Motorhome Window Still LEAKS or Could it be a Condensation Problem?

It rained a lot over the weekend and in the morning we found that the windows appeared to still leak. So I'm investigating the problem checking if is water ingress or condensation.
We aim to publish a video each week, every Sunday at 4pm (UK time).

Hi We had it in our caravan and we solved it by leaving the windows open a crack and also leaving our lockers open to stop a moisture build up Internal heat compared to low outside temperature is a caravan/motorhome nightmare Good luck 🤞

During winter I remove all liquids from cupboards and open all cupboard doors throughout motorhome, then open the large skylight a little bit to allow air flow throughout habitation area and that significantly reduced any condensation issues

Hi Ads. The joys and pleasures of an older van eh ? We had water coming in from a roof seal that we have had sorted to satisfaction. Last week whilst touring North Yorkshire, our motorised double step stopped working. We can hear the motor working, but the steps neither drop out or retract. I have received one piece of advice from an experienced camper in Norway. the advice was to keep 5 degrees Celsius inside the motorhome throughout the winter, because then the transition from minus degrees to plus degrees will not be so great. the frost does not settle in the walls. I have the same problem as you describe inside the garage in the winter.

1 - ventilation . 2 - electric heater in wall. 3 - insulation. 4 - stop breathing and cooking.

i keep near my windows the small dehumidifiers in winter works a treat also keep a small heater radiator in there i put t on twice a week to dry and keep the tep up hope this helps donny

Hi Adz.Yup condensation.Polystyrene is not the best insulation so 1st I'd replace what you can get to behind the cupboard with Celotex or similar, series of cuts to shape to the substrate, bond it and tape it up with metal tape to create a vapour barrier.The metal window frame is acting as a cold bridge not sure what you can do about that other than changing to an all plastic unit or increasing ventilation and managing it that way.Good luck

What about disposable dehumidifiers that you can get from Amazon?

I'd thought about that but they only work when it's warm and they aren't very fast

I found exactly the same with the curved roof on mine. And also the main roof. Bought some self adhesive 6mm high density foam and stuck it to any exposed fibreglass areas... Seems to have worked.

Get the same problem at this time of year - try and leave cupboard doors etc open when not using it

To me, it looks like the biggest issue is stopping the moisture-laden inside air from comng into contact with the uninsulated fibreglass area above the window I guess you could put some better insulation on the fibreglass to prevent moisture having a cold surface to condense on. I would alao incorporate a moisturise barrier of some sort to stop the moisture from coming into contact with the insulation. You can get sheets of self adhesive foam with reflective bqcking. A single continuous piece of this might do the job?

On the VW Csmper windows the condensation that accumulates on the inside should run to the bottom of the window and on the black frame there should be weep holes and a channel for it to run into then flows outside of the frame and down the side of the van. Does your window have weep lines/holes on the inside bottom that might be blocked? Also, gave you enough vents on the van and are they open?

I don't think so, @kinross24. We have a roof light at the back and one in the bathroom. Air can escape through them even when closed

Problem is there is an air gap between the glass fibre and the polystyrene, any insulation needs to be bonded to glass fibre, and ideally a vapour barrier but it would be difficult to achieve 100% barrier, if it was me I'd try spray foam, but it's messy if you are not used to it.

Many different ones in the likes of B&Q or builders merchants, I normally get my supplies from Screwfix, as I said can be very messy if you are not used to using as it expands after application, would be good to practice first if you choose this option, alternative is if you can find some self adhesive foam, the idea is to not have any air gap behind insulation

maybe could use someting like the silver foil insulation like the stuff they use for the window covers to keep the sun out of cars as its thin and should fit where the polystyrene was another thing i have heard is people using cork sheet as its a great insulator

I wonder if the Condensation your getting and been having for years is also the cause of your rot problem that you had in your Ski locker that you and Chaz repaired a couple of years ago? If it is then you may want to look at the floor beneath your shower to see what that is like. Easier said than done I know. We get really bad build up of condensation on our windows on Nessa even with the front insulation cover fitted, the windscreen is still really bad in the colder months. I do have a bit of rot in a small side panel in the garage that I do need to sort out, not sure if that is down to wheel spray as we don't see any condensation on the walls or doors of the garage, but we do see a bit of water on the floor just as you open the door it is the only area that I so see any water. we have a drain right near it too, but the floor there is sound.

Don't hang wet washing inside..make sure sink is empty of water..check to see that fresh water tank isn't leaking? Above all improve the ventilation..get rid of any humid air trapped inside before you leave the van by opening several windows for a few minutes

you could try bonding window in or install a small air vent

Thanks @powderpuff1964 but the window is bonded in or maybe I don't understand what you mean. Yes, ventilation is probably the answer however there is plenty of ventilation coming from the rear roof light - maybe not enough!!?
