Do your mower blades fail to engage when you pull the PTO switch up? If so, check this video out, I will try and help.
I have found a NEW voltmeter(not the Fluke in the video) that is really handy and I highly recommend it; it's a DVOM with an integrated DC amp clamp. I use the meter for automotive use too - great for diagnosing starter and charging systems!

I bought a 2008 RZT 50 for $250 (in 2020)because the guy replace the pto and still didn't fix it. After finding a schematic, I trace it down to both reverse switch were bad. Only took a half hour to find it. Just jumping both was all I had to do. Actually all I had to do was to jump one of them to get it to work. The diagram show that if both handle are pulled back it means you are in reverse. Home owners version of mowers need to shut off the blade in reverse. Now I think I need to rebuild both Trans. Keep those videos coming.

I've been trouble shooting a gifted JD z425 that sat for two years. Not trying to spend money I don't have too. Ohm'd out the clutch at 1.4 after popping a 20amp. Looks like the previous owner did the same thing as the wiring diagram shows it as a 5 amp fuse. Looks like I'm ordering a new clutch. Thank you so much.

Vary good vid. . I work on mowers as well and good at . I been doing it for the past 18 years . I came across a real problem about a iffy PTO . It test good then after few engagements and blew 2 switches I think you solved the problem . Bad PTO . I suspected this all along but not for sure . The problem and what made it difficult is that one day the pto work fine the it would blow a switch then a new switch blow in less than a minute . The customer had told me . All I have to say thanks for the great advice .

Got a zero turn in the shop doing the same thing. Customer said the blades came on for a few seconds then shut off. He replaced fuse. Blew the fuse again. He put in a bigger fuse. It burned out the PTO switch. That’s when he brought it to me. First thing I did was check resistance through the clutch. It was at 0.5 ohms. Boom, done, internal short inside the clutch. Replaced clutch. Problem solved.

Hey Hillbilly Rig, just came across this video looking for a resolution to my PTO issue. I have a 2014 Cub Cadet RZT 50 i bought off another user. A month after buying it, started having PTO issues. When you are mowing, while the blades are engaged and you put in reverse (PTO automatically cuts off in reverse for these), after going out of reverse, the blades will not engage. You would have to tap on the deck to get the blades to re-engage while riding. (This didn't happen everytime for putting in reverse but every so often). Now, about 2 weeks ago, while mowing, the blades just disengaged and wouldn't come back on for anything. Got a multimeter and tested for continuity and didn't have any in the switch. I replaced the switch and all seemed good. However, after about 10 to 15 mins of mowing, the blades would not engage again after putting in reverse. Ordered a new PTO clutch online, replaced yesterday and it seemed to be running like new. It even felt smoother after engaged the PTO button. However, after we were mowing for about 45 mins, it did the same thing again where the blades wouldn't reengage after putting in reverse. Turned it back on this morning and they engaged, but it seems to do this when the mower is running for a while. We have a new switch and a new PTO clutch. Any other ideas what the issue may be?

Find the reverse safety switch’s-they may be out of adjustment, need cleaned or have a wiring issue. The switch will either be normally open or normally closed. I would guess they are disrupting power to the PTO. Just follow the wires 👍

Can you hear the Clutch engaging(“clicking”) on and off each time you pull the PTO switch up? If I’m forced to guess.. sounds like the “air gap” between clutch discs could need adjusting; 3 nuts on bottom of clutch-mark each with a pen and turn clockwise 1/4 turn at a time. Need to tighten evenly. Check and repeat. I would really recommend a feeler gauge. Good luck!

Have a 2006 M60 Tank. Had a new clutch from dealer put on probably 4 years ago, about 300 hours. Recently, after mowing for a while, if I turn off the PTO, I can't get it to come back on. One sneaky way to get it to come back on, is after I pull it back on and nothing happens, if I push the rpm level all the way to low, then push it back up to high (full throttle) the pto will come back on every time. This only happens after mowing for a while, with this intermittant PTO. What should I check? Saw you posted a reply that said this, would this apply to my 2006 M60 tank? (Can you hear the Clutch engaging(“clicking”) on and off each time you pull the PTO switch up? If I’m forced to guess.. sounds like the “air gap” between clutch discs could need adjusting; 3 nuts on bottom of clutch-mark each with a pen and turn clockwise 1/4 turn at a time. burtmanindustries Perform a quick voltage drop test on the clutch circuit also verify clutch has a good ground. Be sure to SAFELY test circuit while the mower is acting up. Then look at the clutch-if it’s black and has three bolts holding it together, it’s likely an adjustable clutch. If this is the case go to Ogura website and lookup clutch air gap specifications. Check gap with feeler gauge. **Harbor Freight sells a strong 1/2 electric impact wrench; if you’re looking to replace clutch yourself. Any excuse to buy a new tool ;)

working on a Simplicity ZT3000B2450 with a Briggs engine, i had bought this mower, rebuilt the LH trans, started it and everything was fine until i engaged the blades, had a strong draw down in power, shutter and then it shut off, plenty of compression, fire to plugs and fuel, problem i have now is that i have NO power to PTO switch or hour meter, and when i turn switch to start, nothing...all 5 safety switches check, i have taken off the whole wire harness thinking i might have a bad wire, but it occurred to me after watching this video that i haven't checked the clutch to see if it shorted the switch because it is bad... Could this be the case, can a bad clutch fry the engage switch and cause it to act like the safety switch is bad???? thx tony

