees to stop me, I could’ve had a nasty and possibly fatal fall. Having forgotten my trekking poles when we went to Montana in August, I had to do the Swamp Creek Trail without them. I noticed that it seemed actually easier only having to focus on where I placed my feet and not on were to place my trekking poles as well. I may have to rethink always hiking with my trekking poles. I’ve also had a few times where I’ve also tweaked my shoulder with them. They do have their place, but definitely not going to rely on them for every hike.

My trekking poles are also a monopod for when I'm filming...generally throw my DJI pocket 2 on there. I can definitely see how if a person becomes to reliant on them ...especially bouldering, or going across logs that it could turn into an injury really quick. My shoulder is doing better...been doing rehab exercises daily and stretching it. However, there is definitely still pain and some grinding going on in there.

Great hike Jesse. I was in that area and above Moran Basin a few weeks ago, but I didn't drop down into the lakes. Beautiful area. Sorry about your shoulder. The last time I tore one of mine was a couple years ago while on top of Houser peak. It is a freaking painful injury. Kudos to you for continuing on with the hike!! Also, I'm not sure if you know this or not, but your not allowed to fly drones from within the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness area at all.
@hyoh-wu
@hyoh-wu 8 ай бұрын
Took the drone up from the parking lot. we are not allowed to take off or land in a wilderness area. I for sure don't want to get a fine that's for dang sure. Yeah I haven't slept very well since the accident. it sucks. My off strail bushwhacking is done for the year....I think China Lake is next on my radar. I knew one thing for sure ...I wasn't gonna give up and waste Tom's time. Had I been by myself I would have called it a day.

@@hyoh-wu I haven't been to China lake yet. Now that should be a great place to check out. It was four years ago when I screwed up my left shoulder on Houser peak. What a painful trip that was off the mountain and then six miles out of Granite creek. I didn't have my shoulder worked on, and I figured it would heal up on it's own .... again. Lol. So, this year will be the first year since that fall that I am able to do archery hunting. It still hurts like a mother if I have to hold it at full draw for very long, but if I can get a bull to stand still long enough at five yards I might have a chance! Again though, great job on getting your hike finished with that injury. I was feeling your pain the moment you said the word "torn". 🙂

@Thebobfactor trust me I'm not happy about my injury. I have about 1500.00 left in medical bills from my last tear and hernia. Down from 10k. I just want to be out of medical debt . With these shoulder injuries it's gravity that makes it hurt the worse....a guy just can't get comfortable.

Moran Basin is one of America's Most Dangerous hikes! Not because of bears or rotator cuff injuries, but because there is a local guntuber that has multiple videos of himself recklessly unloading full mags at the lake from atop the SW ridge.
