Excelente motor.

Thanks. I repair auto trans's for a living. Honda, Mitzy, Subaru, and now Toyota. I think manual 'boxes are prob more durable, given that I see many needle bearing failures in auto trans. In fact, that, and heat, are the main causes of failure. Luftwaffe lol. You know the timing belt was first used in Germany on the Glas car, in the '60s. I suspect Jerry didn't worry about OHC, so no need for chains or belts. Cheers.

Gears are more durable and reliable,especially in keeping very critical valve timing. Diesel engines aren't known for being gentle on parts,the gear drive to the cams is a really good idea. Valve timing changes from cam chain wear and stretch is becoming something engine builders are starting to worry about now, Cam timing has become very critical,I imagine seeing more gear drive cams eventually.

I just checked F1 FIA regulations. Rule 5.17.7 c states "Timing gears between the crankshaft and camshafts (including hubs) must be manufactured from an iron based alloy." So you're right. But thats on high (revs) performance engines. But unless diesels overcome 10k RPM, chain maybe good enough & cheaper for regular cars?!

I love the idea of a V10 TDI but the fuel economy is terrible, the engine is overly complex and the emissions are even worse: Plasma liners mean that engine block needs to be discarded if there is any damage to the cylinder walls. A traditional cast iron in aluminum design has been used without any issues for a long time. Damn thing has more gears in the front of the motor than an old time clock.
@carlosreyes36202 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't someone be able to make some iron sleeves to install?
@brarautorepairs2 жыл бұрын
@@carlosreyes3620 reportedly this has been done for Honda engines that had FRM liners but the point of the plasma liners is to allow a smaller block size overall. The thin liners wouldn't allow for an iron liner with the same displacement engine. Your pistons would also get smaller.
@carlosreyes36202 жыл бұрын
@@brarautorepairs would someone be able to engineer smaller pistons to fill the sleeved iron walls?
@brarautorepairs2 жыл бұрын
@@carlosreyes3620 Yes, you could have custom pistons created for the smaller bore. You would loose displacement.

If, by chance a timing belt did come in contact with some harsh chemical, it could possibly swell. I suppose newer belts are HCN, but still; gears to an engine like gears to a watch. There are quiet gears. I imagine future cams will be driven with servo-motors, and receive a wireless signal from the CPS. An 'indestructible' timing belt with a 50 yr. warranty? Now that's perfect ! Perhaps all those gears is a joke ?
@Eldomibori5 жыл бұрын
What a nightmare. So many moving parts that can fail. Imagine blowing the engine. And or replacing a water pump or compressor. You would have to take half the engine apart. These engines are incredibly over engineered and complicated. It may be nice for the first 50,000 miles, but just wait until an engine component fails.
