In this video I show my new Motor Guard air compressor filter I’m using in my home garage for painting my projects at home. The Motor Guard filter will work well with small compressors as well as big compressors and is great for the DIY person.

Just ordered mine today. Thanks, King. Im prepping to do my first paint job on my FD RX-7. Never noticed how much water was coming out of my lines. Not until using my DA sander for a long period of time. Was thinking about throwing in the towel so i didn't ruin the car. You gave me hope.Thanks again💪🏿

Nice video. Another suggestion for a home setup to save and extend the life of your tank would be adding an aftercooler to your compressor. Compressor head > condenser > air water separator > back into the tank. This will capture a vast majority of the water before it even hits your tank. Saves the tank and will extend all the media from the compressor out to your tool.

Not so sure leaving the filter with fluid in it causes the coating to go bad. If the coating goes bad when the filter has water in it you get the corrosion..My experience is converting the compressed air filters to filter fuel ATF and motor oil. Why the coating sometimes fails I dont know. Why the coating can last 200.000 miles in gasoline on the Camry and submerged in oil and ATF on the Camry with no coating problems and I get a picture and complaint from an internet customer. Also the coating fails on the Farmall tractor gasoline.very soon. For awhile I was removing the coating with engine cleaner. Some customers were removing the coating with carb cleaner. It was easier to use a different filter company. When I removed the coating I wondered how the slick surface could hold the coating. You painters would be doing something to the surface to hold the coating.. I know some users are re coating the filters. Some are professional powder coaters. Ive read posts. They prepare the surface.To do it right would probably be expensive.
@ralphwood8818
@ralphwood8818 Жыл бұрын
It seems to me the water or fuel in the filter is looking for a weak place in the coating. No problem for fuel. Water is bad news. Only happened once with gasoline. I tossed it in engine cleaner and removed the rest of the coating. A customer had a problem with transmission fluid. He took care of it himself.

Word of WARNING: I have the M-60 filter unit, similar to the M-30. It works well at trapping moisture but you MUST open it up at least once a week to let it air out. I am a DIY'er and opened up my M-60 after about 6 months for a quick check and it was so corroded inside the aluminum housing I had to literally cut the filter out. The housing is shot. Once it traps moisture it stays there. I thought Motor Guard was powder coating these housings but it performs more like paint. My opinion. So moisture is quick to attack and do its damage. So be sure to open it weekly and dry things out.

I ran a M 60 for about 200.000 miles on the Camry gasoline. The coating is still in great shape. The coating in the Tractor gasoliine turned loose from the aluminum in a short time.. The origional Motor Guard was a lube oil filter. All metal with no coating. Ran one of the origional compressed air filters for many years on a Case tractor. lube oil. The origional compressed air filter had a light color.. After years you could see some aluminum showing thru. At one time Motor Guard was the best oil filter you could buy. I have a couple over 50 years old. All I have now is the Jackmaster Classic Motor Guards and Gulf Coasts Converted a flat head Ford canister filter to use a 4 1/2 inch roll of Scott 1000 toilet paper. They were all designed to use toilet paper. I use Great Value 1000 from Walmart. Some use Scott 1000. I dont drain oil. When I was converting the compressed air filters to lube oil and selling them I sometimes got complaimts of the coatings failing.. Asked Motor Guard for uncoated filters. That was the last straw. Removing the coating and using toilet paper instead of their elements. I got tired of tossing the filters in my drum of engine cleaner. Too messy.
@ralphwood8818
@ralphwood8818 Жыл бұрын
When I was selling them if I sold 50 and the coating failed on one of them I was not happy. If the coating fails I want it to fail on my stuff. Also the problem with using Scott 1000 is you have to unroll too much paper. The last Great Value 1000 I got from Walmart was the same diameter as the Motor Guard element. It changes. If the paper pinches in the gasket its probably too big.. The important seal is at the bottom and around the core at the bottom. Doesnt hurt to have a few around with glue on the last sheet.Motor Guard uses tape.
@ralphwood8818
@ralphwood8818 Жыл бұрын
The water is looking for a weak place in the coating so it can attack the aluminum. It cant find a weak place in the coating if you dont leave a wet element in it. With petroleum products the aluminum wont be attacked but the coating sometimes loses its grip on the aluminum. Why I wish I knew.

