As part of his continued field testing for Howa rifles, Randy has another batch of Howa rifles on H-S Precision stocks. Again, he has Leupold VX-5 scopes mounted on them, using multiple CDS dials for each scope that allows him to use a variety of Nosler ammunition without much change to the scope settings.
These rifles will be used for antelope, deer, and elk. The goal is to inform Howa what will be the most versatile rifle for the hunter who primarily hunts deer or primarily hunts elk. Many hunters will only have one rifle, possibly two. We want that hunter to have the a rifle that covers the greatest number of possibilities with the fewest number of cartridges.

@@Fresh_Tracks Please pardon my ignorance. Would you mind explaining to a newbie how the 7mm-08 is more versatile? The specs, seem to be "near enough, as to make no difference." I get that the 7mm will have a higher BC, but it appears one wouldn't really utilize that benefit under 400 yards. Out of the same model rifle, the .308 has more energy at under 300 yards. What becomes the deciding factor/s for you, when deciding between the two?

You said you use to hunt with a 270, what do you hunt with now. My 270 is my go to rifle and I think it is going to catch on as a long range gun as the bullet companies create some higher ballistic coefficient bullets. I had one shot kills on deer, antelope and elk. My dad used my 270 to shoot a once in a life time moose in Utah. That one took two shots. A great caliber!!! I would like to see the results of Randy's 270 break in and then his targets out to 500 yards.

I replaced my 270 with a 6.5 Creedmoor. I also have a 30-06. I wanted to try something different in a short action caliber. I am not saying that the 6.5 CM is better than the 270. I don't disagree that a 6.5 will kill elk, but I think that it requires really good bullet placement. I think is a light gun for elk and you can find a lot better calibers and bullets for elk. It might be okay for a cow elk, but a bull with a thicker hide and bigger bone structure and muscles leaves the 6.5 creedmore lacking. They are tough animals. With respect to animals, you never want to wound an animal and let it get away and suffer. (270, 30-06, 308, 7mm-08, 7mm, 300 win........)

You are amassing quite the collection of rifles and ammunition. Three questions; 1.) Since you are breaking in or seasoning each of these barrels while punching holes in paper and getting the rifle close to zero, could the "average joe" who doesn't have access to free ammunition use inexpensive rounds of the same bullet weight to accomplish this same task? I typically follow nearly the same procedure outlined and in so doing go through and entire 20 round box of shells and once this is accomplished then switch to the intended round for setting the final zero . For example, use Remington 180 grain for seasoning and then Nosler 180 grain for final zero. 2.) I did not see anywhere in the video the use of a chronograph to accurately determine muzzle velocity of the various rifles and ammunition combinations. Are you taking at face value the published or printed values for muzzle velocity provided by the manufacture? 3.) One of the attractive features associated with many different Leupold scopes is the CDS System. In previous videos you have used this system to precisely "dial in" a long distance shot. There are several straight forward elements that go into creating a CDS dial (cartridge & caliber, bullet weight, bullet make/brand, ballistic coefficient, sight distance, zero distance, muzzle velocity) and some that are user defined (average temperature, average elevation). Will all of the rifles featured in this video segment eventually have CDS dials and if so, what temperature and elevation values will be assigned to each rifle? Sorry for the long winded question.
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 5 жыл бұрын
I have a chrono. Once I am done with barrel break in I will run all rounds through a chrono. All will be CDS and each will have a bit different temp and elevation, based on its most intended use. For some I will get multiple dials for the same scope.

A lot of truth to that statement, but I don't see me ever being a "one-rifle guy." Just too much fun having multiple rifles.

A great cartridge, for sure. Just not part of my arsenal.

there's absolutely no need whatsoever to 'break-in' a hammer forged barrel made with today's metals and processes. Are we removing copper from the barrel? I doubt seriously any of those Howas accumulated any real amount of copper. Oh, what removes copper..? Ammonia. Ammonia doesn't discriminate. If it attacks copper, which is far more noble than ordinance steel, you can be sure it will attack steel, and you've ruined your gun altogether.

MEAlstonIII then don’t! They won’t take your gun away I promise. Just a recommendation they make.

Howa needs to stop using the Hogue pillar-bedded Overmolded stock with the M1500 rifle and switch to the Overmolded version of that stock with the full aluminum bedding block. The pillar-bedded version has way too much flex and ruins the accuracy of the rifle.
