I think Jarno Trulli was better than the "Trulli Train" meme would suggest. If his engine hadn't failed, he could have won in Austria 1997 and twice in his career, he joined teams just as they were slumping. After subbing for Panis in 1997, the Prost team he partnered Panis in full time from 1998-99 became uncompetitive when they ditched Mugen-Honda engines for Peugeot. Similar things happened with Jordan. With the team having launched an unlikely title bid in 1999 with Heinz Harold Frentzen, securing 3rd in the Constructors Championship, it proved a false dawn when Trulli was hired to replace the retiring Damon Hill. The 2000 Jordan was overweight and measures to reduce it adversely affected reliability. 6th in the Constructors Championship was the result and although 5th in the Constructors Championship in 2001 looks like an improvement on paper, they only scored 3 points more in 2001 and didn't score a podium

I think Robert Kubica might be a good pick for a retrospective From being tipped as a future champion to a near-fatal crash severing part of his arm to recovery, winning the WRC2 title and making it back to F1 Not to mention the stuff he did in WEC, ELMS and DTM

In his prime, I don't think many realise just how good Trulli was. The trains formed because he'd put a relatively lesser car where it wouldn't be expected on the grid, then held them off skillfully.

Jarno Trulli was a remarkable driver. Despite his only win, on his day, you could not fault him. 2004 Monaco was his defining moment, I have doubt, he may been even greater if went to McLaren instead of Montoya. (Not that was an option, just a hypothetical)

I think the likeliest scenario is that Trulli felt most comfortable with quali set-ups that worked best on low fuel, hence why he was so good on Saturdays & probably why he seemed to struggle a big more on Sundays. But still, you can't deny that raw pace.

I think a lot of Jarno's problems were the tires of the time and his precise driving style when they grained he couldn't get through fast enough, unlike Alonso and Kimi

In his final season at Lotus/Caterham I remember him moaning at every race about the power steering not giving him the feedback that he required.

Trulli seems to be one of those drives that can do wonders in the back or mid field teams but get to the front he just can't get it together

With Renault I believe that they found Alonso to have a better map on the car and offered more power. Not sure how true that is but does explain some strange drops in lap times. Also think he had a little issue with pressure.

There is one aspect that I think you miss to mention. I'll take 2001 as an example. Trulli managed to slam that Jordan onto grid positions it did not belong. If you qualify 4th and mix it with Ferrari, McLaren and Williams, of course you would not be able to keep up during the race distance if the car is not right. He has also had terrible cars in his career when it comes to reliability should be said. Not a Trulli fan, and there is some truth to the term Trulli train. He was a better qualifyer than racer, but he also gets to much flack for it

1998-2007 was by far the best F1 era. I loved it so much. Jarno always was a fast driver. He had an impressive career.

23 years ago I visited a very nice go kart circuit near Coffs Harbour in Northern NSW. It had previously hosted the World Championships. Bronze plaque on the wall with the name of the lap record holder- Jarno Trulli.

The Moreno video is a great candidate to add to the retrospective playlist. I'm not doing the Moreno memelord stuff, this is a serious suggestion. It changed my views on him, as I bet it did on quite a few other subscribers too.

I remember all the bluster with Ralf carrying the second Schumacher name onto the grid and while he did beat all his team mates up until 2002, his second season partnered with Montoya, I always felt by the point he moved to Toyota he was a disappointment. I guess properly analysing it, Montoya was a monster which would make most drivers look average. Going up against Trulli who was a very solid driver didnt do much to enhance my opinion of him either. I guess as well that expectation of him to be competing with the Michael was always going to be unrealistic. As you said, Trulli and by extension Ralf did compete at a time with some very strong midfielders and legends in their own right.

Keep in mind karting is pretty much a massive train most of the race and it’s only through battles or mistakes where overtakes happen because everyone is on rails. Might explain Trulli winning it while others didn’t.

Trulli was always a favourite of mine, I even had a fish called trulli that had the red and white colours of his Toyota! The what if of Trulli in the 05 Renault really does get me thinking. Not to say he would have beaten Alonso, but I think he would have been in the mix more than Fisci and it could have been quite fiery! Atleast his 05 season with Toyota was still pretty good.