The Motor Guard started as a lube oil filter in 1961. I have a over 50 year old one on my F 250 with the 390 engine. It uses Great Value 1000 sheet toilet paper. From Walmart. They were all designed to use toilet paper. If you see a light colored one it might be from the 60s. If you are dealing with a lot of water you will need a good water seperater.Its not a water seperator We used them for instrument air at work. We had refrigerated air dryers at work.

Out here on the west coast we had the Franz filter for autos that used a roll of toilet paper as a filter cartridge. My dad put one on a brand new ‘72 F-100 that he drove for 15 years. It probably had over 200K on it when he sold it.

I started with a Frantz in 1963. The Motor Guard started in San Jose. California. The lube oil Motor Guard was all metal with 1/8 pipe ports and no coating. Just put a used M30 on the tractor hydraulic system. I had installed metal parts in it. Sometimes the coating fails. On this one the inside coating is still good. It is starting to get a blister on the outside. Ran a M 60 on the Camry gasoline for several years. The coating looks new inside.. The coating. Failed on a M 60 on the Farmall gasoline. Never had a problem with motor oil. Yes they were designed to use toilet paper. One guy on KZfaq said the reason they got the nick name toilet paper filters is people started using toilet paper in them instead of the proper Motor Guard elements.

I worked in the paint department at Ford. My 76 F250 still has a decent paint job except for the drivers door. It has no paint. Im wondering if they were short a painted door on the assembly line and painted one without acidizing it. It takes time for the parts to get the oil removed and acidized then go thru the dryer. Im guessing it might have still had oil on it.

Didnt realize how much stuff they have now. Saw one the same color as the origional. Some large aircraft makers are using Motor Guards. I think I remember dentists were buying them. I have them on every engine and transmission I have except a few that have Gulf Coast juniors the Australian Jackmaster Classic and the flat head Ford comversion.only had one where the coating failed. The gasoline didn't break down the coating but it made the coating turn loose of the aluminum. I normally dont drain oil. I change the toilet paper and add a quart of oil. For oil I have to add a 1/16 inch orifice and Aircraft aluminum internal parts. Now days there excellent oil filters that you dont need to modify . You can probably find a Motor Guard lube oil filter. The Frantz is a terrible design as far as servicing but they will take toilet paper. I prefer the top loaders

At Ford in the 60s we had furnace filters on the walls with water going down thru them. Painters would push vasoline up into their noses. At the end of the shift the vasoline and paint would be dug out of the noses. Had a problem with thin paint on parts of the fenders and hoods and whiskers in the paint. Gabby had a beard and chewed tobacco. When he turned to spit he missed a stroke.

Its the same old story . The more water is in the air the more often you need to change the Motor Guard. If your Motor Guard gets full of water you will be painting with a.water and paint mix.. If you live in New Orleans you might need a big water seperator upstream. At work I always tried to keep zero water from reaching the Motor Guard. We even filtered nitrogen. The big air compressor that supplied the plant had a Motor Guard M 30 cleaning the expensive oil. The Motor Guard was cleaning a mixture of oil and compressed air..It also had a big Micro Guard full flow filter that was there to catch anything big. The M 30 was there to get the small stuff and water. A lot of work for a little filter. Sent oil samples to the compressor company to be analized. It was under warranty. When I changed the big filter I made a mount for it and put it on the suction of the home made hydraulc system on the Farmall H. 1 1/2 inch ports The reason water didnt over load the M 30s was an air dryer as big as a refrigerator was there. Most were M 60s in the pipe systm
