An ascent of the elusive West Fury of Washington's Picket Range. West Fury, slightly higher and much more difficult to attain than its more popular eastern sibling, is regarded as one of the most remote places in the Lower 48. It is also on Washington's "Difficult 10 List", the state's 10 hardest peaks to reach by their easiest route.

Thanks for the beta on the traverse! We were able to snag #25 the next morning. Such a sweet summit. Hopefully I'll be able to whip a video together in the next few days.

45 years ago we made the 25th and 26th ascent of East Fury (two teams, two routes -- the standard route for most of the group and the Direct East Ridge for our team). West Fury had (as far as we could make out) at point only been climbed once and we kind of looked at the traverse and thought about it, but it looked kind of dicey and we decided against it. Still, it would have been fun to make the 2nd ascent of a major mountain. Thanks for the video, it brought back memories.

Definitely the best video I have seen from the Pickets Range. Perhaps your most captivating video yet. Really incredible footage, great for people who want to see what it's like in there. This is video is so good, I'm going to watch it again.

Sorry but West Fury is lower than East Fury. Eric Gilbertson, a professor of mechanical engineering at Seattle University, carried a theodolite to the false summit of Luna Peak. He then did a survey of East and West Fury and Luna. Results: East Fury 8,356ft +/-8ft, West Fury 8,305ft +/-10ft, Luna 8,311ft (per USGS survey). See kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZZ-bNloxtmrnJs.html. West Fury is still a good climb though.

I’m aware of Eric’s surveying. I know him personally. This trip was nearly 4 years ago. We also climbed E Fury on this trip, as you have to go over it to get to West Fury.