A couple of points that might be interesting: 1) while Trulli did beat Ralf comfortably in qualifying over their three years together, he actually only won the qualifying head-to-head in two of those years, Ralf won 11-7 in 2006 so the overall figure obscures just how far ahead he was in 2005 and 2007. 2006 was the first year of the current three-stage elimination format so maybe the change messed Trulli up a bit. 2) At the point where Briatore ditched Trulli in 2004, Trulli was actually ahead of Alonso in the championship which would put Jarno on the (incredibly short) list of teammates who've outscored Fernando Alonso. Finally, to answer your questions about gaining or losing positions, the only data I have is his average qualifying classification versus his average finishing position. By that measure he's not too bad overall but during his five years at Toyota he lost positions on average in four of them (2006, his worst qualifying performance of his career barring his final season, being the exception). That would suggest that during his time at Toyota there was some truth to the Trulli train and the idea of him being a quali specialist, but not over his career as a whole (for comparison Ralf and Timo Glock both had higher average finishing positions than qualifying positions over all of those five years so it was just a Trulli tendency, not Toyota overall).

A few weeks ago I made a prediction Aiden would cover Trulli one day given he's already covered Frentzen, Fisi, Coulthard etc. Guys who had their peak in the late 90s when he seemingly started watching. Based on that, I'm predicting videos on Jos Verstappen, Jan Magnessen and Olivier Panis in the future. Great job again man.

Yeah, Senna was beaten in the World Karting Championship by a good ole boy from Mississippi named Lake Speed. Lake went from there to a NASCAR career where he won (you guessed it) one race. His progeny would be heard from again as his son Scott Speed briefly darkened the doors of F1. Something about a young Gunther Steiner and Red Bull?

I was a big fan of Jarno. I wished him luck in the morning before Monza 05 and he finished P5. He seemed like a really nice guy, maybe a but more shy than some of his contemporaries. It cannot be understated that his Trulli Train persona should never be a negative, it just means he was an absolute demon in qualifying, one of the best to ever do it.

Trulli always felt like someone who could have great races and brilliant qualifying laps but could never stay plugged in for a full season. Even in 2004 or 2009, it felt like he only woke up for the races he felt he’d be competitive in.

This was a very interesting driver, among a few other midfielders, as someone who started watching in 2007

6:45 - So it wasn't just vibes - Max and Fernando really are kindred spirits, lmao. I suppose he may be one of the first of the "groomed golden boys" that I sorta attributed to Vettel (in terms of successful multi-WDCs brought up by the manager to lead the teams, and succeeding), then flowing to Max now.

Worth mentioning, looking back Trulli himself considers his tire management his greatest problem. Simply put, he was too gentle on them, as they needed to be degraded somewhat to be at their best and he couldn't do as fast as most other drivers did. Also, he's an award winning wine producer nowadays. It's a pretty interesting story, as his Toyota engineers helped him set up the wineyard back when he was racing for them.

There’s been a couple that have the wrong ‘tag/description’ noted at the bottom. 1st pic of the video shows the no.27 Ferrari but says it’s DC driving and 12:06 in the vid shows the Trulli Toyota buts lists Venturi Larrouse Lamborghini from 1992 are a couple of examples. Otherwise I enjoyed the vid and and do appreciate the effort put into these ‘look back’ videos.

Trulli but in stronger race performances later on in his career. In 2004 he was sacked by Renault because he didn't score a single point after the French GP. He was sacked about 2 or 3 races from the end. 😊

For the Karting champs, you should have considered the Junior champ, since those are the ones that move through the ranks. You would have seen Prost, de Cesaris, Stefano Modena, Bernd Schneider, Jan Magnussen, Pantano, Alonso, Albon, and Leclerc all on the top of the podium. Look at the full podium for the Juniors championship and you'll also get Yvan Muller, Schumacher, McNish, Trulli, Liuzzi, Gasly, Max, and Mick Schumacher

that was just the 100CC champions, theres many more aswell, and when you see the drivers that were almost f1 drivers like 3rd or test drivers.... it becomes alot. you win the world karting championship.... you're onto success

I'd say he's a hotlap merchant but to the extreme, the other side of this for me is a John Watson, always dangerous regardless if he was on pole (twice) or 22nd (if I'm not mistaken the furthest back anyone has ever won from and he did it)

Looking at that list, it means in Miami this year that Lando Norris joined Jarno Trulli in being the only World Karting champions to have ever won a Grand Prix. That's abit nutty to think about...

Verstappen also won the karting world championships, albeit in the KZ class, in 2013. Norris won the KF class in 2014. Unless I'm mistaken, the KZ karts have a gearbox, whereas KF does not. KZ karts have a bit more hp and a higher top speed. Comparing KF to KZ might be more like comparing F1 to Indycar rather than comparing F1 to F2.

