After having cemented his status, by virtue of his triumph 1st American Chess Congress (1857), as one of the greatest masters in the world, Morphy traveled to Europe to play Howard Staunton and other chess greats. Morphy made numerous attempts at setting up a match with Staunton, but none ever came to fruition. Staunton was later criticised for avoiding a match with Morphy. Seeking new opponents, Morphy crossed the English Channel to France.
In Paris, Morphy suffered from a bout of intestinal influenza. In accordance with the medical wisdom of the time, he was treated with leeches, resulting in his losing a significant amount of blood. Although too weak to stand up unaided, Morphy insisted on going ahead with a match against the visiting German master Adolf Anderssen, considered by many to be Europe's leading player. Despite his illness Morphy triumphed easily, winning seven while losing two, with two draws. When asked about his defeat, Anderssen claimed to be out of practice, but also admitted that Morphy was in any event the stronger player and that he was fairly beaten. Anderssen also attested that in his opinion, Morphy was the strongest player ever to play the game, even stronger than the famous French champion Louis Charles Mahe De La Bourdonnais.

man he probably calculated from the move Nxg4 that he wins the queen,engines agree with his every move after that...man Morphy's accurate play is really scary..And not only that,he chose the sharpest variations,never played boring chess..truly the master of the game..

I like what Fischer said about Morphy's play in general, when asked. He said, "He saw the whole board." That is a high compliment in chess, I think. If Fischer saw my games, he might say, "He only saw part of the board." ;)

That's an interesting quote. I always tell myself to 'look up the board' from time to time as I find that I tend to focus in on a small part of the board and don't notice that there's a bishop lurking in the corner waiting to pounce!

Stockfish says that the position at 4:30 is actually +0,7 for white, so perfectly equal. Morphy was really good at outprepearing his opponents, something that later GMs learned to master as well as being good chess players. Morphy was definitely paying a lot of time on his own against himself and a chess board to be able to prepare so many crazy lines! Just brilliant chess by the young guy!

Also the Bg5 line is also equal after Kc3. Yes you can afford your king on c3 momentarily being a Queen up, Stockfish again thinks this is perfectly equal. Actually the game is equal from all sides with zero blunders until move 19 where Andersen played Bf6 (instead of Be7 which keeps the game still equal) this is the blunder of the game, Morphy made zero blunders in this crazy game no matter how amazing that sounds, Stockfish shows the entire game is equal all through Andersen's blunder. Morphy simply playing the top Stockfish move EVERY SINGLE TIME this is outrageous. So no, I disagree and the engine disagrees as well, there is no theoretical advantage for black in this game, if Morphy plays the best move every time (which he did every single move) this is just equal but very sharp and Andersen couldn't hold this.

Bxc1 is a pretty good follow up to Kc1, but white still has some winning chances. White has sacrificed the exchange, giving up the king for a bishop, but now at least the dark squares can be controlled by the white queen. Also, without the bishop in the way, whites g pawn start to be pushed and be very deadly if the white queen gobbles up the black h pawn. I'd say after Bxc1 the position is equal.

I get the errors by Anderssen after all it was a casual game so most likely they were both playing quickly and Morphy's strength vs other strong players was even more apparent in a quick game.

5:46 Only move is bishop to e2. Bishop takes bishop with check. King is forced to e1. Bishop retreats to h5 with a discovered check from the rook, also aiming for the queen at f7. After king is forced to f1, bishop takes queen.

We are currently in the 2020 version of the Morphy Saga. I just had to take a sneak peek at what we might be revisiting. Morphy's reputation preceded his meeting with Anderssen. So there's no doubt Anderssen would have been ready for anything. What we see here in this casual prelude is something very strange. Morphy exposed flaws in Anderssen's methodology. Which was the method of the time - attack. Morphy, the same, but attacked far differently than his contemporaries.

Howard Staunton was telling the truth. He looked at Morphy's games and was so amazed he became ill because he knew Morphy would destroy him in a match. I decided to look at some of Staunton's games-there was no way he would survive a match vs Morphy. Morphy's grasp of chess was far beyond Staunton's. People often say, "Morphy made lots of mistakes", but if you look only at his serious games then you realize that not only was he the strongest of his time also his understanding of chess was way ahead of the rest.

When Anderssen resigns, he's not that far down on material: he has rook and knight for the queen. Both players have an equal number of pawns, and the same number of isolated pawns. I guess he didn't like his position much, particularly the inactive rook on a8.

Hi agadmator, i have a few questions, i’m playing chess for a few weeks now and i am at rating 1100 and still climbing on a 11 games winstreak, the problem is i only know basic openingprinciples but i never understand all these tactics behind the openings in the games you show, are there any videos where you explain openingtactics? You’re the only chesschannel i love so it would be easier to learn from you! “Play the opening like a book, the midgame like magician and the endgame like a machine” So far i’m winning a lot only because of my midgame magic haha

Yes but in addition to being down materially his position was just bad as well. Developing the Queen's side would be difficult, his pawns were weak, Morphy's pieces were pretty well placed and Anderssen only had a good rook. It's a much bigger advantage than +1

I looked at that position where it is surprising, even to a patzer like me, that Anderssen did not play 18...Bg5+. You were also surprised to see a player of Anderssen's strength not play it. I thought maybe the players saw a lot more than we did. After all both of them were among the strongest players in the world at that time and those two were probably the strongest in an open game. So I decided to let an engine look at it and the engine doesn't think 18...Bg5+ is the best. It prefers 18...Ng3. This made me curious to see why so I had the engine play on after 18...Bg5+. It was a fast time control but white soon achieved a won game.
