One of the things that first attracted me to the Mossberg 590 was that it could take a standard M7 bayonet. Not knowing any better I just naturally assumed that the M9 that the Army uses and the Marine Corps OKC3S would too.
Well I was wrong. While the M9 would fit the USMC OKC3S won't because it has a slightly longer handle. The good news is there's a fix and its simpler than you think...
GG&G makes various options for Mossberg shotgun accessories - like Flashlights & slings that when installed allow use of the larger Marine Bayonet.

I realize this is an older video but I wanted to thank you for this mod. I used the GG&G Sling mount for my OKC3S on my Mossberg 590 and it worked perfectly. I did not need to grind down the Sling Mount but only need to compress the bayonet's handle slightly. Perhaps they've reduced the size. (6 years later). Makes it even more secure and connects/disconnects easily. PERFECT! Thanks again & Semper Fi.

Nothing clears the trenches like a shotgun with a bayonet! A lot has gone wrong if you get within bayonet distance of the enemy with a rifle, and honestly, most rifles these days aren't really good candidates for bayonet fighting. But shotguns are used up close and personal, and it makes sense to have a pointy thing on the end if you get caught without ammo, or just in the process of reloading. I have loved shotguns with bayonets since reading about the Winchester 1897 with that big ass Enfield bayonet in WWI; Germans were so scared of it they claimed it violated rules of war and they were going to kill any American prisoners they found in possession of it. Brutishly effective setup with that OKC bayonet on the end of a 590! I want one!

Hello and good evening Bret Duff. Please accept a hearty Semper Fidelis from this old Vietnam era Navy guy. I both enjoyed your video and found it informative as well. /As to the GG&G shotgun accessories.. well I'm the happy owner of a 1999 production Mossberg 590SP. This has ghost ring sights and I installed a GG&G polished red aluminum follower when I replaced the factory magazine tube spring with a Wolff extra power spring. This allows keeping the magazine loaded for longer periods of time without weakening the spring. I later found that the metal (aluminum) trigger assembly as well as the metal safety switch from the 590A1 will of course fit the 590SP and replaced the factory polymer units. Over time I've made upgrade to most of my firearms always with an eye toward increased reliability/durability and accuracy. I don't get into a "Gucci" gun with pretentious stuff plastered all over it for looks. I just don't need the extra weight. Now a a pointy implement well that Army M9 bayonet fits well on this and it's easy to put on or remove thus far. As to the fore end I initially got a Magpul kit with the buttstock but with my smallish hands and beefy palms found getting a comfortable grip on the Magpul fore end a challenge so I went with Command Arms tri rail unit. I really am impressed with the reliability of the 590 and to date have over 2,000 rounds down range and not a hickup from the shotgun. Be safe Marine. All the best. I'm out

Recently bought a Mossberg 590A1 and that OCK3S looks good. As it happens, I've already got the G&G front sling mount on my shotgun, so - thanks to your video - the compatibility issue seems to be solved and all that remains is to buy the bayonet. Thanks for sharing.

US ARMY 1968 - 1971. I put the M7 bayonet on mine and it looked very skimpy...........So I bought a large bowie knife blade and a M7 hand guard + butt attachment and custom made a big bowie bayonet for my Mossberg. made I handle scales out of black walnut, and I custom leather sheath. It is so intimidating, I probably won't have to fire a shot. Edit: I tried to correct "made I handle" but it just would not work. I made grips out of black walnut, and a custom leather sheath.

The bayonet lug on my 590A1 came drilled and tapped for a sling swivel eye facing the rear of the bayonet lug. I screwed in a swivel and attached my sling. I too was a bit concerned with the minimal purchase afforded for bayonet's mount on magazine cap. I went to Lowe's and bought a 10pk of #1 ( I think) o-rings. I took my magazine cap with me to size it correctly. The 10pk cost about $1.50 and one o-ring spaces the cap out correctly without need for Dremel work or refinishing. The rubber o-ring gives the cap plenty of grip and it remains snug and the bayonet does not vibrate and no need for visegrips to remove it. When you remove your barrel for cleaning you can carry an extra o-ring or nine on your magazine tube between the mounts in case you ever need a spare. I prefer the KISS method and cost savings YMMV.

Good to know. Like I said I tried the shims - didn't think about the O-Rings. While I really like GG&G's quick disconnect sling swivel. Makes for quick transition from a two-point sling to a single point sling.

