Sorry David, but I do not have "plans" for the bottom boards. Like most of my wood working projects I do, I have a design, come up with measurements and then cut and assemble. As long as a hive body will fit on the bottom board, you are good to go. Know the size of the bottom board and then build one of your choosing, that's what I did. Good luck on all your projects.Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Congratulations on choosing to bee come a beekeeper, the world needs as many beekeepers as it can get. Building your own equipment is very rewarding and it can even save you some money building certain parts of a hive, however, when it comes to frames and boxes, it is better in the long run to buy them as the savings you may get from building them yourself are just not there. As far as measurements go, they are all built around the box itself which measures about 20 x 161/4. Good luck on all your endeavors. Thanks for watching. God's peace Cheryl. Mr. Ed

+Mike Bright Jr I actually finished today building the last 15 of the bottom boards. I wound up with 40 of them and the next thing to do is paint them which will happen next week. Right after Christmas I will be building my telescoping covers, a simple build, but I'll still make a video on that one also. Yesterday, I finished up my double screened dividing boards for the spring time splits, and I wound up with 35 of them. Thankfully, those don't have to get painted, I really don't like to paint. God's peace and Merry Christmas to you also.

Excellent craftsmanship as usual Jeff. As a new beekeeper I always have questions. I've wondered about screened bottom boards during the winter. You have many of your hives resting on what appears to be 4X6 timbers. Do you do anything to block wind from going under your hives during winter? It would seem to be a means for tremendous loss of heat, especially on cold, windy days. Like you, I am in Louisiana. Thank you.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 жыл бұрын
Because our winter are so mild here in Louisiana, having a screened bottom board makes no difference as far as the cold weather. However, what it does provide is ventilation, and this is very important in the winter as well as the summer. I run ALL screened bottom boards on our hives, and leave them open all winter long. God's peace Joe. Mr. Ed

Waiting to move to the new house and Barn/shop so I can get my Jet table saw set up and get to work on some bee equipment. I'll be hitting you up for some measurements in the future if you don't mind, thanks for your upload, and Merry Christmas, Capt'n

+wincharter1 All we have in the shop is cypress, plywood and wood. Any hardwood would be from the supplier when he sends us bundeled lumber,and those are just cul pieces used for strapping. I'd make a video of the shop, but it embaressses me to show how lucky I am to be working in such a modern shop. I've worked in plenty cabinet/mill shops in my day, and I've visited more, but this one is one of the best I've had the honor to work in. Not only is the equipment superb, but it's heated and cooled. How sweet is that! We just got our brand new Felder sliding/table saw, and I just finished using it for the first time cutting bee box parts. I'd be happy to give you my measurements, but everything depends on thickness, so I just use the dimensions of the hive body and adjust accordingly. Keep in touch. God's peace. Mr. Ed

The screened bottom allows air to circulate through the hive all the time, and because we live in the deep south it helps keep the bees cool. Because our winters are so mild here in Louisiana, I never bother closing them off. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

There are many reasons to consider screened bottom boards, but for me, living in the deep south, ventilation is the primary one. The screened board allows maximum air flow through the hive, and this helps during the summer as well as winter. God's peace Justin. Mr. Ed

I hate to tell you this, but I have changed my design to a much simpler method. I now use 2x4 material cut to length and width of a hive body, and simply run a rabbit joint on one edge 3/4 x 1/2 and screw the pieces together using 3" deck screws. I plug two of the holes, and leave the other 2 holes as entrances. Simple and sweet! I hope that helps. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I so enjoy you DIY bee furniture build videos. I used to build furniture as a hobby, and enjoy you designs and recycled materials. Do you have a design for a screened bottom board with a mite tray? I need space for a tray anyways, since where I live on the edge of the Great White North we need to insulate our bees from the wind. So I would slide insulation under the hive in the winter. I hear you have a bottom board product coming out soon, where can I find a link to buy one?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 жыл бұрын
The build videos, though a favorite of mine, are not as popular as the wrangling bee videos, so it's always nice to see there are folks out there that like them as well. I do not have a design for mite trays under the bottom board as knowing mite counts is not one of my priorities. Since I am treatment free, I let the bees handle the mites fro themselves. There is still no word on my latest screened bottom board design, as soon as I hear something, I will let everyone know. Keep those bees warm, winters acoming. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Kenneth, try to use a piece of Styrofoam insulation cut to fit, then cut the foam at 45 degrees in the front towards the entrance so the bees will be able to get out during the winter months. That is if you let them out. The 45 degrees will act as a ramp and styrofoam with be a great insulation during the winter. Just an idea.

There is no doubt about it, a fixture will always ensure a better finished product, and accuracy in reproducing the product.
