Nous ne savons rien des circonstances de sa composition, mais un effectif orchestral d’une ampleur inhabituelle (cordes, hautbois, bassons, cors, trompettes, timbales par deux, paire de flûtes) fait croire à quelque cérémonial très officiel de la cour du prince-archevêque de Salzbourg. Cette oeuvre doit son titre de Sérénade ‘’Cor de postillon’’ à l’emploi d’un ‘’cordon di posta’’ dans le deuxième trio du deuxième menuet, qui anticipe longtemps à l’avance certain solo de cor de postillon dans la Troisième Symphonie de Mahler, aux résonances certes plus romantique. C’est aussi l’ample structure en sept mouvements de l’oeuvre qui permet de croire à son exécution dans un cadre de dimensions vastes et solennelles. Dans cette sérénade, les mouvements concertants et le rondeau contiennent des solos importants pour la flûte et le hautbois mais tout au long de l’oeuvre, les instruments à vents sont traités avec énormément de subtilité, comme par exemple dans le thème secondaire principal du premier mouvement qui commence par les violons mais qui est complété par le hautbois au-dessus d’un choeur d’instruments à vent comme s’il se livrait à un commentaire sur l’action. What a wonderful remastering of this musical gem. I hope that you can also do a wonderful mastering of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto played by Leonid Kogan, Paris Conservatoire Orchestra, Constantin Silvestri as well as the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto played by Alfredo Campoli, LPO, Sir Adrian Boult. Shouldn't the two matches be reversed? Wonderful serenade, a precursor to the Prague symphony, and even Beethoven.