BrezzEasyy I would start with a wiring diagram. The clutch for the mower blades needs both power and ground to function. I would buy 2 piercing probes(1 for each wire) then connect jumper leads to each probe. Connect a test light in series with the jumpers. To check the clutch ground, connect test light to power. To test the power feed connect the test light to ground(negative battery terminal etc) Have the test light where you can see it(on your lap) and when you go over 3 miles an hour or whatever and the blades kick off, that test light will go out. If you’re losing the ground side of the circuit-hunt that done. Power side-same thing. Be safe. Make your own test leads with alligator clips and wire if you want.

The model, serial and spec. number should be on a silver sticker located on plastic blower housing of engine. If that’s missing. Try and contact Great Dane(or the company that bought them) with the model and serial number of mower. Lastly, take the mower up to a dealership that carry kohlers. Try calling Kohler too. I don’t believe these engines are stamped-maybe under the crank pulley 🤔

I would say-gain access to the switch and have a test light ready. When the clutch won’t engage after you pull the PTO switch up, clamp one end of test light to a ground(or battery ground) the other to the wire coming out of PTO switch connector that leads to the clutch. The test light should light each time you pull the PTO switch.

I’d say disconnect connector to clutch(2wire connector near clutch)-then start the mower. If the blades are spinning with the clutch disconnected I would suspect mechanical fault with clutch. Second issue is likely in your safety switches and/or wiring causing your ignition coil or coils to ground out-shutting off the mower.

@Zeus 1 to be clear.... the engage/disengage pull switch for the blade.... that is the only thing that makes sense, if it is bad it will make the blades try to spin upon starting. There is also a clutch on the engine somewhere that could cause it.... but like I said, i never got a chance to fix it.

I have a 2009 Cub Cadet 48" ZTR that I thought had a switch problem. I installed it. it ran for over half an hr and when I went to turn the mower back on, the blades wouldn't engage again. Does this mean the mower blew the switch out and I have to buy another one? Does it also mean that my clutch may be causing the switch to blow. I'm no mechanic but I get by with simple fixes, but I am not sure I can handle putting in a clutch if that is what it is. I also noticed, right before it totally wouldn't engage, that moving the left lap bar made the blades turn again, but that only lasted a few seconds.
@hillbillyrigrepairs1814
@hillbillyrigrepairs1814 5 жыл бұрын
Greg Taylor Yes. A partially shorted clutch can keep blowing out switches. The likely culprit is the clutch. If you have a hand, air or 1/2 cordless impact taking the clutch off isn’t bad. Just need to remove deck belt, the clutch brake assembly, electrical connector and finally the bolt that goes through the clutch and threads into the crankshaft. You may have to get creative getting the clutch off the crankshaft; they like to get stuck.

With cover off, we turn the mower on and tried to engage blades. It worked fine. we tried few times and it worked every time. After putting the plastic cover on, blade won't turn. You do hear the clutch engaging when you have key in run position. Appears there must be a safety switch that may have loose connection... Any suggestions??

@hillbillyrigrepairs1814 4 жыл бұрын
Use a test light to see if you’re losing power or ground at clutch connector. You may have “accidentally” fixed the mower by messing with connectors. It may also have been a coincidence. Clip test light to battery negative, turn to run, engage pto(hear it click). Shove test light into each side of clutch connector. When test light lights, that’s your power feed. Then move test light clip to battery positive. When you touch the other wire(ground) it should light. Then attack whichever side of circuit is faulty.

Hey Boss, got a question - not sure if you are familiar with Toros or not - I got a Z500 Z Master 2012 toro - And the engine runs smooth , but whenever i try to activate the PTO switch - blades will not run and my engine shutdowns. Is this a result of a bad PTO Clutch?
@hillbillyrigrepairs1814
@hillbillyrigrepairs1814 4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the kill relay is being switched and grounding out your ignition coils. You could remove the engine cover(it’s not too bad) to gain access to both ignition coils-there should be a single white wire to each module-disconnect both those white wires. See if that fixes the issue. If it does, something is tripping that kill switch(an improperly adjusted safety switch, neutral safety switch, delay module,etc) Before you start, think about how you’re going to shut the mower off. There’s likely an inline fuel shutoff valve, turn that and wait for it to shut off, or pinch the fuel line with vice grips..umm or ground out the coils, disconnect fuel solenoid connector on carburetor. I hope you have a carburetor and not EFI. I realize this is true hillbilly diagnostics-but it will get you down 1 of the 2 paths.

Outstanding reply- I actually did some ohm test on the PTO clutch it came out to be 2.2 and surprisingly once plugged everything back in - I started the lawn mower up and tried the PTO switch again- nothing happened the engine didn’t slow or shutoff- so maybe it is the PTO switch itself? I will buy one and get back with you

I’m having issues off and on with the clutch not engaging, I have looked back and seen sparks coming out (from the clutch) when I try to engage and the blades do not engage.
