You were lucky with your cylinder. I recently pulled one off of a K 75, which was so badly corroded that the piston was frozen into the outer housing. It’s resisted every attempt from hammering to pressing in a vice to the point where we just ordered a new master cylinder. By the way, I keep a handlebar mounted MC to use in pumping out caliper pistons and stubborn MC pistons. It usually works unless totally corroded.

Thanks for the video, it helped me rebuild my Brembo 15/16 rear for my "ran when parked a decade ago" '84 Moto Guzzi V65SP. The only thing additionally I had to do was seat the seal /tapered washer assembly with a deep socket. The barrel of the Brembo body is stepped. Also the Guzzi Brembo has a plastic piston stop which fits before/inside the spring. I got the seating procedure from a Guzzi Forum.

English Translation: The last washer replaces the circlip that holds the assembly inside the pump. To assemble it you have to press the pump shaft all the way and with a long glass, place it on the inside of the last washer and hit it until it fits into its housing.

Excellent instructions as always. I was finding that the assembly just kept on popping out under the spring pressure. I noted the slight step inside the bore where the outer seal and stiffening ring have to push in. I found a plastic tube that fit exactly over the stiffening ring and could tap it home into its seat....not sure how you managed just to push it home?

I am stumped. I have the parts in correct order, but have two issues. First is, what holds the front seal washer, seal & stiffening ring from backing out? It appears to have nothing except maybe some vacuum from the piston’s action to keep it there. My second issue is that now on reassembly, (a second time), with the piston fully bottomed out, (the spring fully compressed), the actuating arm pin holes are abt. .5mm from lining up, thus I cannot get them together, and if I did, there would be ZERO movement available with the actuation are (because the piston is fully bottomed out). Darn. I’ll go attempt another reassemble & see if anything has changed.

Did you not have to press the seal/stiffener ring into the location recess after inserting the piston?
@craigb3548
@craigb3548 4 жыл бұрын
Yes . That seal casing is an interference fit and needs to be tapped in with a suitable tube of about 19.5mm diameter. The actuation end of the piston will be about 4mm in from the end of the housing when fitted. Also what wasn't shown was the spring retainer that goes into the cylinder first.(Usually in the kit, but not shown.)
@Tall-Guy
@Tall-Guy 3 жыл бұрын
@@craigb3548 I agree with you about the seal needing to be tapped in but I believe the 1981 to 1984 bikes didn't have a spring retainer.

I am rebuilding a R65LS front brake master cylinder, the book said to clean both holes, mine has one hole drilled through from the reservoir and one partially drilled, not through. Should there be two holes drilled through from the reservoir??
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 3 жыл бұрын
James, one hole feeds fluid from the reservoir to the plunger that pressurizes the brake line. The other hole lets fluid return from the line to the reservoir. Usually the smaller hole is the fluid return. That said, I've not worked on the R65 bikes and have no direct knowledge of how the front brake master cylinder goes together, but it looks to be similar to the one used on my 1983 R100RS/RT bike, but I didn't rebuild the front master cylinder so I never had an opportunity to inspect inside the master cylinder.

as you know have always been watching & appreciating your videos- Is there a way to check the efficiency of the master cylinder hydraulic oil pressure on a gauge ? is there any Data available indicating how much PSI of hydraulic oil pressure must it measure on the gauge to check efficiency of the master cylinder- i have a friends BMW whose brakes need an overhaul so in order to establish the fault in either the cylinder or the calliper i thought this test could help me to diagnose the problem correctly !!! I keep learning watching your videos ! keep it up
@BrooksAirheadGarage

Hi Rahul, I have no information on the pressure created by the master cylinder. As I show on my website, when I disassemble the master cylinder I check for corrosion on the inside. If there are pits and a lot of corrosion, I replace it. If it's minor scratching and light rust, I use 600 wet dry paper on a suitable sized drill bit to lightly hone the inside of the cylinder. That said, these are the brakes and they are critical safety items. If you have any doubt about the condition of a master cylinder, you should replace it.

Does anyone know if the area under the plastic nipple where the brake fluid comes in has two holes or just one? Mine has one obvious open hole, but looks like it has another. I cant tell if it needs to be cleaned out or if its just a shut hole.

There is a tiny port into the cylinder which is counter-bored to 1/8". Same diameter as the port at the lever side of the primary seal. The tiny port allows fluid to enter from the fluid tank to the spring end of the piston. Often blocks off with aluminium oxide corrosion. So yes there are Two.

If there is any noticeable pitting in the bore can it be salvaged?
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Gaylord, Small scratches can be removed using 600 grit wet/dry paper as I show on the web page documentation via the link in the video summary. Deeper pits can not be removed this way. If you have those, a new master cylinder is in order.

Hi the team! Thanks for this video! I would like to know if the piston(15.87mm) can be replaced instead of the 14.29mm? Is it compatible in this way?
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexandre, BMW changed the master cylinder piston size in the 1981 model year (09/1980) to the smaller piston (14.29 mm). The smaller master cylinder requires less foot pressure but more foot motion to achieve the same stopping force on the disk. If you use the large master cylinder, you will have to push harder to get the same stopping force on the disk. Other than that, I believe the two master cylinders will work.

hey brook, i'm trying to bleed my R100 rear brake that has a steel-braided line from the caliper to cylinder. It seems I can't advance the brake fluid from either the reservoir side or caliper side through the system. Removing the braided line from the cylinder and placing my thumb over the cylinder opening, I can feel pressure and suction when actuating the brake pedal, however no fluid travels through. Might the issue be within the cylinder or from the piston? I have not opened it up...
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Geoffography, Since you have an aftermarket brake line, be aware many of them do not hold up well. There are some that it's easy to damage, particularly when removing the rear master cylinder. There is a small diameter tube in the core and on some of these braided steel lines, it gets kinked which blocks the fluid from passing through the hose. If you get pressure from the master cylinder when you push the piston, then I would suspect there is an obstruction in the brake line. Hope that helps.
@geoffography
@geoffography 4 жыл бұрын
Thx! I tried to vacuum draw from the brake line submerged in brake fluid towards the caliper, went until bubbles went away, then separately hooked up a pressure bleeder to the caliper and pushed fluid back out the loosened banjo bolt at the cylinder end before capping it off. Ended up getting decent brake action only after leaving the caliper on rotor and using the pump to push brake fluid into the caliper, pushing pads against rotor, then released pump pressure and let out "excess" fluid through bleed bolt to free up pads from rotor.

Whats the extra port on the bottom of the reservoir for?
@BrooksAirheadGarage
@BrooksAirheadGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brady: The second port is solid, as in it has no hole inside, and is not used. It's possible this reservoir is used in other applications where Brembo has it feed two master cylinders. Brembo would drill it out in that case. This is just an uninformed guess on my part.