Don't over think the flashlight position. If you're ever in the position for having to use it in defense, then that light will cast shadows off everything around you. Just accept it. The main thing is that even with the sling on the light will illuminate the room in front of you so that you can know where, what, and who is in front of you.

Firstly thanks for your service! Secondly, I own this same model shotgun, and have the m7 bayonet and was just watching random videos. But what interests me is your use of the magpul forend with the heat shield, can you tell me how you got the two to work without issues? Everything I've seen so far notes that they are incompatible and the heat shield must be crimped and the forend modified for the parts not to rub. What was your solution?
@michaelholder9442
@michaelholder9442 3 жыл бұрын
There is a youtube video about how to adjust the heatshield so you can use the magpul forend. Simple all I did was use a C-clamp and a rage to squeeze the heat shield side edges. This will allow the magpul forend to cycle with no issues.

I plan on adding this Bayonet to my Mossberg 590A1 US service model. My thoughts are to do a very sweet professional weld job of a washer on the bayonet. allowing it to seat properly on the cap. makes more sense to me to modify the bayonet verses extending the cap. Any thoughts? I have not ordered the bayonet yet. Just tossing this out. in case someone has done it. or. likes the idea. I am sure that is the best fix. besides. I believe 1/4" is probably the best measurement.. When I get the Bayonet I will decide what to add.

Let me ask you, what is your opinion or experience with drop test on the Moss 590 as it was adopted by military and keeping a round chambered?
@Bret928
@Bret928 Жыл бұрын
I can't speak to the Drop Test or the 590 being adopted by the military. When I was in the Marine Corps I was only exposed to Remington 870s when I was on guard duty. I've seen some blogs and comments on the internet about this - but in all my years (64) I don't think I've actually seen this phenomenon with any firearm. I've seen accidental discharges but most were due to human error or a mechanical issue when they had the firearms in the operator's hand. I've heard it happens but I've never personally seen one discharge that was dropped. I personally never keep a round in the chamber of my home defensive shotgun when it's stored and only chamber a round when I'm ready to fire it.
@LexTheLionLocc
@LexTheLionLocc Жыл бұрын
@@Bret928 hmmm. I've always understood shotguns to not be drop safe, so I don't keep a round chambered either. But I have been " hearing " about and seen some videos of shotguns being dropped on purpose with a cap charge and nothing goes off. I've seen a few videos where the gun accidentally falls and it discharges. So ultimately, shotguns are not built like glocks and so I don't think its a good idea either but it's 50/50 with the arguments. Apparently AR's have a double hook system for the sear to catch which makes it impossible for it to discharge vs a shotgun only having 1 hook.

The only even remote scenario is a riotous political demonstration that goes sideways on your block, we saw this numerous times in 2020. Worth noting that the intimidating sight of a bayonet-shotgun could have an opposite, incendiary effect on an ideologically motivated mob. In our society, people don't always take a gun seriously until it's used. This is a "front porch" weapon.

The Mossberg shotguns have a design flaw that will allow the lifter hinge pins to pop out of the frame when dropped from only a foot off the ground. To cause the breakdown drop the gun on its side from about a foot off the ground. It will easily pop back into place if you giggle the slide until it does, but if you attempt to rack the slide entirely the gun will jam. I communicated this to Mossberg who informed me they're aware of the problem, asked me to send the gun back to them to be fixed. When I got it back it still did it, and Mossberg never did anything else at that point to fix it. I got rid of the gun and won't buy another one until they fix this design flaw. Just FYI.
@treier1589
@treier1589 6 жыл бұрын
Gene Cardwell I feel you may have gotten a lemon or two. I cannot see how this is a widespread issue that the military in all if it's years of use did not find this problem. I believe you had the issue you had. But to say all have a design flaw is just hard to swallow when the 500-590A1 all have been known to be very rugged hard use guns.

I tried using the same attachment this guy did, and the bayonet still fell off the 590 after 9-11shots. The back lock part of the lug was always a bit jiggly. Not so for an AR-15 rifle-for which these bayonets were designed (bayonet fit my AR perfectly-AND STAYED ON AFTER EVERY SHOT). I still love my Mossberg 590 as a shotgun, and wouldn’t give it up for the world. But based on my experience, I can safely say that the bayonet lug is just a gimmick for looks, not practicality.

