I understand what you're saying, but she shouldn't have tried to compare her bad days to his. She obviously ment no harm. Sometimes we all think we are helping but we just say the wrong things.

Lexy Ruse This is true. Her bad days will never be as bad as his but something i feel a lot of people forget is as the “normal” sibling, you don’t just get out of all of it scot-free. Whether you agree or not, if you have a sibling with any form of disability or special needs, your life as their sibling is forever changed. I honestly believe that Via’s experience is a very realistic depiction of what its like to have a sibling who isn’t “normal” because while your life is never as bad as theirs, its not normal either. You walk out of restaurants because its too loud and your sibling, who has a sensory processing disorder, cant handle it. You forgive your parents for not turning up to your school panto because your sibling, who has leukaemia, has had to be rushed to hospital. You deal with it when your sibling yells at you and tells you you could never understand when all you’re trying to do is cheer them up. These are three different, possible examples of the life of someone like Via. It’s not the same experience but it should also be recognised as “not easy”. I could recite studies at you that talk about the effects-positive and negative-of having a sibling with severe special needs on the “normal” sibling or how their personality will forever be shaped by simply being born into the same family as someone who has different needs but I won’t because this is already a long comment. I sympathise a lot with Via and so I find myself getting unnecessarily angry when I see people criticise her or her actions because, love it or hate it, it’s a realistic experience. People aren’t perfect and Via already deals with a lot. But I also understand Auggie’s reaction. He’s right. While Via can lie about being an only child, he has no such luck. He can never escape, can never hide. He’s 10 years old and already dealing with the reality that his life will always be filled with stares and muttered comments and thats *hard* at such a young age. Someone will always have it worse. The worst pain you’ve ever felt will never be as high as someone else’s. Just because someone has it worse, doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to hurt too.

Yeah it's actually pretty refreshing. When I saw this in theatres for the first time ever, I literally had no idea it was then gonna give us her perspective. I was pleasantly surprised.

And I feel so bad for her, she lost her grandmother, her best friend betrayed her, her parents are always concerned about Auggie (which is understandable ofc, but she has the right to feel bad), and when she finally gets some time to spend with her mom, that too gets taken away. She handled her feelings pretty well in my opinion. I'm glad she found someone like Justin who loves her and accepts her brother.

Via really had a point though. They both struggle, and yes Auggies is technically worse but the thing is you can’t compare your bad day to someone else’s, your emotions are valid and literally even if your worst problem on that day is that you ran out of milk or something and didn’t have time to go to the shop to get some more, sure it’s pretty trivial but feel what you feel, don’t let anyone put you down for it but it also don’t take it out on others. I have literally cried because the butter wasn’t soft enough and I couldn’t spread it on my bread properly and it ripped, stupid but I felt what I needed to feel in that moment and got over it