Well, there are 2 inaccuracies in this video. 1. In Monaco 2004 there were no Trulli train. Trulli was the fastest also on Sunday, easily widening the gap on Button and managing it to Alonso. Only Schumi was the fastest between the pit-stops. After Alonso and Schumi crashed, Trulli just activated cruise-control. 2. In France 2004 Button would have finished 3rd if he didn't stall on the last pit-stop. So 1-3 or 2-3 was never sure for Renault at any moment of the Grand Prix.

Side note: besides being rapid in qualifying,, Trulli probably had the best hair of all the drivers on the grid. lol

Trulli was incredibly unlucky from 2000-2002. The only time he got lucky in these years was when his disqualification of the 2001 US Grand Prix was overturned. The Bridgestones were never really good over a single lap at Monaco, so it wasn't much of a surprise Michael Schumacher wasn't on pole in 2004. When Alonso, who was running in second place, crashed while lapping an erratically driving Ralf Schumacher, Michael took the lead by not pitting. He then had this weird crash behind the safety car with Montoya, who was a lap down. Without that crash, he might have won that race, but we will never know for sure of course. After France later that year, nothing went well for Trulli. The best example was the Belgian Grand Prix, where he started on pole, only to slip back to 9th in the race. He showed his class in the final races of 2004 by qualifying that Toyota inside the top 10 on both occasions. Then in 2005, the car was much better and he qualified on the front row twice in the first two races. He miraculously got outscored by Ralf that year, as well as in 2006. Toyota were on an upward trajectory in their final years. Trulli probably should have won the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix, which might have kept Toyota in F1 and spared him of two years in a very slow Lotus/Caterham.

A part of me thinks his development as a driver was stunted by some of the things that happened in his career Prost GP was a trainwreck and the tricolor on his passport had green instead of blue, Jordan were all-in on Frentzen until like the middle of 2002, at Benetton Briatore had all his eggs in Fernando's basket and really didn't like Trulli, Toyota was a mess and we don't even need to talk about Lotus Had he spent his career not bouncing around teams that were bad and/or didn't like him, I think the story of Jarno Trulli would be very different

He's a bit like Teo Fabi in a way (rapid over a single lap - but never could seal the deal. Fabi has the rather dubious record of having the most pole positions [3] without leading a single lap.)

I think another problem he had was he was always compared to Senna because "he looked a bit like him". He also did himself no favours with the whole Sutil incident at Brazil in 2009. When they did the press conference in Abu Dhabi he became a laughing stock, even among the other drivers with his "I have photos" moment.

the reason there was a trulli train was because he was qualifying a slower car further up the field than he should have. in a race, the faster cars he outqualified would naturally be quicker and caught up behind him.

i think it is quite ironic that we do have a version of trulli train again but it is the form of his former teammate alonso.

I honestly believe he'd do a lot better than Fisichella had he remained at Renault for 2005 and 2006. Pity the Toyota debacle didn't pan out. A better managed team and Trulli might have won the odd race for Toyota. Hate to go down this path but I also often use Trulli as an example of a good qualifier (4 poles and 15 first row starts - with Renault and Toyota cars) when making an argument how *bad* of a qualifier Perez is (3 poles, 12 first row starts - all in a dominant Red Bull).

I watched something on KZfaq with my Dad recently about one of the blokes who won the World Karting Championship. His name escapes me, but he beat Senna to win it, then buggered off to NASCAR where he won only a single Cup race in his whole career. I think the takeaway here is that the World Karting Championship means nothing.

Guess Trulli's race pace was not good for the simple reason of him qualifying way better than his car could/should and therefore spending entire races defending his position from faster cars.

He was extremely fast in a race with the Renault, he was just the unluckiest driver in the history of F1 (legit). He got crashed out, had tons of issues, his tyres died every time, it was impossible for him to finish a race normally Granted, he would've never turned the world into storm, but he wouldn't have been so miserable in the standings in 2002-04. On Toyota on the other hand, he qualified amazingly but disappeared on the races. Can't talk about the other years tho since I haven't watched those races lately

The 2000 season was the first I followed, so all the drivers who took part in that season are over-glorified by me.

DC created the single most expensive F! crash to date, Spa. Tens of millions of pounds for all the cars crashing thanks to DC.

My memories of Trulli are that he was kind of alright I guess... he wasn't bad but he wasn't great either. He was a Tsunoda type of driver I suppose. Anyway, why did Red Bull renew Checo's contract... he's lost it.