Big blades are great for chopping wood and making bad ass movies. Thin pointy blades go in easy and deep then come out easy. If you stick that fat blade where someones body will suck on it your going to have a problem getting it out. Better be wearing a big boot or still have some rounds in the tube. The best bayonet ever made for sticking & retrieval is a Chinese spike.
@Bret928
@Bret928 7 жыл бұрын
Why thank you for your insight. Fact is - it's just an intimidation factor. But hey someone would have to get past the 9 rounds of 00 buck before they'd have to worry about getting stabbed. But back to your advice - are you saying the Army and the Marine Corps made a mistake going with the Bigger Blades like the OKC3S and the M9? Pray tell - why didn't you tell them this back when they made those poor decisions? I'm sure they would've appreciated you knowledge & advice and acted accordingly. Think of all those millions of US Tax dollars lost on those bayonet contracts. ;)
@63grandsport11
@63grandsport11 7 жыл бұрын
So some one has an opinion about a type of blade stuck on the end of a weapon and you make the decision to turn it into a personal attack. Pay attention here...You have a problem sticking to my point which was the performance of a narrow blade vs fat blade which YOU totally ignored, try discussing this with someone who has first hand knowledge someday. Lets just look at how you see things. Your Quote not mine "One of the things that first attracted me to the Mossberg 590 was it could take a standard M7 bayonet". That says everything needed to be known since you have already determined you will NEVER need anything past 9 rounds and bayonet intimidation doesn't work well in the dark unless you plan on telling someone you have that really big knife. As far as Military's go. Who ever saw one that didn't like to spend tax payers money.
@Bret928
@Bret928 7 жыл бұрын
I admit I was being sarcastic - but it wasn't meant as a "personal attack" as you suggested. I was just in response to your "snarky" comment. But you go ahead and take it any way you wish. That said - I was simply pointing out that the US Military disagreed with you about larger bayonets and had adopted the Army's M9 and the OKC3S for the Marines. Fact is - the tired old M7 was woefully inadequate and was frankly prone to breakage because it was so fragile & brittle. BTW this opinion is based on personal experience. Sure you can question the US Military's vast wisdom & decades of experience if you like or even mine for that matter. But it doesn't change the fact that they and I (a Marine) disagree with you. Again that's not a dig on you - just stating a fact. Now if you're done being butthurt because I pointed this out - feel free to point out why you like the Chinese spike and how you'd go about affixing one to your shotgun?
@63grandsport11
@63grandsport11 7 жыл бұрын
Snarky would be the use of the word "butthurt" after admitting being sarcastic. I must have pushed your man button having never thought of what I brought up. Nothing I said was snarky, I made a single point That being the entry of a bayonet blade into a body. Comparing a single purpose fighting tool to a multi purpose tool. I compared blade types to entry wounds that's it. I don't really care what the military does I already fought my war and I wouldn't make the point that something was the right way to do it just because someone sitting on their fat ass selling contracts thought they should do it. You must be the first grunt in US history that ever thought US military had vast amounts of wisdom...This is really special. If I decided to mount a Chinese style bayonet on weapon I would just get it done. Admit it we really know why you like this big man blade...you think its bad ass.

Not denying my love for bayonets - I am a Marine after all - so sue me. And yes - they are badass! As for me being the first "Grunt" - for the sake of full disclosure - I was actually an Airwinger - I wasn't infantry. I usually had my ass hanging out the door of a Huey with an M-60D next to me. But we all started out the same and went through the same basic training - so I guess I come by it naturally. Not sure what your background is "Team Hansen Honda" or if you've ever had any military background - but I suspect the Military's vastly more experience on the topic than you have. But perhaps "wisdom" wasn't the best choice of words on my part - so I'll give you that. But to your point about "pike" or "spike" types of combat blades have been long considered better for "fighting" blades. Example - before the Marines adopted their beloved KABAR fighting knife - they toyed with the idea of using a commando dagger/knife blade - but the problem was it was a dedicated fighting blade and not remotely utilitarian. Not idea for other duties (like "chopping wood") that soldiers and Marines might encounter in the field. In fact we found the commando blades to be utterly worthless for any of those more mundane tasks. And I suspect that has long been one of the determining factors behind most modern bayonets by most militaries around the globe since the early 20th Century. As they know that their troops will be using them for other duties besides just affixing to the end of their rifles for close combat. Marines in my era typically carried two different blades. A fighting knife - like the KABAR and a M7 Bayonet for their rifle. Looking at the new Ontario blades - from my perspective it's easy to see that the military procurement folks had this in mind. Trying to take two pieces of gear and combining them into one. Thus - one less thing our troops have to carry into combat. Still - I knew plenty of Marines who still covet the KABAR even if they do have the new USMC Bayonet. But again if you think I was "attacking" you - sure - by all means - do whatever you want.
